Ive never stepped foot into a bridal shop before, and of course i will be making visits soon.

I have no idea what kind of dress I want. Ive been looking online, but nothing has jumped out at me. Im not a very dressy kind of person, so i dont know what styles etc actually suit me. In Bridal shops, are the staff pretty good at picking out the best styles and finding something that suits your figure? I am assuming that they will know what they are on about, but i dont want to walk into a shop to be dressed by someone who is just going to sell me 'a' dress, and not 'the' dress (if that makes sense?).

Also, has anyone got any advice for me? Is there anything i should do/wear/ask when i finally step foot into the unknown!?

I was the same as you didn't have a clue, I went to two shops the first lady as soon as I took my jacket of said 'go pick what you like but i've got a dress in mind for you' like you I had looked online and one stood out for me BUT I hated it when I tried it on. the dress she choose for me was stunning but also the furthest from my imagination that I would get.

My advice is go with an open mind try on all the styles the woman should know what is going to look good on you.
I don't think they will just sell you a dress but trust me you will know when its the one for you.
Also I would suggest wearing a strapless bra

I got the first dress I tried on in the second shop but it was very similar to the one the lady in the first shop picked for me. Happy shopping and enjoy the experience xx

Thats one thing i dont have and didnt think of, a strapless bra! I must buy one, thank you.

Ive got so many ideas of dresses going through my mind, but i suppose i wont know what i will like until i try it on. Is it real that you know 'the one' when you try it on?

Generally the bridal shop staff are pretty good at making suggestions. When I've been they've generally told me to wander round and pick out a few that I like the look of, but I'm sure if you ask them to recommend some instead they'll be more than happy to. Could you get a bridesmaid or your mum to go with you to help you? It's worth asking about sample sales, as they might have things in lines that are going to be discontinued which will be cheaper. You also need to make sure that you're happy with the bra and knickers that you're wearing, as the lady helping you will probably see them when they help you into dresses.

30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.

My advice would be to go in with an open mind and try on as many styles as possible as some of the dresses look completely different on then they do on the hanger!

Also, have fun! This is such an exciting time for you so really make the most of it :) xxx

I recently went for 1st dress shop day and to be honest I just wanted to go in open minded yet with some ideas lol
The 1st shop I went in a girl asked what I wanted or didn't like , styles budget etc and then let me look around with my mates and brought a few dresses to me which I tried on .
It was fun but my dress hunt is still on :)

I got mine online from debenhams.

Some bridal shops will only let you have 2 people with you so find out before inviting too many.
Go with an open mind, and try as many styles as you can. You'll soon learn what you like/don't like.
Sometimes how it looks on the hanger is nothing compared to how it looks on you.

I tried fishtail, strapless, one shoulder, aline, big puffy, ball gown, plain, lace, embellished, asymmetrical.

I ended up with a combination slim aline, semi fishtail, embellished lace with an asymmetrical satin wrap and bow.

That dress is beautiful! I would love something like that, but i dont have the kind of figure that can get away with that... unless i wore the most unflattering suck in pants to hide the flab haha.

Well, i will be going shopping on the 20th September if my bridesmaids are free. They want to sort the appointments for me too! I think they are planning a day of it, dress shops and lunch :)

Are you allowed to take photos if you are just trying on dresses? I remember being at a wedding fayre a while ago and they wouldnt let us take photos (im guessing its so you cant go elsewhere to buy it).

Depends on the shop really, some let you take as many photos as you like others will not allow you to take any until you've actually paid the deposit. The ones that don't let you blame the designers, but it does seem to depend on who yet get at times. I was the only one in one shop and they said they're not suppose to let people take photos but they let me. Take your camera with you and ask - no harm in asking.

The shop I bought mine in wouldn't let me take photos, which is why I put the "model" picture, but the other shop I went in encouraged it. Strange how some will and some won't. Even after I bought the dress!

It completely depends on the shop, it might be worth checking out reviews if they have a Facebook page. If you're not sure what you're after, an outlet shop might be worth checking out, I know that the wedding dress factory outlet lets you take photographs of their dresses.
