    Hi everyone

I'm new to this whole wedding planning lark and have just started looking at venues. We are ideally looking to get married September 2013 but haven't set an exact date yet, depends on the right venue and availability.

What I'd like to know is... have any of you 'haggled' with your venues at all? Discounts on brochure price for venue hire/food etc. Or maybe got some extras thrown in free?

Some of the brochure prices for venues I like are a bit off-putting but I'm not sure what the etiquette is for negotiating!

    Thanks in advance :)

    Kx

I havent negotiated as yet but do plan to and there is lots of ladies on here that have on lots of things and got lots of discount or freebies so if definatley worth a try.

With regards to the brouchure price, there maybe some movement but not always a lots so my view when i am looking at moment is it they are WAY over budget then Im not looking but if it just a little over budgett ehn I will look and see if can barter with them etc they can only say no!!! zxx

We tried to negotiate but got a big fat no (in fairness the deal that we got was a good one anyway but thought we may aswell ask) I don't see any harm in asking - don't ask, don't get :-) x

Hmmm, it depends I spose if they do wedding packages and have weddings all the time then you can't really negotiate as they probably know they will find someone else! Unless its a late booking! But the smaller venues that may not do many weddings or don't usually do weddings maybe more open to negotiation x :-) x

You could still ask for freebies; complimentary bridal room, discount on rooms for your guests things like that if it's not already included x

The worst you can expect is a no, I think it is always worth asking. You might get more leverage if you are willing to change the date & day of the week.

We got a really good package deal so didn't negotiate, but we have got some extras thrown in free - place cards, table plan, menus etc.
Also, try speaking to more than one wedding co-ordinator because we were given different quotes! Lol. We got quoted £100 a night for B&B in the bridal suite, asked somebody else & got it for £60 - bargain! So that could be worth doing. xx

I tried to negotiate with mine (my job involves a lot of negotiation so I thought I was pretty good) but they basically laughed at me! I think maybe if you are getting married mid week or out of the typical wedding season there could be some room for movement but since I'm getting married in July I didn't have a hope!!x

i have had alot of dealings with my venue first of all they said yes to me having a range of choices for my wedding breakfast then they changed their minds and said only 1 choice for each starter, main and dessert so i told them that wasnt good enough and i was disappointed so would be looking for another venue they came back and agreed what i wanted... I have also asked them if i booked in 2011 would they keep 2011 prices instead of the 5% increase each year and they said yes so we have saved a 10% increase you can always try and they can say no but at least you have tried xx

I negotiated with our venue twice.... Basically we met them and my dad came too (who is paying for the reception) and he offered to pay early if we get a discount, guy said he would think about it and let me know. Dad then said if we get a good deal he would pay half now and the rest a month before the wedding so the venue has money early. Venue came back and offered 5% off the drinks which wasn't a lot of money so I said no. Would rather 10% off the total bill and would transfer half over within 24 hours, they agreed and dad transferred the money.the worse they could say was no. So my advice is definitely negotitiate and if you can pay a higher deposit then good negotitiating tool. Just remember we are in a recession and they want your money too xxx

Thanks for all your replies everyone, I hope to book some viewings this week so will probably try for discount first and then freebies second if that fails! The trouble I'm having at the moment is finding the right venue at all... we live in Worcestershire and my fiance is from South Wales so have been trying to find somewhere in the middle but everywhere seems a bit naff or completely out of our budget....aaarggghhh! xxx

Go with where you like rather than what is easier for everyone as people will travel. We live in Birmingham but my family from Somerset and we couldnt decide on venues as ultimately someone would have to travel so looking in the middle and then decided No we were going with what we actually wanted which was Somerset. So sadly all H2B's family and our friends have to travel down but they are looking at it as a weekend away and mini holiday xxx

I agree with millz. Regardless of where you pick, it sounds like people would have to travel, so I wouldn't be too worried. We recently went to a wedding down in Weymouth (we live in York) and although it was quite a trek, we were more than happy do so to be a part of the couples special day. Most people are happy to travel Hun, so you just go with where you like xx

with our venue they are also paying £20 toward the flower arrangement for the ceremony table, free red carpet on the floor for during the ceremony, free master of ceremonies, free cake knife to use and a free complementary standard room for the night of the wedding (we can upgrade to the bridal suite if we want) so we are using the free room the night before for 2 of my bridemaids to stop in then i am having the brial suite the night before and the night of the wedding always worth asking what they will throw in for free xx

We got £2000 off ours in the end but that was cutting a few bits out but not a lot! Little things like canapes and only having one option for each course (that saved £10pp which was £700 for us). We're also having sausage and bacon rolls instead of a normal buffet which saved £11pp so another £770 x x

I'm going to haggle like my life depends on it! But I have the advantage of I know the venue as I used to work there, I also know the cost price of everything even the cost of staff. My starting package is £10,000 I. Going in to meet them next week, they know what I'm like so I'm guessing their bracing themselves!

Just ask, look at the packages on offer and see if you want to cut anything that's not needed. I'm cutting canapés and bottled water as I just don't see the point of them my lot would be insulted with water!!! I'm also going to set up the room myself as I want everything exact and I also want a discount for this! Lol if I have any trouble I'm going to call in the forces and send my mother down!!

The money up front is always a good one as at the end of the day that is exactly what the venue wants from you MONEY!

I am in the same boat! Fallen in love with two venues that are both over our budget and i'm just praying i can haggle them down with a promise of a large deposit there and then! How much has everyone been quoted for the venue plus food etc? We are wanting to do the whole lot at a manor house and the cheapest weve been quoted is £10,500 to include venue, wedding breakfast, evening buffet and DJ. Trying to bring the costs down as thats around our budget for the whole thing as we are funding it ourselves! Soooo hard!!

We looked around a lot of manor houses and hotels etc for somewhere to have our venue and ceremony and werent all that impressed really with the packages they had on offer. We wanted something original that we could put our stamp on, not someone elses idea of a wedding if you get me. We found a large function space with private bar, ceremony licence and was really good value even though they had packages we chose not to go for one, as wanted a hog roast. Originally price for venue hire and outside catering for a hog roast and buffet was about £2500, met with venue on monday and discussed this although said we had been quoted £1700 for the lot. They then said they would see if they could arrange something, e-mail today saying they would do the whole venue, hog roast, MOC and large buffet for £1650!!!! HAGGLE!!

Always haggle! There's no harm in asking.

I think best things to haggle on are 'fixed' cost items such as room hire etc.

Also, give them reasons why they should give your a discount.....are you having your wedding off peak, on a weekday, out of season....is it a particularly large wedding party etc, do you have lots of guests who will want overnight accommodation?

Our venue offer a twenty percent discount if you book out eight or more rooms....plus a twenty percent discount on the rooms.

Don't be afraid to ask for freebies...after all, you are paying them an awful lot of money for one days work!

    Xx

Well we've found a venue and booked the date! So far, have successfully haggled a free private breakfast room for our guests for the morning after the wedding, got them to do cones of fish and chips for our evening food at half the price of their normal evening buffet and a further 10% off the whole package price for having a Friday wedding... I'm enjoying this now!! :o)

Hi, newbie B2B here, I live in south Wales and only have a total wedding budget of 2.5k which, from what I've read is absolutely nothing. I started looking online for venues in Wales and was horrified that most of them seem to want every penny I have and more so I am definitely going to have to negotiate! I already plan on getting my dress online from overseas, my rings cheaply through work (i work for a scrap metal buyer so have dibbs on nice jewellery that comes in at cost price) and making all the decorations and cake myself. I'm even easy about the date- we would get married in January if It's cheaper. I've now found a hotel nearby that looks lovely and has had good reviews, that does a package for £1000. I'm worried there must be a catch and am a little nervous about sounding like an idiot on the phone if I ask, I'm so new to all this! The package includes a free room for the ceremony, breakfast for a small party (we don't plan on having many guests anyway), eve buffet for a good size party, and free bridal suite. Does this sound like a good deal? Is there something obvious I'm forgetting, and would it be wise for me to just ask them? I don't want them to see me as easy prey and rip me off... sorry for the wall of text!

    Nic

I would say extras are easier to negotiate than discounts – like bridal suite etc. Large weddings which are going for a menu more than the minimum spend will also get a better discount. If you go for a weekday out of peak season there will be a lot more room for negotiation than a Saturday in August for example! We booked for a Friday in May, which is £2000 cheaper venue hire than the Saturday of the following weekend in June!

Nicola, are you getting married there too or just having your reception? ask about drinks packages, chair covers, any decorations, is it exclusive, is that price for any day of the week. I found they did a good deal and then added on extras and the budget was gone. I'm doing my wedding for about 3k but we are having a village hall with a marquee liner. we've cut our costs by not having a seperate evening do.x

Georgie, I think we would get married at the venue. I'm not religious so a church is out of the question, although something inside me still says that our registry office isn't that bad either. I'm just concerned that I then have to arrange costly travel from there to the reception venue. I was also thinking of decorating ourselves with the help of eBay bought stuff.

Hi Nic - wow that is a tight budget but anything is possible :)

That deal sounds great! I expect the only catch is that the dates would be very limited - but as you said this isn't a problem then I assume this wouldn't bother you. I expect they will try to upsell as well to push up your spending with them so stand your ground :)

They will also make money on the bar for your guests and any hotel rooms they book so they will be making their profit there.

I think yYou will also need to pay for the registrar to come to the venue if you want to get married there – I expect this isn’t included and is about £300 I think (someone may correct me here –7 years ago I worked as a wedding co-ordinator at a hotel but my memory is a bit hazy!)

Give them a bell – you won’t look silly! I didn’t know what a wedding breakfast was and asked why people would have breakfast AFTER the wedding service on my first day at the hotel! Oops!

Hi I negotiated big time and got my venue for £200 for an evening. This was easy for me as I only need it for the evening anyway therefore I only want a buffet which brings the total venue price to £900. It's two ballrooms of the house of a former Lord. Beautiful building overlooking a lake.
I wholly recommend bargaining to anyone. I think venues are mostly overpriced anyway.

Some venues will budge on price it does depend solely on the day of the week and the time of year. I got mine so cheap and with no trimmings because I know the owner, although I did go through two months of looking at other venues before this and as my wedding had to be in summer as we've guests coming from England and I felt it best to do it during what might be their normal months for holidays.
I found the whole experience gut wrenchingly hard and that's no joke and I honestly thought we were destined to have our reception in a crappy old working mans club or something at that rate. But I called the owner of my venue as a last resort and talked for a while and got the ballrooms for the evening. I think what really breaks the bank is the sit down meal so brides who are on an extremely tight budget could benefit from only having the bridal party and immediate family only at the ceremony, and go for dinner somewhere then have an evening reception with a buffet for the rest of the guests. I get married in England and am having a very small ceremony here then a week later I have a big party in Ireland. I have a good excuse to get rid of the meal :-)

When I was originally enquiring into venues for my reception in Ireland I was being quoted £5000 and most of those didnt even include a DJ lol so I think I'd rather pay £200 and hire two Bar staff and a DJ.
