Came across a debate about natural diamond vs lab created ones.
What are your views on them?
    Which would you prefer?

REAL! That's the value of them - from being naturally found and finding as they say a real gem! Other than that it is just a bit of carbon so a lab one may look nice but I like the thought that a good diamond is hard to come by (against all the crazy controlling in Africa etc etc) and to cut it is even harder as it's a real art!

I have a lab diamond ring and even a professional jeweller couldn't tell the difference by just looking at it. they sparkle just like real diamonds

I say real, I reckon they would last much longer than lab created ones. That and it is nice to have something precious on your hand to remind you of the people who are precious in your life xx

Real but I don't how you'd tell if you were getting a real one of a lab created one.

    Found this on a website

"Lab-created diamonds are unique in that they are real diamonds, with identical physical, chemical and optical characteristics to natural diamonds. Simulants – cubic zirconia, moissanite and the like – are not real diamonds as they have completely different properties when compared to mined diamonds.

Real diamonds are either mined or lab-created. Lab-created diamonds – made by a crystal growth process, atom by atom, the same as in nature – possess the same exceptional cut, color and clarity as the highest-quality mined diamonds. Simulants are made artificially, by chemical synthesis – the formation of compounds through one or more chemical reactions – and are therefore not real diamonds."

I say go for lab created, unless you can be sure of where your diamonds are coming from. Latest figures show that 1 in 4 diamonds are so called 'blood diamonds'.

Diamond mining is a horrible business and I personally wouldn't want to put money into that industry...the whole safeguard system is voluntary, so it's near impossible to know of your diamonds are conflict-free or not. Xx

I wouldn't call it crazy controlling, I'd say its protection of human rights! I'd much rather know that the lovely, pretty thing I admire on my hand every day didn't cost anyone their life, and the person that acquired it was paid a fair, decent wage for it. As it says above, lab diamonds are as unique an beautiful as natural diamonds. Also, with my H2B's background in chemistry, a lad one is all the more fitting :)

its still a diamond, its just a sped up process. its not like the diamond ring you end up with from wherever it was dug up looks like that when you get it, its cut and polished and whatnot. its not like its a fake. it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. im having my kittens ashes made into a diamond eventually.

ive no idea where the diamonds in my ring came from and I cant say im fussed either

unless I find out they are fake. and then he is in trouble lol

As long as they aren't conflict or 'blood' diamonds then I am not fussed where they come from, as long as it is real and that it looks good.

Although my H2B is a geologist, and sure he'd prefer my diamond to be dug up rather than 'grown' in a lab :-)

Hello everyone, I'm new here and hope you don't mind me commenting :)

I have a moissanite, which I know is lab-created, but is absolutely beautiful and has such amazing sparkle. I chose it myself and was completely adamant that I did not want diamond because of not knowing where they come from. Diamonds are undoubtedly beautiful though :) x

I prefer real diamonds, in much the same way I'd always prefer a natural pearl to a cultured pearl, even though to all intents and purposes, they're the same.

I acknowledge that that's probably ridiculous though, and, dare I say it, a touch snobby. It's also probably partly due to a degree of brainwashing by the diamond industry who obv want you to purchase more expensive natural diamonds..

I love vintage diamonds, as I really like a lot of the older cuts. They also tend to be cheaper which is nice. It frustrates me that essentially the only thing keeping diamond prices high is a cartel that limits the supply.

I have lab created diamond jewellery. The diamonds created are absolutely stunning and no one can tell them apart from a mined diamond. I would certainly recommend them. Huge positive - if the worse were ever to happen and you list your stone then so much easier to get an exact replacement! I love mine. Most of these places let you try before you commit anyway so give one a go. One thing I'm not so keen on is the quality of the gold (only plating though) but it is easy enough to get a band you like made to fit your diamond.
