I thought I had found THE perfect cake.. very fancy affair with lots of tiers, cupcakes and a bird cage on the top with lots and lots of detail. Now quite in contrast, I am now finding myself loving the 'naked' wedding cakes, with maybe a garland of pastel coloured flowers weaved around it.
I am going to find a few pictures of designs I like and start speaking to cake makers re. prices, but I just wanted to come on here and get a bit of advice first. Do you think a naked cake should be a lot cheaper than a more traditional wedding cake due to having no icing and no intricate detailing? I mean it literally would just be sponge and a bit of cream between the layers.. ? I was quote £440 by one cake maker for the fancy affair - to serve 80 people.
I have uploaded a photo of the kind of thing I am thinking about in my albums x

It should absolutely be cheaper due to it taking far, far less time without icing and intricately iced details.
It may also be worth approaching somebody who makes cakes, but doesn't specialise in wedding cakes? That will probably bring the price down even more!
CommentAuthorGlitterfairy
I'd imagine it should be cheaper as not going into so much detail with icing etc. I like the look of them, especially when done nicely.

If I was having a rustic wedding I would definitely want a naked cake. But we are having a modern approach to the day so the properly iced stack suits us better :)

Tbh I think wedding cakes are all overpriced. You have any friends that can bake that could do it for you?
CommentAuthorFlossie
I agree Tasha, completely stupid prices for a cake! I don't have any friends directly but I know my aunties friend bakes cake and she made a really lovely one for my birthday. I'm not sure what her capabilities are but thinking of asking my auntie for her details so I can run it by her :) would definitely be better off using a general cake maker rather than someone who specialises in weddings.. Can hopefully shake the big price tag that way x

I love the naked wedding cakes! Personally I would say that they should be cheaper than ordinary wedding cakes as there will be no fancy shapes or icing or any time needed to decorate it in any way as you would be able to do that yourself to fit how you want it. I have however seen some gorgeous naked wedding cakes where it gradually changes from the base to the top which looks really pretty! For that type I would expect to be just ever so slightly more than an ordinary naked wedding cake as it will take an amount of food colouring I would imagine. If I were to give you any advice it would be to ask how much it would cost for a plain iced wedding cake to serve your 80 guests and then how much it would cost for a naked wedding cake to serve your 80 guests. I would expect it to be at least £100 cheaper but then again I'm not a cake expert. I definitely wouldn't pay if it was any less than this. xx

I wanted a naked cake but hubby hated them, so had an iced one in the end with mini hedgehogs on the top and had tree markings scored into the icing x

Flossie i got a quote for the cake i originally want and the lady quoted £100 i thought perfect she then asked what it was for. after me telling her a wedding she said 'oh sorry it will be more expensive then' it went up to £250 i started ranting i couldnt believe how it had gone up and she said thats what we do for weddings.
i was truely discusted. i cant get my head round how people charge £100 for a 3 tier christening cake and £200+ for wedding cakes.
I love the naked look i am having a rough iced butter cream cake as i love the simpleness of it
CommentAuthorsALLY
kelbel do you have a pic of your cake??
also try local bakeries ive gone with some one who has just set up baking and her cupcakes are amazing. im paying £60 for a two tier cake and 40 cupcakes.
CommentAuthorFlossie
Wow Appy, how can she justify adding on an extra £150 for exactly the same cake, just because it is for a wedding?! It is really bad.. no cake should ever be worth that amount of money lol. The deal you've got sounds fab. I will definitely check out the cheaper options as opposed to going to wedding cake makers. Thanks for all your advice ladies x

A local cake maker popped up on my newsfeed on FB and I asked her how much a 3 tier naked wedding cake would be to serve about 80 people.. She said £160 which I think is a really good price, although would love to do it even cheaper. I didn't stipulate that it was a wedding cake either. Definitely a more appealing quote than the £440 we had for the very detailed, intricate cake x

Flossie, I love the idea of the naked cake... I've thought about or the whole naked cake, or cupcake tower with an one tier naked cake on the top :)
Really glad to hear that the naked cake is really cheaper :)
CommentAuthorFlossie
I love the idea too Camila, it would fit perfectly with our vintage/rustic/country garden theme as well. I like the 'less is more' look x

considering that the icing and the decoration is what takes up the majority of the pricing for cakes... i would say that it is completely unfair and simply consumerism... unacceptable...
CommentAuthorMrsEmmaP
I love the idea of a naked cake, seen a few recently and thought they looked fab! If I were going for the same theme as you I would definitely have one! I wouldn't pay anymore than £200 for it. Would you not consider making it yourself? :) x

No I would rather pay a professional (or someone who bakes cakes a lot)!! I know it's probably not even that hard, but they know how to assemble it etc. It would need to be made the day before the wedding so that it keeps its freshness and doesn't go dry and would probably also need to be transported to the venue in separate tiers and assembled there, again, for freshness. I don't think I would want that added stress!! xx

Yeah good point haha! That is one thing you can't stress over but it will be stressful! Try M&S as they do wedding cakes and the ones I've seen are pretty cheap! I think you could probably get a naked one x

I like the whole naked cake idea but it's not very 'us' or match our theme, otherwise we'd probably have one. I like baking but I don't think I'd be confident making one either lol x

I looked on M&S a short while back and they didn't have naked ones. They are fab prices though for iced cakes and they have some lovely ones!
I'm probably going to ask for the contact details of my auntie's friend as she bakes cakes as a hobby.. she made a surprise birthday cake for me once and it was amazing :) I'm sure she would probably be even cheaper than £160 as she doesn't do it as a business x

I've seen a naked wedding cake. One of the cake makers I spoke to while trying to sort out our cake dilemma did one for a wedding last weekend. It was 6 tiers (I think) with loads of fruit and cream. It looked really cool but it's not really my thing.
I found our cake maker on a local community page on book of face, after a small issue because the original lady is having an op in March and won't be available to do our cake for our wedding in April. She's charging us £100 a tier (we're only having 3), but the decoration is free. She's also doing shortbread biscuits for our favours and charging £1 per biscuit. Might be worth a try if you have a community page for your area on book of face?

£100 a tier still sounds quite expensive to me... I'm hoping to get the whole three-tier cake done for no more than £150. Obviously there won't be icing or intricate detailing though which brings the price down. I've not been going direct to wedding cake specialists, I have been seeking out local cake makers who do it more as a hobby so to speak, rather than as a business :-)

That seems expensive to me we have been quoted £250 for a three tier royal iced cake with lace design on. That's with the three tiers been different cakes too. Having a large sponge a carrot cake and then a small fruit cake. Have a few picture ideas in my album. I think the price you are looking towards is reasonable with it not having icing or anything

The lady who made the naked cake has just come back to me. The one she made serves 100 people (which will be more than enough for us) and is £170 not including delivery and set up (she didn't say how much this was - will find out though). I think that's really reasonable considering it includes the floral decoration and the base as well. Will definitely consider her!

That's a really good deal, I'm sure even with the set up and delivery it would be less than £200, which for a wedding cake is very cheap! The price usually shoots up when cakes have that much flower detailing :) x

I was thinking last night how our cake is the only thing we haven't decided on completely yet! A colleague is making ours for us so we don't need to worry, it's just because we like one tier from one picture, and another from a different one and so on lol! I think because there isn't a picture of what's in my head I can't imagine or know how to explain it :/ wish I could draw! X

Hopefully! I searched her post code and she is about 45 mins from my venue so not too bad. I guess most of the charge will be to cover fuel. But as it's a naked cake and needs to be set up in a certain way I'd much rather pay someone who knows what they're doing to do that! xx
