I used to bite my nails, for years, but stopped a few years ago. My nails aren't the strongest but I've been growing them well for months. All of a sudden they are in a TERRIBLE state! All breaking off, some even right down. I've been filing them and they will be longer on my wedding day. I'm just wondering what my options are. I wanted nice nails, maybe French manicured but they won't be long as I'd like them! I've heard about gel or acrylic extensions, but how does this work? What length do my nails have to be? Gutted my nails are in such bad nick!

You can have gel tips put on whatever length your nails are hun, and then they cut them down to the length that you want them to be. I would advise having gel over acryllic, as with gel they will use white gel for the tips and neutral for the rest of the nail, but with acrylics they put it all on in a neutral colour and then spray paint the white on, so it can chip and come off, which the gel ones dont xxx

Well they normally only take about an hour to do. Obviously the closer to the wedding the better they will look as your nails will still grow with them, so personally I would say within 3 days of your wedding day would probably be best xxx

Yeh I would say have them done a day or 2 before the wedding so you can get used to holding things with them if you haven't had them before xxx

I was the same, I kept trying to grow my nails, i bought some nail polish which helped them grow and harder and it really helped! However I had some gel nail polish put on 2 months before the wedding and wrecked them all and i broke every single one. I ended up having nail extensions which I believe can go on any size nail and you can decide on how long you want them. I had mine done the morning of the wedding xx

You can get acrylic ones with white tips. Some nail technicians spray the white on, which I personally don't like. Bt many technicians have a few shades of white that they shape the acrylic to the natural shape of your white, and then use the pink and file down. I have always bitten my nails, and whilst I didn't bite them far down I found gel nails always peel off of my nails and do not last. Acrylic lasts 2/3 weeks and then as your nail grows they grow too so you would then want them in filled or soaked off.

I have been advised gel, such as shellac, and other types are used on strong brittle nails.
Acrylic is typically used for weak nails

    Hope this might help

you can have nail extensions however short your nails are. mine are really short as i bite them too so i have gels normally. only problem with gels are if your on certain medication they can just break off as easy as a normal nail. as i was so much medication they did this so for the time being iv had to go back to acrylics.

acrylics are cheaper granted and i don't know if its the same for all nail technicians but with mine she uses calgel (sorry if i cant say this) so with acrylics you can take the polish off at home and paint them yourself whereas with gels the polish or nail art is set so you cant take it off. but granted gels are so much better for you nails.

after a certain time though your nails will grow under the extensions so in time you could have the gel or acrylic over your own nail. that way you wont bite your nails as you'll have the strength there but can say that it's your own nail.

also not being racist or anything but i wouldn't go to the Chinese in the salons. they use a drill to file the tip to your nail which takes loads of layers off your own nail and isn't good for you nails at all. if you can find a nail technician that works from home or will come to you. they are the best as they use a normal file that wont harm you.

the other option if you can get them are fiberglass. apparently they are even better then gels but i don't know anyone by me that does them so i don't know if its true or not.

until i started my job i had my nails done all the time, unfourtunatly though due to my job i cant have them done so when i go back to work i will have to have them off which kills me (i swear you can get addicted lol) so it will be back to only having them on holidays :(. they also last about 2-3 weeks depending on how fast your nails grow and need infills. mine only last that long cause of the years i had the Chinese do them (that's how bad the drill is, it can effect how much they grow) and because of my chemo for my cancer when i was a teenager , but my friend can go 4 weeks till the needs an infill.

    Hope this helps x

I much prefer acrylic as they are stronger (gel tends to pop up if you knock them) you can what ever colour acrylic you want and are able to change the colour your self too. You can always go to a nail technician and ask for their opinion what would best but I think most of them would say it's up to you xx

You can always paint your acrylic nails with any nail varnish. Just ensure you don't use a nail varnish remover with acetone in it if you have acrylic as it will start to dissolve the acrylic thus ruining the look and feel of the nail.

If u decide ur gonna have tips put on they will cut your own nails right down to in line with your finger so you need to decide what you're doing now, if ur gonna get tips, no point in growing them, if u get what I mean... They look beautiful when done tho... Only prob I had when I had mine done is that they came off after two weeks cos I do too much cleaning and cooking lol x

I'm having nail extensions, I'm terrible with my nails they'll grow perfectly for a while and then slowly one by one they will weaken and start breaking, so I'm not going to risk it when the time comes. Think I'll get mine done the day before the wedding possibly the only thing is, is I will want to mess with them because it will be strange not being my actual nails lol.

I have acrylic tips on now, I always get them done & my tips are glitter ones, so you don't just have to have plain white ones if you don't want to, you can have any colour/pattern you want. With the white acrylic ones, you can get tips that are already white (which I get when I have white ones) & they don't chip or anything xx
