I have never had long beautiful nails. They are not hideous just weak and prone to peeling and breaking and then before i know it i am nibbling at them lol! Anyway i would like lovely medium length nails for/by my wedding and wondered what my best options were.

I have had acrylics before and as a last resort i would get them done but keep them quite short but i really didn't like them.I loved how they looked but i couldn't do anything because whenever i touched anything with them it felt horrid,i can't really explain but i felt like i'd lost the sensation of touch!i managed to keep them on for about 3 weeks but when they were taken off my real nails were shocking so i would not be keen to do that again.

What i suppose i want is something that will make it possible to grow my natural nails and strengthen them at the same time,or something that will at least be kind to my nails and make them feel as though they are still a part of me lol!

Any suggestions would be welcome as the world of nail salons is a bit alien to me and i don't want to look stupid or come out with something completely the opposite to what i want. xxx

I have had acrylics now for 3 years I dont know what my real nails look like anymore I just keep having infills every 2 - 3 weeks and mine are quite long I have got used to doing everything with them now and wouldnt be without them but some friends of mine cannot cope with acrylics as cant do anything with them once they have them on so they have that UV gel on their nails from what I can gather its brushed on like nail varnish and comes in all colours and then you soak it off? You can buy it from the bay of e xx

get them shlacked.. or how ever you spell it .. and if ya keep getting it done your own nails may just naturally grow..cause the shlack will give them a bit of etra strengh and a failse coating.. go to a salon that provides this and ake , trust me they wont look at you stupid , just explain what you are after and ask about the long term results of it.. hoped this has helped you a bit x

You can buy Sally Hansan stuff in boots that's meant to strengthen nails and help them grow- not sure how good it is. I have really short nails too and I'm not sure what to do with them for the day. Will probably keep them short-ish and have a Shellac gel manicure in french polish- had one before, lasts about 2-3 weeks but won't make nails any longer! x

Have gel honey... they do a few different types, Shellack is one or Gel-ish. I have Gel-ish done on my toes in the summer and love it. The colours are really bright, it lasts about 3 weeks before chipping and doesnt ruin your nails underneath. The only thing is Gel wont extend the length of your nails, just goes on top.

I have had acylics for years now and love them but if you arent used to them then they can be annoying. Acyrlics will stop your nails breathing underneath so make them slightly weaker but should never ruin them if you have them hand filed rather than drilled.

It's not the acrylics that weaken the nails, but the filling that is done to them. Never resort to a 'cheap' salon, if they use a drill then turn and walk away. Most people have really good success with Shellac as it supports the nails that growing underneath an makes it less likely to bend and snap.

It's important to remember that the white bit of nails you see is dead nail, and cannot be treated or repaired. All work to strengthen the nail needs to be done at the cuticle. It takes an average of 3-6 months for a nail to grow from cuticle to tip, so if you want good nails in time for your wedding you should be using a cuticle oil every day starting now.

Thank you ladies.Sounds like this Gel might be worth a try.Do you think if i wore it from now until the wedding it would give my nails the strength to grow a bit?.I don't want them really long just a few mm past the end of my fingers so that i can get a nice manicure and french polish?
OWB is there a paticular kind of oil i should be looking for for my cuticles,i have some Burts Bees stuff that i seem to recall was for your cuticles somewhere that i got for Christmas a couple of years ago i will have to root it out? xxx

Yes if you have Gel on now it wont make your nails grow any quicker but will protect them from breaking between now and the wedding as have a hard protective layre on top of them.... i would suggest finding a good nail technician and talking to her and she would be able to advise on curticle oil too. Dont go to a nail technician/salon because they are cheap as wont be good for your nails. I use a mobile lady and she is fabulous, about £25 for a set of Gelish on my tops which you can get done cheaper elsewhere but she is honest and does a good job xxx

Ive had shellac on mine for a coupl of months now and my nails have really grown, it lasts about 2 weeks then thy soak it off and and reapply, ive had colours now ive got a french manicure, my nails are like yours they are very brittle but the shellac makes them quite tough, i would definately recommend it x

To be honest you don't need to use an expensive oil, even olive oil would work. It's just to lubricate the nail as it grows through the cuticle. The Burts Bees one will be fine if you have it.

File your nails just a little bit each day, people seem to find this strengthens them and keeps them from chipping.
Take vitamin B, it's supposed to help with hair and nail growth xx

I dont have ultra long nails, they are just over the tops of my fingers which I like....any longer and i bite them.....
and I have tried coloured nails and i really dont like them, I just want them to look natural....as much as they can.
I might have a little gem put on my ring finger.....I am into neutrals so the AM is perfect for me.

    I want something like this:

Thats the length i want them Raggedy Anne,i can manage it with my thumbs but all my other nails i struggle with-in 42 years i have never had long nails!.If i have coloured nails i chip them within minutes and then they look awful.I much prefer the natural look plus if they chip you cannot tell as much although this gel stuff is supposed not to chip is it not!
I am going to find somewhere that does it this week and give it a go.
