I ordered a dress in January and my measurements were taken. It arrived late June and when I went back, I had lost half a stone. Putting the dress on it was loose which I put down to my weight loss then the owner told me I had another brides dress and she swooped it. The new dress only just did up and was very snug which I questioned as had I stayed the weight I was at the start of the year it would not fit. No explanation could be given.
I go to my first fitting last week and despite being the same weight, the dress now is 2 inches small and cannot be altered.
They said they would let me have the next size up off the rack, but it's marked at the bottom and needs more alterations, more money.
They said I should be grateful they had one for me and offered me a veil but we have spent £1500 to have a dirty off the rack dress.
    What do you all think?

Sounds a bit suspicious to me. If they took your measurements and assured you that the next size down would fit, I think the problem lies with them.

Can you get your money back at all? I wouldn't accept a dress that has been tried on by other brides to be and I dont think you would ever be fully happy with it either knowing that.

I'm not sure when you're getting married and how long you've got, but I would insist the shop sorts this and I certainly wouldn't be paying to have any alterations done.

Hi Katherine when are you getting married??

Id be furious and wouldnt accept it. They took your measurements and said the dress would fit, if you havent changed any sizes then they must have done something wrong, it all sounds very suspicious. I wouldnt accept the one of the rack and i would demand another dress as ordered (obviously this depends on timeframes) xx

I agree it sounds a bit suspicious. My first thoughts are that they saw you'd lost weight, the other bride with the same dress couldn't fit into hers, so they switched them... maybe I'm just being too cynical.

However I would definitely not be paying full price for a dress that has come off the rack and has been tried on by many other brides and is dirty.. on top that, if you keep the off the rack dress, I would also not pay for alterations if done in-house by the bridal store as it was their mistake and they should be happy to at least honour the alterations for free.

If you have enough time, I would be demanding a completely new order or a full refund and place the order through a different bridal shop as you've already experienced poor customer service with this one!

Hope you get it sorted xx

Thanks girls - I get married in 5 weeks time so I cannot order in a new dress.

I really feel let down and to be honest I don't want the dress now, the whole thing has put me off it.

The owner has said legally there is no obligation for her to do anything and had a baby yesterday so communication is not possible for a short space of time. With the alterations it will have cost around £1400 for an off the rack dirty dress!

Yes I woukd def question them and say that they took the measurements, you haven't out on weight, but lost some so if they did he measurements correct then the dress should be big, which the first one was before they said it was the wro one!

I woukd insist to them they sort it or give you a full refund- I know you don't need the dress but I'm sure there are shops that woukd help you in your situation- sounds that that shop are a liability- really hope you manage to sort it! Xx

thats so aweful im sorry for you!! 5 weeks doesnt give you much time. but you could try and demand for a refund and go else where and get another dress of the rack, then you have time to alter it. Some rack dresses are in mint condition! xx

Have you threatened them with Trading Standards?
It might be worth a try.

Ask to have a look at your original order - it should show your measurements and then you can compare.

I really hope you manage to get your dress sorted.

Looking forward to becoming the 3rd and last Mrs McLauchlan

I would make sure they sort it because no matter what happened I really think it lies with the shop. Either I would make them get a dress that fits or I would pay the same price for the off the rack dress but they would have to foot the bill for alterations and cleaning plus they should throw in the veil too. There is no way you should have to be out of pocket for their mistake. I agree with some of the ladies I think they switched the two dresses thinking you wouldn't know the difference

I really appreciate all your comments ladies! My family and I feel exactly the same but the shop simply won't budge and say say legally they shouldn't do anything and no other bridal shop would. They clearly have looked into their obligations.

The seamstress who was going to alter the dirty dress suggested I go back and try on the dress ordered in for me so I am going back at lunchtime. The owner won't be their as she has just had a baby so god knows what will happen.

I could just cry in all honesty and it really has ruined the whole experience.

    Update... What a disaster...
Without my permission the bridal shop had put my dress back on the rack so for a week people have been allowed to try on my dress so is no longer new. It just did up out was so tight I couldn't wear it.
I just cried.. Every excuse they came up with I could argue my side and they had to agree with my point. It was even almost admitted that they should have ordered the next size up!
However, nothing has been agreed as the owner is away and basically I'm left with no dress right now.
    So upset x

Aw Hun, I really feel for you that is awful! I would just tell them you want your money back. Could you maybe start going round shops like w3d 2b3 that you can buy there and then or other bridal shops to see what you can get at this short notice? I don't think you will ever be happy with that dress now. If you still really love the dress though I would demand the dress that is off the rack is altered and cleaned free of charge. You should also be getting a good refund. They measured you and advised the size to get, the blame clearly lies with them! Hope you get sorted, sending you lots of hugs! Xx

Oh nooo that's totally rubbish! All I can suggest is you lol around your local bridal shops for a wedding dress sales and see if you can get a new one off the rack. If you still can have your dress you could accept it and put it up for sale on the interweb. You may not get exactly what you paid for it but you will defiantly get something for it... Xx

We asked for a refund while we were at the shop but the assistant said that would not be possible. They said depending on your measurements, they should always go with the next size up in the dress if even one of the measurements is in the next size braces. One of mine was but despite this they still ordered the smaller size.
My mum is currently waiting to hear from the owner.
I just want a refund and to then buy a dress from somewhere else off the rack but I highly doubt they will.
We basically have to lump it x

How dare they put 'your dress' on the rack!! Have paid fully for it?? If you have that is your dress not theirs....

I would certainly be taking this to trading standards.

You want your dress brand new, that's what you paid for not some tried on dress!!

Owner away or not, someone will be in charge in her place!! You go in there and do not leave until it is sorted....

I think they had assumed wrongly that because the seamstress took the bigger size with her, they had the right to put my dress on the rack without asking us and before the situation was resolved. So both dresses are (used)!!!

    im actually in shock!

how can these people work in a bridal shop when they have no consideration for the brides feelings. They can resell that dress, so give you a refund and let you find a new dress!! I feel so sad for you as this isnt fair on any bride to go through, im sure you have enough to think about without this!

I would see if your mum (or you if you have time) could go to trading standards, even the local paper! They shouldnt be allowed to do this :( xx

I literally cannot express how upset I am that my parents have paid out so much money for a used dress. I literally cannot put it into words.
We are due to hear from the shop tomorrow but I know we will be told the same again, we are lucky they had another dress (used) that they were willing to swap free of charge. No other bridal shop would do that and legally they don't have to do anything.

Like Michelle says, they do have to give you what you paid for!! You purchased a dress, fully paid for by what I can gather yet they have allowed others to get in it!! You have a receipt I presume?? That's your evidence that you have purchased a dress........

Ask them for the sizes they submitted.... All shops have this paperwork and so you can see where it's gone wrong!! Oh my g0d, I would not let this go!! Do not settle for anything other than either a full refund or the dress you ordered (brand new)

They are probably just hoping you will cave and take the easy option of a 2nd dress as they know it's close to yiur wedding and you will be stressed but they are playing you- do not accept this- get your refund and go to another shop!

I really do feel for you but with these things you cannot let people like this win! It's the one thing my mum taught me, if you know they are in the wrong don't give in until you get he outcome you want!

Think it happens more than you think!

When I went to try dresses on every dress I tried was almost perfect but not quite right. The lady at the bridal shop said "wait a minute I think I've got something that's perfect"
Disappeared upstairs and came down with another dress that wasn't on the rack. I put it on and it was perfect like she said.
I said I would take it, that's the one. She then replied
"You can't have this dress because it belongs to another bride and I've already sold the sample...."
My face fell!! OMG I've just unknowingly had another brides dress on!!

"don't worry though I will try and see if I can source another one...."
Needless to say I didn't return to that shop, and hopefully the poor bride never found out, I was mortified!

dress update - the owner will not give us her final statement/proposal until the latest this Wednesday. We have asked for a refund but that won't be given. We have asked for a brand new dress which is different to mine as I no longer want it given all the problems we have had and that is being reviewed, but I know that won't be given.
I feel awful as she has been in hospital after having her first baby on Wednesday and she doesn't need this headache while clearly things are not good for her as she is still in hospital.

See what Wednesday brings and the threaten them with Tr@ding St@ndards if they won't refund or replace. They should know better than to do this to brides!! Poor business practice in my opinion!

And as harsh as this sounds, I feel for the owner regarding her hospital stay however, she should ensure there is adequate management cover in the shop..... She's known for 9 months that she is going to be pre occupied! Harsh I know but it's true!

I would say you're not backing down with the refund. She's sold you something as new and it is now used. She's sold you something that is not what she said it is. That to me is a trading standards issue and affects your consumer rights.

It might be a stressful time for her and the issues she's had with giving birth, but she also needs to understand that weddings are also a stressful time for any bride.

Besides, we ALL have one stress or another. As harsh as it may seem, that's life!

Update! Well no update actually. we have not heard a thing all day.
I have this feeling she is stringing us along until Wednesday now. Really effecting what we can and can't do. She knows that without a refund we cannot buy another dress so she really is effecting everything.
I am so pleased that you all agree with how I feel. I can honestly say not one person has sided with her as a business owner, everyone has said how bad she has treated us.
We will be going to a small claims court if needed.
This whole thing has totally ruined the entire process for me as a bride and my mum. I now really dislike the wedding dress due to everything that happened.
Going back in Friday allowed us to have more facts on our side too. She ordered the wrong size dress as we were told if any of the measurements taken fall into the next size dress up then they would order the bigger size which they didn't do and my measurements haven't changed so they now cannot blame me as they initially tried to do also.
My dress went on the rack so other brides to be could try it on so now I don't have a brand new dress at all, even if it is too small for me!
This whole issue is dragging on so much my mum literally got 2 hours sleep last night worrying about it, and I am having the same dreams every night of trying to find a wedding dress!
    It's literally crazy! X

Im glad your sticking up for yourself, and all the other brides this happens too! I would definitely tell her your going to the small claims court, see whether that changes her mind about the refund xx

Hello all - update alert! No update!!!!!

Not heard anything - I knew we wouldn't. The owner of the ship knows we go on holiday for a week tomorrow and so she has decided to leave us hanging so that when she does give us her response, we are away so cannot do anything - not sure how much more of this we can take! My mum is litterally not sleeping (2 hours a night) with worry.

    I really have lost £1200!! X

Oh FFS..... Hat time do you go tomorrow? Is there anyway you can contact them prior to leaving?? Answer phone message telling them that you are contacting TS??

Name and shame them to your local paper/FB page..... I seriously would rag them about this!

If you are away, can your mum take over??

Your mum has paid (hasn't she?) the dress actually belongs to her (but for you) surely they can deal with your mum?!
