hello ladies.....
Day 2 on cake watch!!!
this is what i have done so far today... i decided i loved the birdcage for a topper and wasnt going to be defeated by american postage... the croc is never defeated and will keep going until i get what i want or its perfect!!!
so ive been out today only to the bank but passed a shop with a birdcage and spent he next 2 hours sourcing the rest so got some stuff and this is what i have created for my cake topper a birdcage with 2 love birds in it ..... what do we think?? how can we improve it????
DIY bird topper
madison... ill write some tips to remove bumps etc later tonight after i have done some more tiers as i know how to do it but will have to jot down as im doing it what it is i do to stop all that (if it makes sense)
lisa... top tier is a dummy ( dummys are harder to ice imo as they slip more as they are light so you cant apply too much pressure otherwise they move around the turn table where as a cake is solid and heavy so doesnt fly lol) and the size of the top tier is 17cm heigh which is 6.69 inches

CommentAuthorStave
Very pretty, is it a tea light in the middle?
CommentAuthormadison_uk
thanks croc that will be great, loving the bird cage glad you found one :)
CommentAuthorCroc
it is indeed Jae.... i dont know weather to take that bit out and fill the whole and wire in a paper rose to block the gap the same as the paper roses round the bottom that ive wired in ....
the birds are from yankie candles and all i did was bend 2 of the metal leaves into the cage and they slipped over that...
im seriosly considering perhaps spraying the cage gold... but only once the cake is complete so i can see if it needs it
i just dunno if it needs adding to

Ahhhhh the little birds ...........

It's going to look amazing! Have you sourced dummy cakes that are that deep? Or have you used a couple of dummies to get that height? The ones that I have found are only 3" deep
I love my lickle Ava
CommentAuthorCroc
lisa..... i have dummies that size all the dummies i have are that deep .... the industry standard is 3" deep for dummies hence why most on the tinternet only 3"the place where i got mine from had them specially done and was £35 for a 6 tier cake .... how ever if you can stick 2 3" ones together but use pva glue and make sure the joins are well covered other wise you may get bumps or indents when smoothing over the icing.... am sure thou after my wedding when i have a little more time i could source you what ever shape or size you needed if you wanted them as i know someone who makes bespoke polystyrene shapes!!

Oooooh meant to be! I would probabably spray the cage gold and then wrap pearls around the knoby bit of the handle on the top just above where the solid piece meets the cage..if that makes sense!!! I would be tempted to fill the bottom of the cage with pearls or crystals too unless it is too high for the bottom to be seen that is!!! Fab!

wheres mog and das when ya wanna prove a point lol
lisa... the tiers will be spaced by spacers which are acrylic rounds basically so that there are gaps to put flowers ... but there loads of different types of spacers some you can fill with beads, coloured water, mirrored etc ...

I really like this cake, but I don't think it would look right if I used pillars/separators because of the black. I would love to know what you would have?

CommentAuthorCroc
if i waas having that cake you could use a seperator a bit like
but in black satin
filled with black pearls
possibly displayed on this
i would seperate the to tier from the 2nd and 3rd tier
this is my favourite way for vintage cakes to be seperated

abit like this its called a trophy seperator

Love the idea of black pearls in those clear separators. This might sound stupid, but do you have to put dowels in dummy cakes? If you do, how do you do it?
I love my lickle Ava
CommentAuthorRachie :D
Lisa you could use a thiner black ribbon??

lisa.... dummy cake layers are strong enough to stand on...so simply hot glueing the tiers together is enough to stop them moving... you only dowl a cake to support the weight of the other cakes on top... so dummy cakes or dummy tiers dont need dowling :O)
