To double barrell or not??? I am proud of my name and my heritage so really want to keep mine but I suspect h2b feels that me taking his name is a mark of respect. I would either be Emma Anderson-Newton or Emma Newton. Help....hmmm...should have done a poll! lol

Tbh, it's a bit wordy/syllabaly, in my opinion. If I did mine which I was considering at one point, it would be Goodwin-Nicholson and that's the same number of syllabals. I thought it sounded silly, so decided against it. I'd taking Dave's name, but only in my personal life. In my work life I will remain Goodwin.

We're double-barrelling, much to his parents' distaste. I think it's nice to have a name that is both of yours; a team name so to speak. Our children will be double-barrelled whatever happens as, if we don't double-barrel, I will keep my name and he will keep his and I'm damned if my kids won't bear my name.

I looked into this, as I want to keep my Sir name as I want same name as my children. It say that the H2B will after change his name by deed poll 3 months before we wed to Kirkbright-Burchall. Or I can change my sir name to a middle name.

Hope it works out for you x

I have posted this before on a different thread..women took their Sir's Name because when they married they became his property..he could do whatever he wanted with you..you ceased to be your own person and became an extension of your Sir. It had nothing to do with love and respect. If changing your name is a mark of love and respect then I think either part could change their last name as i hope we love each other equally. Double barrelling is a good idea..but then if you child has a double barrelled name and marries a person with a double barrelled name..do they then have a quadrupled barrelled name LOl..it is a pyramid effect..
The female side of my family have taken their maiden name as a middle name instead..eg. Elizabeth Riley Bell and Audrey Gibson Cresswell.
My concession is that I have taken my husband's last name as my former names have no meaning to me but I want to be addressed as Mrs R Tofts and Mr R E Tofts not as Mr and Mrs R Tofts..so I am a person in my own right. x

So Im gonna have to change to Simmonds.

which is fine by me as I want to be my husbands property - I want people to know Im his.

Its a tricky one, my son from a previous relationship has my surname, mine and H2Bs 2 children have his name.
H2b wants to keep his name as it is and I want to have the same name as my children so looks like im going to take his name and change my eldest sons name by deedpoll but I would to have loved to keep my name.

Wow some interesting replies and a few made me chuckle...well I know what we'll be talking about over dinner tonight! LOL Still undecided. I don't think he'd want to take my name as he already has 2 middle names. Yes (looks up for name of person) Heather I did wonder if it had too many syllables....I didn't see your post Ricky but it made me smile. Plus children...yes...hummm. Decision not made.

Oh I'm on the fence about it. I tried to bring up the subject of keeping my own surname to h2b but he thinks it's weird...and just another one of my issues I've thought too much into (I have a lot of opinions about stuff lol) but I like my name, I've had it all my life! I love my family, I'm not having children so that issue isn't important and I'm not exactly thrilled about the fact of being addressed as Mrs Murray, like his mum as I don't like her much. I don't really see the point in having to change my name (and all the bother having to tell everyone like banks etc) other than people assuming he is Mr Dickson because I'd be Mrs Dickson.

My mum kept her name 30 years ago. It's not that unusual.

Actually most women in Scotland kept their names until the 20th Century.

as many of you know I have a double barreled name and only end up shortening it because it is a pain. its sounds lovely but actally is not all that practical. like on the phone people do not understand that you can have two sirnames and if they look for you under just one they will not find you.
this is something people forget but do need to consider before you take this decision.
personally I cannot wait to be rid of my name

I might have kept my greek name as it connects me to a family in cypress i havent met but day doesnt. I will be changing mine to mrs brice as i want to be his wife in name as well as everything else.
Your double barrel name does sound nice although would be a pain for kids to learn to write lol xx

Me and my H2B spoke about double barrel as there's only me and my sister so our name is going to be no more if we were both to change, but if I went along the route of a double barrel then it would be Couchman-Bradshaw which I think could be seen as us a form of punishment for any child we have... could you image writing that when your 5! We even thought of combining sections of our surnames to come up with a new one.. the only combination that sounded right was Bradman, but I didn't think it was right for us.

So I have decided to that I will be Mrs Bradshaw, even though H2B can't understand why as he thinks the name is really common. But now that I have mentioned this in the office, the girls are petitioning for me to name my first child Carrie (if its a girl that is) obviously after the lovely Carrie Bradshaw from Sex In The City.

Ah girls, some of you have had me in stitches this morning. I was explaining to H2B last night that when I was younger I was made to take my step fathers name and hated it, I am also very proud of our heritage. Whenever times have been tough my Dad would always tell me that I'm an Anderson, that Grandad (he survived 3 years in a POW camp in Taiwan) lived through that so that he could have my Dad, Uncle and Auntie and through Dad, me, that we are strong and that nothing and no one will break us. So I really do hold a lot to my name. But I agree, double barrelling for children is a bit mean so I would have a different name to my children. I love H2B, obviously or I wouldn't be marrying him, and I do want to take his name so right now it's a bit of a struggle. Ringing Dad on Sunday and I'm going to ask him. It could go one of 2 ways, he'll either say that's a lovely idea or that I'm an Anderson no matter what I change my name to, it's who I am! We'll see eh. I am considering the option someone mentioned on here though, adding it as a middle name.

Someone asked if I'm Emma Louise or Emma, it's just Emma, I use Emma Louise because I had an irrational moment about identity theft! LOL Yeah makes no difference now eh!!!
