...got scaffolding all over it and according to the website this won't be down until November 2011!!!! I am so upset! I was in tears last night when I found out and I am so annoyed with the church for not telling me that this would happen! I have hand made 140 invites and if I decide to change the church (which I really don't want to) I will have to remake and rebuy all the the materials for the invites. I am gutted! Everything was going so well and now this has happened I really don't know what to do. I have thought about another church but I want to get married there as it is the church I grew up next to and holds a lot of strong memories for me but I am so worried about the image of it on the wedding day and what the photos will look like, plus the impression it will give my guests. I am going to phone the parish office up tomorrow and explain my annoyance that no one told me this would be happening! They are charging full whack for the church (£500) but I am reluctant to pay this if it is going to look like a building site.
Any advice would be most welcome! I am so gutted!!!

They should have told you, it's a good idea to call them up or maybe even a face to face meeting with them maybe? And explain things from your viewpoint- you can play the if I knew, I might have had my wedding at a different church card and the photos won't have the same aesthetic value etc. Maybe they will reduce the price, or reconsider different options? Depends what alternatives you would prefer- changing the wedding date? venue? reduced price? Or just taking more picture inside the church or at the entrance, depending on where the scaffolding is? xo

oh no huni! defiantely talk to them before you make any rash decisions! the scaffolding might not be as bad as you think, but i agree, they should have pre warned you! you never know the scaffolding might even be don by then. i know they have said november but they might get whatever they are doing done before then! as for your invites, dontworry about making whole new ones, just get things to change the date/destination. i know its more expense but try not to get too disheatrened about it! keep us posted and good luck x

Just have the photos elsewhere. It might be emergency work so surely its better than the church falling down around you?

i agree with dove, its what happening inside the church thats important hun, you could have some photogaphs taken inside the chuch, or you photographer will probably be able to use photoshop and delete the scaffolding if it is in your pics perhaps?
i know it must be horrible but is there someweher near by were you could take gorgeous photos?
hope you get it all sorted xx

They may not have known at the time you booked but they should have kept you updated. If they give you a discount would you stay there

At the risk of offending anyone I think you need to decide if you are getting married in a church because of what it means or for what it looks like. I wouldn't be happy if my church had scaffolding on but I would still get married there as I have chosen the church because of where it is, family connections etc- not just because it looks pretty. Your photographer will still be able to get some lovely shots inside and in the grounds, you don't have to have scaffolding in any of your shots. If you do decide to 'complain' to the priest about it and mention that you'd like a reduced rate or something like that he may take a dim view of it and this could affect your relationship with him- and that would be much worse than having some scaffolding up. I don't mean to upset anyone so please don't take offence x

have you discussed this with your photographer, as to whether they think it will affect your photos, a talented photographer will be able to take shots where it is obvious. my friends photographer even airbrushed the double yellow lines out of her aerial group shot. there are ways around it don't despair. think nini makes a good point, it's the connection and memories to the church that are important.
hope all works out well for you x

Like others have said, maybe there is somewhere else you could have pictures like in the grounds or on a side where there may be no scaffolding?
If there really is no where and you don't want to go anywhere else, perhaps see if they will do a discount for you.

thanks for the comments guys, maybe my first post seemed a bit shallow but it isn't just the pics though...the front entrance where i will walk in is completely covered in scaffolding, i am getting married there because of what it means and not what it looks like but that doesn't mean it is any less upsetting, we wouldn't have minded as much if we had known but they didn't tell us and the signs around the church indicate this work has been planned since 2008 and we weren't told. we haven't met with the vicar yet, only dealing with a lady in the parish office. the pics can be taken in different places but this is obviously not what we had planned, but i am just annoyed that i will have to walk into a building site on my wedding day.

Photoshop works miracles and can get rid of things like scaffolding! Also the chances are that you won't have that many with the church as a backdrop so I wouldn't worry too much. I would talk to your photographer about it and see what they can do.

Is there another entrance?

there is a small side entrance which i/we will use but this is not what i had dreamed of...i have popped a picture on my profile of the front, this is half way through the scaffolding being put up...it will all be up by the end of next week, i will wait to see what the church office say about it all and go from there

Say you are worried about logistics rather than looks. I'm sure you won't be the only one worried.

Hopefully they will work on one area at a time, so by the time the wedding comes around they may have finished work on the entrance and removed the scaffolding from that area, ready to start on another bit. I know this was what happened at our local church. x
CommentAuthorGemLouise
yeah i hope so lelbel1, i am going to call them tomorrow and talk about the logistics as frau mentioned, i just hope we get great weather all year round so that the work can be completed quickly.

I wouldn't panic too much just yet. Chances are they put it up where they are working at the time and then move it about as the work gets done over the months. Chances are it could be around the back by the time you get married. I would go and find out who is in charge of the restoration project and ask them what work is taking place at the time of your marriage and where the scaffolding will be. Someone somewhere will be able to give you the answers. Its not just smarties that have them you know ;)

They should have explained that to you it happened to my friend she was getting her son christened and a couple of weeks before the day they started putting scaffolding up. However they still had the christening there and it was still beautiful just unfortunate. However it is sad to know what's happening to your church however I wouldn't panic too much the work could be done before your wedding fingers crossed keep smiling xx
