My aunt is a composer and I have asked her to arrange the music for me and w2b to walk down the aisle to. I'm looking to have a medley of wedding classics, a hymn and maybe a couple of contemporary songs. She's very clever at mashing stuff together but the tunes need to be quite complimentary in terms of keys and tempo.

What I need help with is creating a shortlist of some of the tunes that I want incorporated into it. She'll have creative licence to choose the final ones but I need to put forward some suggestions.

It will have to be played on the piano so bear that in bind.

    To get us started:

Amazing Grace (because I'm a bit narcissistic that way!!)
You are so beautiful to me
My love is like a red red rose (because I'm Scottish)

    I am vetoing
    Canon in D
    Claire de lune

but could do with some interesting suggestions on the classical music side in particular.

    Thoughts? Thanks ladies x

so basically you're after slower classical pieces? I'll have a look and get my thinking cap on - I did music at uni and did lots of composition so hopefully will be able to help! xx

Ok here's what I've come up with, they're all slower pieces but all beautiful in their own right :o)
Stars and Butterflies (From Pride and Prejudice) - Marianelli
The Butterfly Waltz - Brian Crain
    Ode to Joy – Beethoven
Sheep May Safely Graze - Bach
Air on the G String – Bach
Eine Kleine Machtmusik - Movement 2. – Mozart
Sonata Pathetique (Sonata No.8 in C minor – beginning only) - Beethoven

    Hope that's useful :o) xxx

I find "Kleine Nachtmusik" quite bouncy! :-)

So it's classical slow music you are after?

    On top of my head

    Peer gynt suite by Grieg
    Moldau by Smetana

They used to be my favourite slow pieces when I was younger.

I adore Viens Mallika (Flower Duet) from the Opera Lakme but you need the singing for that.

Piano gods to me are Tschaikofsky and Rachmaninoff - though both rather dramatic than slow.

How about Elgar? Though Elgar without a chello is no Elgar :-)

I am tired. I'll think a bit more tomorrow :-)

Sorry Sara I've just seen you've written 2nd movement. I instantly thought of the first and it makes me bouncy :-)

Gracelet have you vetoed Debussy all together? Arabesque is a slow piece too and I remember always liking Children's Corner though if I remember correctly this isn't slow.

How about Beethovens good old "For Elise"?
Chopin? There's a very broad choice from Chopin.

Some really good suggestions there, thank you!

Sara, a few that I don't know but I'm generally a bach fan so will check them out. Where did you study music, btw? I was at the RSAMD junior academy for years but ended up studing law!

@LittleMissBossy Defs agree about elgar not being elgar without a cello. Re Debussy, although I do like the Children's Corner, I think Gollywog Cakewalk would not quite fit.. .hehe

Will investigate some more chopin and debussy and look on youtube.

What do you think of some Tchaikovsky ballet music? Sleeping beauty? The waltz might prove tricky in terms if time signature if trying to mix it with other stuff though! Might have it on the way out?

I really love the dance of the sugar plum fairy from the Nutcracker - but I know you associate this with christmas in this country. It's a bit bouncy but so whimsical!

How about the classic wedding march by Mendelssohn?

I never liked Mozart because of his music being so mellow. Not all ofc but that was my perception when I was younger. There's a lot to choose from. Schubert I think has a few calm piano pieces and ofc Beethoven. I couldn't name all the pieces - I never got the hang of remembering the correct numbering and logging of classical music. Only if they have a specific name I'll remember for sure :-)

I studied at Huddersfield University, not exactly a conservatoire but it has a damn good music department! haha :o)
I love the Marienelli stuff - all the music from Pride and Prejudice (the recent one) is just divine xxx

Wedding March. Why hadn't I thought of that. Flower duet would be nice although half the un-musical family will be asking "Why did they have the British airways tune at the wedding?!" hehe

I think little motifs from both could be incorporated quite easily.

If wifey continues to be demanding and attention hogging with her ****** helicopter, I might just insist that we walk down the aisle to an instrumental Amazing Grace!

I am just imagining two well known opera singers dressed as forrest nymphs hopping around a pond singing the flower duet while your w2b lands with the helicopter - that noise is obviously muted. :D

This might sound crazy but something uplifting like the Ski Sunday theme would be fantastic for when you're just married - it's so cheerful and exciting! And yes, you can get the score for it as we have it at home :-)
