Grrrrr...... In-laws!!! Just need to rant!!! We were all out for an evening meal (my parents are separated and they both live up North, so they visit me down in Essex separately!) with my mum, her friend, my sister and my H2B and his parents and as things always do the conversation turned to the wedding!! They were talking about the wedding breakfast and speeches. My mum then said "I thought about making a speech on behalf of Becky's dad, I would really love to say a speech"......then all of a sudden my MIL2b starts going on about how that can't happen and how it has to be my Dad to speak, which then turns the atmosphere into something that resembles an Antarctic freezer!!! I was so annoyed me and my H2B had an argument when we got home. I have my reasons why I would love my mum to make a speech, my Dad is dyslexic and I remember him reading me bedtime stories when i was younger and he use to struggle telling them. I know if I were to put that pressure on my Dad he would be anxious and nervous and would really spoil the day for him, don't get me wrong if he wants to say a little something that's fine, but a speech would be too much for my dad. I explained these reason's to my H2B and he understood, but you know when some things just grate and you feel like shouting it's mine and Phil's wedding and we will do what we damn well want!!! Rant over.... but it did get me wondering has anyone else had their mum stand up and do a mother of the bride speech?

i'm having my mum do it, but to be fair she's giving me away because my dad died years ago. However, I suppose I could have asked my grandad - if you want your mum to do it, there's no rulebook that says she can't! Sod the mother in law, i'm not listening to mine (a whole other story, different thread! lol) and you do what YOU want to do! xx

My mum is giving me away, but am not sure if she'll make a big speech, maybe a little one in French but she don't really speak English so what I was thinking of doing, whoever is doing a speech I'll have translation for the other party. I think it's lovely that your mum wants to make a speech, if you dad was to stand up as well during that it might be a good idea. he could start by saying thank yous, and let your mum go on.

It sounds to me that your MIL might be suffering from a little jealousy! Why does she care if your Mum does a speech?

I think the MIL is trying to follow old traditions that really have no need to be followed at all. We are not having any speeches as it is something non of us want to do. It is your day and if you want the bin man to do a speech then he can.

i dont see the problem with it and its nice that your mum will do that for your dad on his behalf showing the strength of the relationship between him despite what happened. i think its nice.

i'd tell my future mother in law to shove it up her arse she never paid for my wedding so why should she have a speech lol! Thankfully she won't wanna do that anyway and rob's dad did the speec at his sister's so i'm all good there.

Hope yours drops the idea but if she doesn't just tell her where to stick it. Yourday you do things how you want and enjoy yourself. You'll only get one chance so have it the way you planned not how she planned it cuz she wants the limelight xxx
