We have asked our venue about the process of choosing our menu

They have said we will go in, to the restaurant (its a hotel) and select 2 items from each course

We will then try them and pick what we like
BUT this will be at a cost of £25 pp

    Is this the norm?

Ummm, not sure hun. H2B and I get a complimentary menu tasting session as part of our package. My sister and BIL though for their wedding never had a tasting session so the food they had on their big day was tried for the first time at their wedding breakfast, thank goodness it was delicious and really generous helpings.

I just thought it was a bit cheeky to charge us?
    I may be wrong, I don't know

Im guessing at the tasting we wont have full size portions as will never be able to eat it all surely, so how will we know what size things are anyway?

why does it have to be so complicated?!

Every venue I have looked at have mentioned a free menu tasting - mention it to them that you think it is a bit strange to pay for a tasting, maybe they got it wrong?
Sounds a bit tight of them to me!

With the amount of money you're giving them to have your wedding reception there you'd think they'd give you a free tasting session x

Yeah it's normal, we paid £25 each for our taster session, but that included wine. But the way I thought about it was, where else are you going to get a 4 course luxury meal for £25 each? It was well worth it for us and it gave us a chance to have a lovely meal out together.xx

Ours was included but our venue now charge, although I think its only £20 for two people, £50 sounds a lot. I think it does differ between venues
    Ours included wine as well

Oh I've just assumed it'd be complimentary. Tbh, I'd find it a bit rude that they were charging, especailly as you're potentially about to spend a hell of a lot of money on the catering, you'tre obviously not gunna want to go in blind. I'd jut expect it to be free D:

My experience thus far is as soon as anything has the word wedding in it people will bleed you dry of every penny you have, so in no way does this surprise me.

we have paid our deposit to the venue so they already have £600 of ours, pretty sure they can relax knowing our wedding will be there without having to try and squeeze an extra £50 from us that could be put to better use!

I have emailed them, will see what response I get tomorrow.
In all fairness, this is the first stumble we have come across, they may surprise me with the reply

You'd think it'd be complimentary but some places charge for a tastng menu.

Our venue is doing a set tasting menu. We all get 3 small starters, 3 small mains and 3 small desserts and They're charging £20 per person. The only thing they're serving that is on our menu is one of the desserts so I'm unsure whether to do this or not. I thought it was a bit of a cheek, afterall we'll be spending a fair few pounds in there, but at least it's a night out and we get to have a meal at our venue.
Up to now they've not done any tasting nights so it'll be interesting how many couples take up their offer. I might leave it and see if they get back to us offering it for free lol x

I know, that's exactly what I thought. I just did a quick tally and for our day/evening food, room hire, civil ceremony and guest bedrooms it's coming up to nearly £4k you'd think they could chuck in a free meal for that.

So I got my reply...............Not as much as £25 each but still

    Hi Elle

Regarding your wedding menu tasting, we would be grateful if you could select two choices for tasting, ie 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 desserts. Obviously you may bring as many guests with you as you choose for the tasting. The menu is priced at £17.95 for the three courses and we would request that you book to come in on a Sunday lunchtime.

Our 2013 Wedding Package will be the same as the 2012 Package so you will have these details to hand for making your selection.

Hmm they haven't mentioned if we get a tasting free or not - forgot to ask when we booked. It's a bit rubbish of they make you pay, as for the amount of money you are spending their surely a freebie meal isn't too much to ask.

    Yeah each
I know the food is amazing at our venue so we may just pick off the menu

Failing that, If I can get them to agree to let us do it on a fri or sat eve (and double it up as a treat/special occasion for us) we may do it as £36 for 3 courses each is not bad for the food they serve, it is divine!!!

Will see what Matt says & what response I get back from the venue.

    I don't think I'll pay for a tasting...(although I'll take one for free!)

I've eaten at our venue both in the restaurants and at catered events and the food has always been good, it has always had very good reviews food wise, so I think I might just wing it

We are not going to get a complimentary one, that's for sure

The venue have responded again to explain further
    I will copy it below
Am really in 2 minds as what to do as I know the food is phenominal & pretty sure we know what we would pick
BUT it would be nice and £36 is not THAT much.............

    Hi Elle

Thank you for your reply. We don’t cost into the package for a tasting as not everyone wants to do one and sometimes guests come with several friends or relatives so it would be hard to price for it, which is why we just charge the normal Sunday lunch menu price. This represents a discounted rate on what the options would cost out at as the Chefs have to order the food in especially. I hope this answers your query.
