Such a simple thing but I am so stuck for what to choose for starter. How on earth do you choose something for 50 people?! Can you give me suggestions of something plainish, liked by many.
I thought classic prawn cocktail but daughters pointed out lots of people do not like fish then soup - but imagined sloppy staining liquid all over posh frocks and suits. help x

Melon balls? I had that at a wedding and it came with slices of ham.

Are there not options to choose from or do you have to come up with the menu?
For our starter, we're having pâté. Bruschetta might be a good idea? I would think most people would like that x

We are very lucky with our venue that they are letting us offer choices to our guests as long as they pick before the day. We get to choose 2 starters, 3 mains and 2 desserts.
The choices we have to choose between for our starter are:
Homemade soup (of our choice) Ham Hock terrine Caramelised onion and goats cheese tartlet Chicken Liver Pate Buffalo mozzarella and tomato salad

You ladies are just so great - ideas already :-) Yes the hotel do offer choices and while I think they are lovely they all seem very spicy or fish or something I think wont appeal to the masses. Hadn't thought of bruschetta - that could work well. Perhaps french toast and topping seperate Or some kind of bread and pate - most everyone could at least like part of that x

These are the options at my venue:
(All served with fresh bread) • Homemade Soup of Your choosing • Creamy Garlic Mushrooms served with herbed Italian Bread • Roast Vegetable & Goats Cheese Tart • Croft Smooth Chicken Liver Pate served with red onion compote and melba toast • Fanned Honeydew Melon accompanied with forest berries • Smoked Salmon, Prawn & Red Pepper Terrine with raspberry dressing • Homemade Yorkshire Pudding with onion gravy • Classic Prawn Cocktail with a Rich Marie Rose Sauce
Hope this is some help! x

Cakey, what will you choose from that list if you get to choose one for everyone?
CommentAuthorCakey_1985
Well we're lucky in that we get to choose 3 to go out on the invitations for guests to choose from. But I think if I could only choose one I'd go for soup, because not everyone likes fish, plus it can be the veggie option too. I can see your point about soup splashing on clothing etc but if you're going for an option to please most people, soup's the one I'd go for :)

We would go for soup if we were having a winter wedding...I agree, just about everyone likes soup. As we are getting married in August, on the (unlikely) off chance that we will get a hot summer, I decided against it.
We are going for a warm goats cheese and tomato tart...I was a bit worried as not everyone likes goats cheese but we tried the tart at the venue and it actually wasn't that strong.

Soup sounds good, and tbh if u lean a little forward while eating it there shouldn't be any accidents x

Our options for starters are:
Thai Chicken Salad Tomato and Sweet Basil Soup Smoked Salmon with a shallot and caper dressing Chili Goat Cheese with a tomato salad

I'd go for soup. It tends to be popular summer and winter. When we got married we had 5 choices for each course, so we chose soup as well as the usual like prawn cocktail etc - but most of the guests went for the soup anyway.

Some sort of salad is always good.
Personally I wouldn't choose soup as like you, I was worried about spills. Especially if they'll be lots of children or any older relatives with shaky hands.
