H2b has his eye set on Mauritius for our honeymoon, we're talking 10 nights AI in 4*+ for around £3500.
    I'm concerned about two things.
    A) the weather ~ I know it does rain in there in August but theres no way I could spend that much money and for it rain the whole time. Has anyone been or can anyone comment on the weather?
    B) the safety ~ not sure if anyone remembers the lady who was murderd in mauritius from NI last year whilst on her honeymoon? Although we will be at the opposite end of the island, and my h2b says things like that happen all over the world, I'm just nervous, do you think I'm being silly?
H2b is so sure this is what he wants and when we talk about it he gets annoyed at my reservations :(
Just wish I could be sure

i think your H2b is right about it could happen anywhere - there were the couple killed somewhere in the Caribbean last year too, crime happens everywhere, just be sensible and don't flash the cash
I'll put a link on your wall re weather - I know someone whose dad is Mauritian - I'll ask her

I was having honeymoon wobbles too, we're going to Italy, and on the weekend we watched Gomorrah, really silly to be having second thoughts, and my H2B said as much, he said you go into London every day, and have the riots prevented you from working? Well no they haven't, and they haven't changed my mind about working in London either! I guess there are always things like that that happen, as OP said, just be sensible, don't worry too much and enjoy yourself!

i am also in a honeymoon dilemma. we plan to book and put deposit down in november as a birthday treat to ourselves but have no idea where to go. i also had maurituis at the top of my list but i did read it is there winter time in june. h2b has come up with kenya but iv heard of loads of kidnappings, to which h2b replied that the bigest fear in kenya is hippos. your h2b is right, things happen all over the world, and we live in a country where things also happen too. im also considering sri lanka. anyone been to any of these too? x

I haven't been to those places so can't offer any info but we found it useful investing in a couple of those really honest travel guides from the shops to find out what places are like. Sometimes the inside info is really helpful! It helped us pick between 2 places when we booked ours and was worth paying the money as you can use them when you travel. Don't know if that helps anyone.

Thanks for the link Nics, it says best place is as north of the island as poss, the resort we are looking at is the furthest point south lol! But travel agent said although the it is thier cooler months, the temp is between 22-28 usually in august, so it's basically just like a really good day here! But I think I'm ok with that, we went to Spain in September two years ago and it was hitting 40 and it was unbearable.
It just seams scary as it seems to happen to couple on thier honeymoon particulary or maybe they are just the cases we hear about :(
Yeah Rebecca I would be cautious of kenya too but again it's prob safer there than it is in this country most of the time! Suppose it just deppends where you go and how safe you keep yourself.
Cuba looks beautiful MrsRobson but I think it's depending on where you go you're not allowed to leave your complex without armed guards.
I guess that's the problem with going to exotic destinations where the locals are so poor and see potentially rich tourists coming along flashing thier cash.
    I just really don't know

i went to cuba a few years ago and it was lovely- there are armed guards on the beach at night which look scary but they are actually there for your safety and just make sure any excursions are booked with your agent. we took a couple of excursions whilst there and it was so interesting, went to Santiago and there are lots of people trying to sell you soap and things for money, it is so poor there...but a very beautiful place

I went to Cuba last year if anyone is thinking of going, if you like to lie on a lounger, eat lovely food and just relax with beautiful beaches its the place for you. If you like to explore and see local culture, there isn't much to see outside of the hotel and Havana was disappointing and most buildings are in a bad state of repair - 2 day trips cost us a whopping £250!!! They're very poor people but lovely and friendly. There are no shops (not kidding!!) so there's nothing to buy either only gift shops in the hotel if you like shopping.

I went to Kenya in 2008 - about 10 months after they had all the problems with their government - it was by far and away my best holiday ever - the people are extremely poor and try and sell everything to you but you just need to be polite and they are fine, we never felt threatened or uncomfortable - it is hot though and very humid.
We are going back for our honeymoon :)
I know lots of people who have been to sri lanka too, incl my mum, and they loved it too.

Cuba sounds really lovely, what's the weather like in August?
I'd love to go see the bueno vista social club, but my parents in law to be have done a cruise and visited there and said it was shockingly poor, same as most islands in that area. Like people living in tin huts and things!

    Hi Roxy,
We went in June, was very hot so think August would be hotter but was still lovely, most people lay under brollies in the shade relaxing. Sea was so warm best to swim in a hat as i burnt my forehead :-) Hadn't realised, was so nice stayed in too long, you don't want to come out.
We had a great drink in a bar in Havana, it was a pina colada, they give you the pineapple style milk shake and your own bottle of rum to add as much as you wanted and they had a great live band.
Locals villages aren't that nice compared to tourist hotels but that isn't that unusual in a lot of countries, they get paid in a different currency to the tourist one so can't buy luxuries. They're really chuffed if you give them your toiletries before you leave. Our maid was great, did lovely things with the towels and sheets each day.
Only paid £560 for a week all inclusive as part of a package from a high street tour operator.

i painstakingly went around loads of travel agents this week and asked them where they felt the best destination was. After asking us a few Q's 90% of them said Italy, Sorrento so we went ahead and just booked. They said its beautiful with lots to see and do for 14 nights as in other areas we will be bored after a few days but not here. Good luck with what you decide. BTW we are going August if that helps with temp about 30

mmm love italy, we thought about italy for a looooong time but in the end we decided not to go with it for two main reasons
    a) i want to literally lie on the beach alll day and just totally relax and if we were in italy i would want to be out and about seing/doing things
    b) we would rather wait and bring our daughter along with us to italy when she is a little older, so she can see the culture.
But I'm sure you will have a fab time there, looks so beautiful

if you are wanting to go to the beach, this is my thought that it doesnt matter how much money you spend, if you choose a location during rainy season, yes it can rain the majority of the time. If you just want a beach, best bet is to go to somewhere like lanzarote or somewhere in the canary islands where you are guranteed the weather. Otherwise, if you go somewhere rainy, you may end up spending most of your time in the hotel. I dont know. Ask the travel agent for more advice on this one. It would just be a shame to lose a large proportion of your honeymoon due to bad weather and be stuck inside when you want to be on the beach!

I totally agree with suzky, I'm worried about spending so much and for it to rain, travel agent said on avg it will rain 4 inchs in the month of august, which isnt that bad, really.
We had thought about the canary islands but we kinda wanted to do somthing special/exotic, like a once in a lifetime trip, whereas we are quite likely to go to the canary islands again.
It's just sooo hard to chose, there are so many beautiful places to chose from

I think it would be too hot there, we went to spain 2 years ago and it was in the 40's which i think is similar to egypt and india and it was just too hot. I love the heat but it was almost too hot

Well we've only been to one and to be honest she wasn't very helpful. I don't think she had dealt with the indian ocean before becuase she kept looking things up on the computer etc. she suggested mexico but then I told her we had consdiered there but is not hurricane season? So then she looked it up on her wee computer and came back with well yeah it is but you may miss it!
I was just thinking yeah but you may not just as easily!
