So im going to the 1sy of 3 classes at our church tonight at 7.30 and just wanted to know if anyone else has been to one yet? I dont know what to expect really and im going with my mum becuase H2B is working :( What kind of things do they ask? Also meeting our vicar tonight!!! x

hmm, all i know is what my auntie told me, but bearing in mind that she got married thirty years ago that might not be relevant!! they had to talk about how they would cope if problems arose in the marriage and stuff.

Ours is a week on Saturday, each church does it differently but a friend who was married at the same church said it was really good, about learning to tolerate each other long term but in a really practical way! I think the key thing is though to get your H2B to attend if possible as there's no point only your mum and you knowing about it!

My auntie's was catholic as all my dad's family are and I think they just felt it was useful up to a point, but a little odd that they were taking marriage lessons from an unmarried priest... I don't know, I'm sure it depends on the person giving the lessons, and I guess if they discuss how to resolve problems then maybe they're worthwhile?

the thing is wev'e beent together for over 6 years and we have pretty much been through quite alot together and i think any guidence i can get should be from my parents who have been married 30 years not someone that i dont know. I just dont want any personal stuff being asked as my mum is there! I also dont like being asked questions in a group environment so may get a bit nervous! i have a friend going with her h2b and hopefully we can have a chat plus ive heard sparkling wine is offered!! x

My friend was married CofE and they had to jump through hoops so to speak and at their Marriage Prep classes it was two group classes and then 2 classes just them but they had to attend together to every class and there was no flexibility in times or anything - I think that tried them more than their relationship!

I have to say I don't like the idea of them, it immediately puts my back up. If I had to go I would do, and I'd try to give it a chance but I find the idea a bit old-fashioned. Unless the couple marrying have been very traditional and not lived together until marriage, then maybe some pointers might be useful. But realistically, nobody can prepare you for your married life because you and your partner aren't the same as any other couple, so there isn't a one size fits all. Laura4Alex if you're going with your mum instead of h2b and they don't mind then it doesn't sound too strict so should hopefully be ok! :) :)

so it went really well not too religious and we met our rev who is marrying us and he is really nice. What he said about marriage and love a lot of it i could relate to so nothing he said was a surprise or anyhting. the bit about s e x was a bit akward sitting next to my mum but he was saying we should embrace it and enjoy it!!!lol x

Our COI rev sent us the info of the next prep course in are area, he said in his letter he didn't experinece them first hand but they come highly recommended! Anyways they are £60 per couple and run for 3 Thursday evenings in March. H2b isn't too keen on 'wasting' the £60 but I would like us to go, I just think it would be nice to keep traditions. Has/is anyone been in this predicament? What was your reason for going to them? Or what was your reason for not going?

Me and h2b went for 3 consecutive sundays and really enjoyed it although our vicar is really light hearted and isnt the type to preach and ram religion down your throat. x

I think its a bit cheeky that on top of the fees for the church,plus the organist,plus the verger and the bells,oh and the choir they then want to charge you more for 'wedding classes'. Our reverend is very sensible and does not offer wedding preperation as he comes from the viewpoint that its 'your wedding' and you will 'prepare' for it in a way fitting for you as a couple.However if you feel that you require preperation/guidance then he is happy to arrange that with you (free) and sends out a fun quiz for you to do at home. I am glad that 'our church' doesn't require us to attend these classes as i think that at 42 and after 9 years together plus a seven year old daughter we should know what we are doing. I think if you are both living at home with your parents or are very young and inexperienced then they could be valuable but everyone is different. xxx

I was intrigued by these marriage classes and asked our Vicar about them at our latest visit. He said they are usually very patronising and state the obvious for couples that are already living together. He said that he doesn't do them and the best advice he could give us was to have our own separate rooms to do our own thing (h2b was thrilled that his 'games room' idea was being approved of) with most importantly our own TVs. Lol! X

I went to my first one last night! I am getting married in Church of England, we went through the preface (the info they give at the beginning of service) we also watched 2 videos one of a bit of the royal wedding the other a you tube video of Gill and Kevin ( they danced down the aisle) and the vicar discussed what we would prefer to do when we came down the aisle, The preparation classes are just so you know about each element of the service, our next one is going to be about the vows and the last one is a bout the music, I was a bit skeptical about going as we have been together nearly 9 years, but i'm glad I did go now xxx

we never had to pay for the classes thgey were free. I found the 1st and 2nd one very interesting and made us all feel even more excited about our weddings but the last one where they had a marriage counsillor was totaly boring and made everyone feel slightly rubbish at the end of it!x

Ours was in with the price. Its £41 fee for all marriage prep and appointments. Ours did include lunch though. It was a really good day though - OH was not looking forward to going church all day but he enjoyed it and it gave us some things to talk about and check we were on same page. Went into finance, children, families, employment etc. Also we got to listen to the hymns being played. You should go :)
