You'll either be Solihull, like me, or Bham, so you go there, let them know when your date is, then they'll send you a form to say when you give notice. Notice is when it goes uo publically that you're getting married, for about 6 weeks, to let everyone know or anyone who may be against it for any reason (usually if youre a bigamist lol) then you can have your license x

Ours was going to be ridiculous amount of money, we are now saving about £300 by doing the legal bit the day before (on the friday) and having a blessing ceremony on the saturday for all our freinds and family, it was going to cost £457 alone for the registrars to come to our venue, thats before giving notice and paying for the venue etc.....!!!

I rung up my local registry office and they told me how much and what we need to take, you can go separately, my h2b has been married before so he has to take his decree absolute in as well x

    The main legal requirements are...

    a) you must both be single
    b) you must give notice at your local register office (unless you are marrying in a CofE church, where this is covered by banns)
    c) you must have a registered vicar/priest/registrar to conduct the ceremony in an approved building
    d) two witnesses (usually over 18) to sign the certificate/register.

so whats the reason for the licence, i mean i presume its an old law and has something to do with giving people time to object to the marriage, but does that happen these days, is it an outdated part of marriage, or does the licence have real value these days???

The licence is 'proof' that your notices have been up for the set period of time and nobody has questioned them.
Wouldn't you like to know if your H2B was already married and not divorced?
I know it's old but it certainly isn't outdated.
My vicar told me that she has on average 4 'attempting' bigamists a year... not a lot you may think, but if every church has 4, total it up and you're better to be safe than sorry.

I know the notices go up publically, but who actually checks them out. I can't imagine ever wanting to go and look to see who's getting married. And if your OH is attempting bigamy then wouldn't they do that in a different area to where the current legal partner is?? Its just confuzzling me as to who finds out your a bigamist??

    I'm now a married woman
    I have a gorgeous husband
    Whats to do now
Theres no more wedding planning to do

rags thats pretty much what i was gonna say, i would like to know if h2b is a bigamist, and if giving notice did that then its great, but is it like you give notice and an official search is done with old records to see if either person is married before and not divorced, and then they get in touch with you, or is it just his other wife needs to be in the church the day the banns are read and object?
