Has anyone ever had a go at making bunting? I like the ones that you can buy off the bay but there isn't much choice - i quite like the idea of choosing my own fabrics and doing it myself. I've never used a sewing machine in my life though so i just wondered if it would be easy to do for a complete novice like me? I think you can buy mini sewing machines for about £15 so i might give it a go.

I'm making my own. I've done all the flags, just need to stitch them together now. My mum and sister helped me out, it was pretty fun :D My mum did the sewing machine bit, so not sure how easy it would be, worth a try though.

It's really easy to do, if you're not sure about the sewing machine you can just use a tacking stitch and hand sew them - they don't have to be perfect as they'll be hung up so you could do 3-4 large stitches on each side of the triangle for speed - if you have dress making scissors with the zigzag edge these could look funky too :-)

Actually thinking about it you may be able to do it without sewing at all - on one side of the triangle, just inside each corner make a small slit, and then thread the triangles onto a length of coloured ribbon perhaps? Could work and you'd use half the material and not have to do any stitching!

I hand stitched half of them, they look just as good as the machine stitched ones tbh. I've seen lots of bunting that is just one layer like you say, bridalmiss, my dad says it's meant to be thin like that so it can flap in the wind!

You've been really helpful thanks girls. Think I would only do one side anyway as it will be hung flush against an indoor wall. Think I'll be going on the hunt for fabrics later!

There are countless tutorials online for no sew bunting - you need the iron on sticky things. For the hem. I put a link on your wall!

H2b made Superhero bunting for our little boys 3rd birthday as he had a Superhero Themed party.

He bought loads of marvel comics from flea markets, etc and then went through them all and got the best pages that had appropriate content on each side (this was the timely bit) and cut them up into triangles.

He then glued them to a thick piece of ribbon and once they were all in place he glued another piece of ribbon on top of that to hide all the "seam" as such.

I will try get a picture but we had so many comments and have actually hired it out since as one of our guests loved it.

So just saying that you can do it without material and sewing etc.

We made meters and meters for my mums wedding... brought loads of cheap gingham purple material from the rag market in Birmingham then cut in into triangles with pinkinsheers and stitched them together, mum just did an hour every night and eventually got done... she has since lent them out to 4 friends to borrow and look lovely xx

I was thinking of knitting some, got a pattern for it, and then adding on our inititals, dates etc.
I would love to sew some too though, i may see if when we eventually get a date, i can make some in pinks and whites

wonder web, i'm rubbish at sewing and sewing machines are a pain for me!

just get your fabrics two different ones on each side, pinking shears to the edges to stop fraying and wonder web it all together. then get a row of a thick fabric and fold it over and put your flags in and wonder web it all together.

put a link to a tutorial on your wall

Crocheting curls up. (I started making a heart garland). Probably a tighter stitch. I am currently making a cupcake garland and I am double layering it to stop it from curling.
My knitted scarfs would always curl though?

I have asked my mil to my our bunting. I was going to do it myself but she is desperate to help with something but doesn't have the money to help that way so I gave her this task as she is always on her sewing machine. She is often making waistcoats too as her husband like to have unique ones so I might ask her if she want to do those too :)

i think the pattern takes into account the fact that it may curl up though.
When you knit scarves do you leave the first and last sttich as plain knit? I do, even if the pattern says purl or whatever. I find that stops it curling up.

I think I only ever knitted in plain stitch. I don't really knit and haven't for years. I am sure it also depends on the yarn.
My crocheted garland curls slightly at the end where there's only one layer byt it can be stretched down and hopefully stays that way then.
