My OH lost his mum when he was 5 and his dad has since re-married, he doesnt call her mum though. Paul's step-mum is also 62 so alot older than my mum. Anyway we still want Elaine (step-mum) to feel involved as not officaly mother of the groom but asked her to be our witness instead, she was so overwhelmed and cried. Was very sweet and felt we had really made her day but my OH's sisters are not impressed. I think they think they should be doing something like that rather than their step-mum but our choice and want everyone to be involved. Also apartently it isnt tradiontal for parents to be the witnesses - should be Bridesmaid and Best man but i didnt realise and already asked her.

Also, my parents are divorced and i am really close to my step-dad so want him to be involved in our wedding still. He wont be walking me down the aisle as my dad will be but asked him to be our witness instead too and he was overwhelmed.

I think its nice to make everyone feel involved... what do you think? xx

I am not sure yet if my witness will be able to come, she's due for a month before my wedding and lives in France, so don't know yet. OH has not picked one, and don't really understand the concept

I didn't know that there was a tradition on who should be witnesses, when I got married the first time I had both of my brothers as witnesses and this time one will be my best mate and the other will be h2bs best mate. Its your day you should have who you want.x

Aw just saw this and thought that's a lovely idea. Now I'm thinking of asking my step parents. my mum is married and my dad has been with his partner for 16 years so they're a big part of family really. We haven't always seen eye to eye but this now seems like a really nice way to put all the rough times behind us all and start again. My step dad doesn't have any children of his own either so I think this might be nice for him to feel involved. hmmmm decisions.

I must be crazy giving myself only 6 months!

I'm having my eldest sister as witness don't know who he is having.
I'm probably going to make my step mum cry. I need something borrowed and as my mum has never been married (probably never will) my dad and step mum are very happily married I'm going to ask her if she has any jewelry I can lend.

Oh my gosh! I simply love you! I've been getting sooo much pressure from my mum to ask her new fella to walk me down the aisle, and whilst I really like him I was really hoping to ask my Grandad to do it (since my dad no longer talks to me or my lil sis), and this is just the best idea ever to keep everyone involved in such a lovely way! I love ur idea, I think it's amazingly sweet that u managed to find a way to keep everyone involved and still give them each important roles! U r a genius!!! xxxxxx

KistHall - glad i could help haha !! I know the feeling though of keeping everyone involved. We both have 4 brothers and sisters each who are all married with children so plenty of neices and nephews plus 3 sets of parents and grandparents so hard work involving everyone but have to draw the line somewhere or wont be any guests as all bridal party. But my step parents are important to us so important they are involved too and keeps my FIL2B happy too as his wife is involved xxx

you should have whoever you want! It's your wedding after all, and the only people you need to worry about pleasing yourself and H2B. It sounds like you made 2 people very happy by asking them to be your witnesses, so I would say it was a great choice, you know it means so much to them anyway! x

i personally think its a great idea to get the step parents involved , especially if you are still in contact with your parents , as it makes them feel like family instead of spare parts .. well done for making them feel involved xx
