I'm looking for a photographer for my big day. Someone who us based around Edinburgh?
I haven't a clue where to start! There are so many! How do you know which ones to meet? And omg why are they soo expensive?
Would you recommend just having one photographer or is having two worth the extra money? I have heard that having photos taken at the same time at different angles is a good thing?
The photographer really is the biggest thing I'm struggling with :-)

It depends what you want from your day, do you want full day coverage? I found looking at local photographers websites and f@ceb00k pages helped, then I visited a couple at local wedding fairs, I have worked with a photographer before for a boudoir and makeover shoot and she is brilliant, so we have booked her, but I made an app with her to let H2B meet her and see what he thought and she showed us her albums and an album of a wedding at our venue and discussed our needs before we made our decision.
I found there are plenty photographers out there now who do weddings and cut the costs by not printing any pics for you and you receive them digitally and print yourself, this might be an option you would want to consider if you wanted to save money.

I never had a problem finding one as my friend was going to do it from the start. Here locally though we have a book face page for brides and the local photographers post pics there of weddings etc, might be worth checking a book fce page out if there is one for your area.

Thanks :)
I am looking for full day coverage (from bridal prep to first dance/cutting of the cake).
I would like the photos printed as I think having an album would be lovely and something I could show our kids/grandchildren in many years to come.

I was meaning for you to print your own and make your own album from your digital prints.
I like the idea of getting an album to and our package includes a 100 photograph album and we have access to all prints digitally and get a dvd slide show of the whole day with out own music, we also have full day coverage from bridal prep/ groom arriving, right through until 3rd dance or when the photographer and ourselves feel we have captured all the moments we wanted, we also have a photobooth to and we were just over £1000 Xx
I dont fancy paying hundreds/thousands of pounds for someone to take photos and then having to pay extra to print the photos myself? I think that's pretty ridiculous to be fair. I'd love to be on £100+ an hour! Maybe I should change my profession lol. IT doesn't pay that much :)
CommentAuthorSarah D
I don't think your getting what I meant, im not saying you will pay £1000 or there about if you were to book someone who only provided them digitally you would pay a lot less as there only providing photos. I was simply meaning pay someone less to take the photos and print them yourself which can be done only for a small amount compared to the price of an album provided by a photographer.
I have a full day package and a huge album included in what I am paying for and I am happy with paying that price for what I have as I know I am getting high quality photos taken and will have a lovely album also.

I just can't believe what they charge! I do feel it's a total rip off. They are taking advantage as they know us girls like photos. I never imagined it would be that price. I thought maybe £500 but the cheapest I have come across is £640 and that's not even getting printed photos, just a usb which iv no means of looking at as I don't have a computer lol. xx

Yea but that's the thing, its only ONE day! The photographer will be there around 7 hours and to charge £1,500 to me is utterly atrocious! Its plain robbery. I am kinda regretting booking the venue, I have better things that I could use £12,000 on! All for a wee piece of paper.

Do you know how much work photographers put in? My dad is a photographer.. it's not just about being there on the day and snapping away taking a few photos. My dad spends HOURS at home of his own time editing photos and making them the best they can possibly be for his customers! He works full-time on top of being a photographer.. he hardly gets any time to himself!!
I think paying the going rate for a photographer is priceless. They will be your memories to cherish!

It cannae be that much work if they are just sticking it on a USB stick!

They still need to edit the images to put them on a USB stick... my dad spends weeks editing photos from just one wedding.

If you think the money isn't worth it for the work involved, why not just ask your guests to bring along their own cameras, take a few snaps, send them to you and you can 'just' whack them on a USB stick??

Photographers work incredibly hard, they know how to use the light around you, they can shoot in very light conditions or very dark conditions, they will have the ability to round up the guests as required and pose you and your bridal party to ensure you get the most beautiful shots on the day. After the wedding they will trawl through probably anything up to 2000 pictures and discard the ones that are not worth keeping and then they will look at the ones that are. They will edit those pictures. Imagine on your weddign day you wake up with the biggest spot on your face...guess who will make sure that is not in your wedding pictures...your photographer. If you have a beautiful picture being spoiled by a sign in the background...your photographer will edit that out. Your flower girl got chocolate on her dress the photographer will edit that out. He will do this with every picture that is worth keeping and there may be around 800-1500. he will then ask you to pick the pictures that you want in your album and will design it and consult with you every step of the way until it is what you want. Prior to the wedding you will find your photographer if they are not familiar with the venue recently will do a visit to get familiar and find out where to get the best pictures. No you are not paying for them to take some pictures and chuck them on a usb you are payiong for so much more.

too many brides are looking for bargains and do not care about the living the supplier has to make. They don't take into account the other overheads such as tax, national insurance, rent, water rates, accountant fees, phone lines, web pages, equipment, travel etc.
example my band is costing £850 there are 4 members. that's £212.50 each. they will be at my venue for about 6 1/2 hours from set up to leaving. that becomes about £35 an hour each. so take of fuel costs, insurance for the vehicle, road tax, mot and servicing, then take into account the cost of their equipment and costs to insure all of that, public liability insurance, tax, national insurance, account, marketing, phone lines, web page, accountant, agency fee (they are available through agency also) plus all the hours of practice to ensure the play list is up to date and rehearse any songs that you specifically request. by the time you take in to account what has to come off of each probably only makes realistically for the time they are at your wedding £10 an hour and i reckon given that they will keep my dance floor filled that is a reasonable wage. but almost immediately i have taken about £25 an hour out of their wage for running costs, you have to consider this for every supplier.

Hey. I live in Dundee but my photographers are based in Edinburgh called @range L3mur. I will post a link to them on my page for our engagement session. They are a Polish couple who are absalutely lovely and willing to try anything new. Such as one of the places we had pictures taken during our engagement shoot was at the Museam of Scotland. We booked them nearly two years ago and we still keep in touch and they have a FB as well if you want to reach out to them.
Their work ethic is very flexible and you can have them as a pair or just the one. We wanted to have two so we could get shots of the guests as well as us throughout. We want a very relaxed day on our day with only a couple of group shots but the rest being candids and instead of us disappearing for an hour for photos we'll instead go for 15 mins throughout the day/evening so we can enjoy ourselves and get shots at different times with different people.
They give the option if you want an album with a disc of the prints or just the disc and one of the important things they told us is that my OH and I will own the rights to the pictures so we can share them with whoever we like. This means our guests don't need to go onto a website to pay for prints but instead can request them from us.

Hey VictoriaL46 we've also booked the same photographer and have just been looking at your engagement shoot as we've just had ours done (Also in the museum!) They are truly a remarkable couple and personally I think that they charge a whole lot less than what they should. Our budget is similar to the OP, but to us there are some things that are worth spending a little extra for, and to have stunning reminders of the day is one of them. The only tangible things you will have to remind you both of the day are your rings and your photos.

@mrs.trouble so thats your teaser they recently posted on their FB? Came out lovely :D Jan and Joanna are great. Joanna got really excited about the lighting possibilities in the "Stars and Geology room" when we took them to the museum the first time and I'm glad to see they've been going back. One of the really cool things we found when on the way from the Mile to the museum was the G & V hotel. My OHs name is Greg so we couldn't resist getting a few shots there.
Getting the correct photographer is definitely worth the expense if you find the right ones for you. Like you said, it's one of the few things you actually have to remind you of the day.

It was.. *runs and hides* neither of us are comfortable in front of the camera, so poor Joanna and Jan had to put up with a lot of awkwardness! They had the patience of saints! And I agree with what you've said, it is so important to have a good photog.

lol you were exactly like us then. I'm not one for kissing or getting cuddly in public. They kept having to tell us "You can look and touch each other you know!" didn't help that when we were behind St Giles cathedral a group of Japanese tourists were walking by and started taking pictures of us too! :-S

I also looked @ orang3 l3mur as their pictures were beautiful ad the package was amazing but getting a conversation out of them was like getting blood out of a stone. I figured if we were stuggling to have a conversation there would be no way they could round up 100 guests for pictures. If they worked on their social skills they would have been booked on the spot. as it is we book A1an 2n311ing who is also fantastic and is so easy to chat with, gave us almost exactly what we wanted for the price we wanted.
