sorry for this girls and its kind of non-wedding but i am absolutely furious

earlier this year in the mail was a letter addressed to A.N. Other applying for a credit account at my address (where he has never lived). i also have an account with same company so i rang them made them aware of this fraudulent act and a marker was put on my account in case it happened again.

today i have come in and in the post were 2 no. letters from MY bank addressed to same surname as previous. rang the bank and was informed 4 people of same surname are living at/using my address and opened their accounts between 2008-2010. (we moved in here 2007) the bank then wanted me to go into a branch tomorrow and 'request' they move the address from system which i was prepared to do.

after dwelling on it for a while it occurred to me that to open an account proof of address has to be shown and marry up with the name. i have just rang the bank back and they confirmed this and were mortified that this has happened with 4 people and that they have let it happen.

i have also done my own investigation online and found 3 of the 4 people live within a 3 mile radius to me, but obviously my hands are tied. the police are powerless as ID Fraud is not a recognised crime so now i have to sit and wait until a full investigation is carried out by the bank, but under data protection certain info will not be confirmed. i am fully aware of data pro but if someone chooses to invade someone elses privacy then data protection goes right out of the window.

i am absolutely fuming that the bank (who i assumed had better security measures in place) have been so lax when letting people open accounts and although so far i cannot see any trace of purchases is it not only a matter of time?

i left the house this morning to get a free favour done for the wedding and was delighted with the results, and came home with the intentions of doing some more wedding stuff but since 2.30 i have hardly been off phone and not a tap has been done.!!

last time i was a victim of id fraud it was plain and simple - someone thought it would be great to steal my credit card out of post and go shopping.!!!!! but this time i feel like im being watched.

sorry for the rant but i really am furious.

i do shred mail thats the most annoying thing and the police cant do anything unless they have bought goods in my name which to my knowledge so far they havent! im just waiting to check my credit files later on! i'd just love to know where these people get off cos surely they cant buy mail order goods as it would be delivered to my house!

Have you actually reported it to the police and been told they can't do anything? To my mind it's a crime and we have a friend down south who's involved in something similar and the man is being prosecuted - but he used a credit card in her name, so effectively it was theft which may be different.
How awful to feel so invaded and powerless to do anything about it. Have I read it right that these 4 people who live near you are the ones who've used your id, or have also had their id stolen? If it's the first, you want to publicly expose them. If it's the second, you all need to get together and lobby the police, the bank, your local councillor until some action is taken.
Best wishes for getting something done xx

it is ridiculous how some companies are being so non commital about security especially in this day and age with the amount of technology to make these crimes so easy to carry out.

police asked me if any money had gone from my bank but i was quick to point out if these people had seen the state of my account they are likely to put money in not take it out. lol.

yeah - but you don't want them adding debt to your account. I stupidly trusted my ex to use one of my accounts - he set up a minimum term overdraft, then used it before giving me the account back still owing. So I'm stuck paying a monthly fee on an overdraft I don't want and had to pay the overdraft up too to reduce the fees. I am really sorry it's happened to you.

I agree with Kimmy, I worked in a bank for 10years and they DO need a utility bill/voters roll check to confirm address so obviously they have produced a fake bill. From memory they used to be some pretty good ones i.e they looked correct but there were always mistakes, wether it was spelling or the wrong colour/paper used but it seems that the bank you use are totally feckless and don't do proper checks and most likely just "ignored" anything that made them think it wasn't right as they'd see it as a sale. I'd complain that they haven't done their due dilligence and watch them squirm.

Take it as far as you can and if they have the same dismissal attitude, tell them you are taking it to the financial ombudsman as this is your address and your data.

    Good luck chick x

Yes, Carrieanne is right. Make as much noise as you can stand the stress of. There will be a local reporter who will be interested in the story, insist on going to the next management level and the next until you get heard at the bank. Report it to the FO anyway, and write a letter to the police insisting you want it on record should anything further happen.
I would also make an appointment to see citizen's advice, then they can look into it, advise you and see if there is any free legal help you can get - if not to pursue these fraudsters, then to protect yourself.
You may well have to let Equifax or someone similar know as someone could be wrecking your credit rating as it's linked to your address.

I work for the police (Strathclyde) and it is a crime. I have done numerous reports for this... There should be a Fraud department dealing with crimes of this nature, as we have up here. Obviously different forces have different procedures etc but it is a crime.

Normally the bank requires a crime report/refence number to start an investigation, but again depends on your bank.

I know the law is different in Scotland to England but if you need any help/advice give me a shout - I'll try and help as best I can.

Becky, that's the laugh with card fraud, the person using it was probably a m8 or well known to the petrol station. I really hope you get it sorted as the stress can get to you.

I've had a problem with tesco loans when I changed from my sole account to a joint account 4 months ago. They didn't collect the money once despite now having 4 active mandates. They've messed up my bank accounts with charges because of their stupidity and not doing what they should have and now they are ignoring me.

I'm causing a stink as it's been so much stress when I did everything right and on the lead up to my wedding. They promised me a £50 gift card for all the calls to the 0845 no I've had to make and I'm still waiting (since 2/8/11). Complain your socks off love!

@kaycrunch - GMP (greater manchester police) do not recognise it as a crime. i have spoken to the bank again yesterday (fri) and conveniently they are now saying that the 4 no. names are not on their records, there is no record of dates (even though i was given dates on wed) and yet the 4 accounts are dormant. i am now filing a complaint to the ombudsman regards to this and other issues and i will keep you posted.

    hi Martay,

This might seem odd but I have heard fo this before I work for a company that collects fraud data - of all descriptions - mainly health- but anyway it normally works that a member of a family makes up fake doc (utility bill etc) for another address (yours) and then claim to housing benefits and job seekers that they live there, they then use the account to to recieve their benefits and recieve the housing benefit that is supposed to go to the landlord all in all they can make a packet!

Its normally a case of a family doing this or a group of close friends - may explain why the live so close to you.

All in all I would say that they aren't interested in your money but more on how they can make some. I even read one where the postman as in on it so he could catch the mail so they didn't get caught.

You are better off going to the council and demand that they check your address, if this is the case, they will start an investigstion too.

I wish you luck with it all hun, i know it can be a long a stressful thing but the other ladies are right you need to check it all out to make sure your not blacklisted!!!

I have a similar thing going on with my address, but this person normally runs up large mobile phone bills and credit card bills. I have even had bailiffs turn up looking for him for non-payment of council tax (he gave my address as his forwarding address)! It's a good thing this cretins name does not match either me or my h2b!!!!
I tried the police but they said it was not a crime as the person was not using either my or h2b's name. I pointed out that it was my address but they still didn't want to know. I rang the banks and phone companies but they would not discuss anything with me as I was not the named person due to data protection etc.
Things quietened down for a while but recently the letters have started coming again so I now just send all letters back to sender unopened stating on the front that the person is unknown to my address and please stop sending letters.
I know this person is not listed at my address for electoral purposes so I assume they are using fraudulent id to open accounts - is this not a crime????
