    Depends on where you live.

In some areas you can book the registrar whenever, in other places its a year
In England, Notice is up to 12 months
    In Scotland, its 3 months
(Not 100% sure on Wales/Ireland, no ones ever asked!)

We put our name down 2 years before and they stick your name and provisional date in the back of their diary, when it was a year before I just rang them up and confirmed it xx

in England you need to give a minimum of 15days notice to be married and you can be married on the 16th day for a civil ceremony, for a church ceremony it will mainly depend on the church but 3 months is a general rule as a minimum. as they say above though you can give notice UP TO a yearbefore hand.

With our registering office we were able to book 20 months before hand, we just had to pay a one off fee of £20 cos we booked more than a year in advance.

you cannot give notice till within 12 months of the wedding, but we were allowed to provisionally book ours six months before that so i did, and rang up on the morning of 12 months to book an appointment to give notice :) x
