Hi everyone! Myself and the better half are hoping to have an engagement party, nothing huge really just sort of buffet and drinks in our local, but someone at work has informed me that its tacky to host your own party! Is this true? Our parents aren't exactly the party types so there's no way they would organise it for us or anything, but we just want to have a drinks with our mates really and certainly we aren't after presents or anything! Is it cool to throw our own party? I feel a little bit unsure now!

Where on earth has that person got that from ?!?! What a stupid thing to say !
There's not many couple that's get their engagement party arranged for them !
I didn't have one because we wanted a quite adult NIGHT in a bar and my cousins complained saying it should be a family DAY in a pub garden, so we just didn't bother ! Xxx

My parents organised a very small engagement party with my family and then we arranged a night out with our friends to celebrate separately. Personally, I think your friend is talking rubbish - who else would s/he expect to arrange your engagement party other than you and H2B?

Exactly Rusty2b, it isn't like me boss is going to throw me a party or something! I will ignore her. But I am now getting the idea that when it comes to wedding planning, lots of people start saying thoughtless stuff!

@Athers2b: Yes, lots of people will say or do things without thinking when it comes to your wedding planning. They generally don't mean to come across as rude or like they're trying to interfere but it can be rather annoying after a while.

i dont think its tacky at all. my maid of honour did ours for us and it was a bit stressful for her as she did the food herself and some people were helping with food etc so a lot to co-ordinate. and we lost venue at the last minute so had to swap and pay extra. however theres nothing wrong with you hosting your own party x

I think it's your engagement and you should celebrate how you want it! My H2B and I were going to have one but we couldn't afford one in the end. Have one honey, you'll regret it if you don't. xx
