have just been told on another Scottish wedding forum that my £11-12k budget is "low-budget". Now i dont really care if my wedding is classed as low budget or not, i am getting what i want and that is what its costing to get it. But I thought my budget was a "reasonable" one, and one that most real weddings actually come in around. Not including honeymoon.
loads of girls on the Scottish forum struggle to find venues and suppliers that are reasonable prices and a lot are spending £10k just on venues!!
now there are of course some that are doing the registry office, social club wedding at a smidgeon of the price, but what I want to know is, if you want the whole church/hotel, castle type wedding in Scotland, is it REALLY possible to do it for less than £10k, as you can in England??

i would imagine so. i cant see why it would be so much more. just do lots of research and see what you find. i have read the average wedding costs £22000 but i have know idea how you can spend that much. we are spending about £10000 and that includes the honeymoon xx

not if you got to gretna! check them out real good prices we were going to do that but not all my family would have been able to travel that far x

yes of course it is! Our whole wedding is costing £10k and we have a lovely venue :) where are you getting married?x
CommentAuthorlovelylainee
mine is costing me £18k inc honeymoon but that includes absolutely everything (dress, suit hire, cars, holiday etc. etc.) that i thought mine was a great idea. My friend had a church wedding and then hired a hall for her reception and her wedding and honeymoon total was £5.5k so what you are suggesting is about average - 12k not inc. honeymoon is about right! x
I married the love of my life 23/06/2012
Our little boys are so cute!
I have a £10000 budget. It was higher but my daughter came along so had to cut it down but im plannign on getting married in our local church then head a wee bit down the road to a hotel for our venue but i havent really started buying things cos money is super tight at the moment so cant really buy anything just yet or book anything much to my annoyace but so far i have placed a deposit down for our rings and we have a plate for people to sign instead of a guest book but that is it sadly ;0(

i have a lovely venue too and am getting the wedding of my dreams, and my dream honeymoon. the wedding is about £11-12k and the honeymoon is another £4k on top of that.
but it seems that girls on here are getting the big country house wedding for a heck of a lot less. And going by what the girls on the Scottish forum are saying, they cant find ANYTHING for less!
i know we dont have the same depth of suppliers, so not the same competition over business as there might be down south, and i knew things were a little more expensive but I didnt think it was that big a difference.
in a budget thread on here, I had one of the bigger budgets. But on the Scottish forum, i have a "low-budget". Its bonkers!

Sounds like you are on a big budget forum!!
Weddings can cost whatever you want them to cost. In some rural areas it might be more more expensive as theres less supplier competition, (I know a friend actually found it cheaper to buy chair covers than hire as there was only one company in the area!) but I think 11k can get you a decent wedding anywhere.

Our venue in the Scottish borders is £3250 for exclusive use of the venue (Mellerstain house... almost a castle) but that doesn't include anything. The whole wedding is costing 16k then 5k for the honeymoon. I have found photographers to be really expensive up here. Some girls have found theirs for a couple of hundred whilst we booked the cheapest one we liked at £1250 and we don't get half the stuff most of the brides on here say they are getting.:(

Yes I must agree, our photographers are more expensive, for a decent on anyway! But my venue does exlusive use for 75 day guests and 100 night guests for £7k and it can hold 280 people. I think thats a great price :) I haven't included the price of our honeymoon so ours would take our budget up to £13k x

one of the most popular venues up where I live, Achnagairn House (google it and look at the dining hall and bridal suite and you will see why!) and it costs about £10k just for the venue midweek. Ok you get the entire mansion for 2 nights/3 days, but to have it at the weekend costs £20k. And then you have to arrange catering, alcohol, decor etc etc all ON TOP of that!
I'm so glad i didnt fall in love with that place! I love my little pink palace.............

an example of exactly what i mean. check out the size of the wedding this girl is having, and then a separate party, and look at the price!! AND its midweek and as the wedding is tiny there are no chair covers, flowers, etc etc!
""We're just having both sets of parents, my best friend and her husband and OH's best friend and his wife. Means we can spend the money on a great meal, loads of Champagne and a lovely quiet day together with those that matter the most. We are having a massive party the week after. Hoping to keep it to about 6 or 7K Beacause it's a small midweek wedding, our photographer, videographer and piper are coming in much cheaper""

We're getting married in a listed Georgian mansion in Fife and our budget is £13K-£15K maximum. We didn't want a modern building but all the older properties with an Edinburgh postcode had astronomical prices. I do know that my friend recently got married in Barony Castle and done her whole wedding for £6K - I don't know the exact details of her wedding eg numbers etc but £6k is still excellent. xxx

Bunchrew is a bit pricey, especially as we get charged for every room that isnt booked, at £150 a room! so we need to make sure they are all taken. The drink is quite expensive, £23.15 a head, and dinner is about £45 per head for basic. Oh the buffet is a bit rubbish for £9.99 so you need to go up to about £12 a head for something decent.
BUT the girls in Bunchrew are GREAT! they honestly cant do enough for you, i left there with an arm full of wedding magazines on my first visit! lol

Me and H2b are getting married in the '3rd best' venue in Scotland, £2500 for ceremony room which is a rooftop conservatory, wedding breakfast for 50 (given a choice of 3 starters, mains and puds), evening reception for 80, penthouse suite to get ready in and for wedding night, use of linens and center pieces, drinks package which is 3 drinks each, table plan, table numbers, place cards, menus, and master of ceremonis. We need to pay for Kilt, dress, registrar, cake, flowers, favours, gifts, invites, hair/makeup, so don't imagine ours will go much higher than £5000. There are many ways of getting the wedding you want, if you have a humanist you can get married anywhere so that opens up many wonderful venues...you just have to search <3

We're gettin married in Gretna - and spending roughly just over 5k and that's including honeymoon in Malta. We are only having a small wedding though (20 of us) - but it's possible to get everything you want in a wedding for less than 10k. We booked through the wedding bureau - and with them you get the choice of castles as well as smaller places. We booked our reception separately and are having a 3 course meal for approx £25 per head.

Wow so shocked reading some of these. I think venues around Devon and Cornwall are quite reasonable tho I have come across a few shockers. Mine is ... Based on 60 guests Venue Hire Exclusivity (fri 10am to mon 10am) - £2200 Bespoke Menu (4 course 2 choices & veggie) - £1250 Bespoke drinks pakage (arrival drink, half a bottle with meal and toast drink) £750 Evening buffet £450 Bespoke victorian christmas theme decor design - £600 Apartment 3bdrm sleeps 8 for 3 nights - £800 Dj £200
total £6250,00
decor includes Ivory chair covers with claret sash All table linen, runners, napkins, and candlabra centrepieces Claret and Gold organza drapes Starlit Wooden dance floor Claret padded bar fronts...??? 8 ivory sofas and 8 occasional tables in the lounge - claret cushions 4 Gas flambeaux 100 tealights and votives two twisted and decorated topiary trees Table stands and names - if wanted favours and contents - if wanted Rope lit path (from entrance to main magazine) Red carpet Toastmaster Cake stand and knife 9ft xmas tree
They are also creating a grotto for us at no extra charge. My family thinks this is extortionate but I dont think they have seen how much some venues charge for just hire. Im really chuffed Ive got so much included. Our budget is £10k but hoping to get it below £8k with clothes, stationery, photographer etc... Having a honeymoon later when we can afford it. xxx

I don't know that Scotland is more expensive. There are plenty of ways to have a budget wedding if you shop around.
Admittedly, we're not having a budget wedding and I sometimes feel like I get evil glares for that.
There are plenty of gorgeous public halls that you can hire for next to nothing and caterers who aren't expensive. If you want to pare down the budget on a wedding, it helps to think outside the box rather than only looking at "wedding venues".
CommentAuthormcewan07
it is 100% possible. My wedding is coming to under £7000, and that has been me not watching what i am spending (ie £850 on a dress) i also know quite a few deals of £3500 or so for the 60 people meal, entertainment, photographer etc (everything you need for the day)
On top of that i just got my church prices through, £150 as i am a non member , £60 for organist, £25 parking attendant, £50 for cleaner/church officer(luckily linda is my grans friend so i dont need to pay this) so thats only £235 for me to pay
