Me and h2b are desperately trying to cut down on the budget, and he brought up the idea of maybe not having the honeymoon straight after our wedding, as we were going to move into our new home the day after the wedding. And maybe waiting til the year or so after for us to get away together. Of course we said we could also have a 'holiday at home' - as it will all be brand new so on... or just go somewhere in the UK for a few days together... My mum didn't take it so well and he hasnt told his parents yet so goodness knows what they will say but at the moment its just making sense to postpone the main honeymoon for a bit as its a good 3k! I'm just a bit 50/50 about it really, has anyone else done this?

We are having a mini-moon straight after the wedding (I don't have enough days left before I go back to work after Easter) so we've delayed ours. You do what's best for you - it'll give you something else to look forward to!

we can't afford one straight away and i don't think i'd be able to get anyone to look after the kids (all depends if my son carries on being hard work for others). plus i have no passport at mo as it ran out and i'm refusing to get one then pay more for the name change so i'm waiting for that one too.
you can make a new home into your honeymoon :)

We're doing 3 days away as a mini-moon straight after the wedding, just in the UK - and we're waiting 3.5 months to go on our major honeymoon as we thought we'd be too shattered to properly enjoy it, plus it gives you something to look forward to after all the rush of wedding planning!

It is completely acceptable not to go on honeymoon right away. We aren't booing ours till after the wedding, though we will a short time in a hotel or something straight after the wedding, so we don't have to go back to ours lives straight away. x

For me, a 'honeymoon' 1 year after the wedding wouldn't be a honeymoon, it would be a holiday; I've always wanted my honeymoon to be soon after the wedding, as newly weds. That said, we're toying with the idea of having a cheap 'mini-moon' in somewhere like Spain as newly-weds, then going to Thailand a few months later (can't go straight after due to the weather, but I really want to go). But, we'll probably see our mini-moon as the honeymoon, and the other trip as kind of a celebratory holiday, or our first 'proper' holiday as a married couple.

I think that waiting is a good idea if funds are tight; you will have the excitement of moving into your house, and you could always spend a couple of nights in a hotel close-by if you wanted. But if you wait a year, I'd probably look at it as maybe a 1 year anniversary trip rather than a honeymoon?

I do like the idea of this 'mini-moon', theres this place in West Sussex that we adore (but do go there once a year) so thinking of going there for a few days and then like some of you said just enjoying being in our first home as newlyweds!! But yeah we'll defo be staying either at our reception venue or a hotel the night of our wedding so he can carry me (I hope!) over the threshold of our new home!! :)

@barbie - yeah was thinking it'll be a nice sort of late honeymoon/1 year anniversary treat all in one! Its not that the funds are tight as such its just it seems we're putting quite a bit into the venue! And then of course the house :)

I'm so glad you've all had such positive things to say, I was worrying a little bit as to whether it was a valid idea, definintely made me feel a little more at ease about the decision now!

It's not compulsory to have a honeymoon straight after the wedding - and not compulsory to have a 'minimoon' either. It's up to each individual couple - and like you said, you're moving into your new house, so no doubt that'll something new exciting to look forward to as newlyweds.

And as for your parents not liking it - you're getting married because you're adults. Tbh it's nothing at all to do with parents and in laws. You'll be a married couple and therefore make decisions for yourselves - not what anyone else wants or thinks is right.

We aren't going away straight after as we can't afford to either. We'll be going a few months later when we've had time to save up some more cash and add up any money gifts we get. We said we might go away to scotland for a couple of nights straight after but are looking at jamaica for june/july time.

I must be crazy giving myself only 6 months!

My h2b is forces and may have to go away straight after the wedding so we might not get a honeymoon straight away and I'm not bothered by that at all as long as he comes back in one piece and we get to do something nice together. If you can't afford it you can't afford it and if it offends anyone that you are not going straight away then you should tell them that you are happy to go if they are happy to pay. x

It would be fantastic to be whisked away straight after our wedding but there's a lot of things to take into consideration, money being the main one. We just can't afford it! There's lots of people from out of town coming to ours and staying a couple of days so we're taying here with them after the wedding, but the weekend after the wedding we're having a long weekend away somewhere. By that time it'll be the first weekend of December and all the christmas markets will be on. I love that time of year so we can have nice romantic walks going round those maybe. We're not having a gift list and it's only if people really ask and want to get us something are we saying contributions towards a honeymoon that we'll probably go on the following spring/summer x

We cant afford a honey moon and might not get a mini moon at this rate, H2B might be deployed fairly quickly after the wedding so no chance of booking anything yet.

It's definitely OK! Makes far more sense to wait until you're happy you can afford it OK and then really treat yourself. My friends got married last May and didn't go on honeymoon for about six months as they just couldn't make it work immediately after. In the end when the did go they had the most amazing time, made all the better by looking forward to it for a few months :)

We havent booked a honeymoon yet and we wont be sorting one out until after the wedding either. but were hoping to get a last minute deal for 3 weeks after wedding :-) dont think its compulsory really as the wedding itself is a big expense. It is better to have a holiday when you can afford to go, i do however like the idea of a mini moon

We're not having our honeymoon until our 1 year anniversary, As Kimi above we're asking for contributions towards our honeymoon instead of the giftlist. But we're planning on having a couple of days away somewhere in england after the wedding (as we have a week off work) mainly as I want to book a hotel room under the new married name!!

So I don't think its wrong at all for you not to have the honeymoon straight after, it seems like its the case with allot of people now, that they put it off, so don't worry about people reactions, its not weird or untraditional. x

We are doing the same as you Kaz, but we are going after the wedding. A sun holiday, as it is the cheapest way. After all that expense the last thing we needed was more money on a holiday so we are waiting before we go on our proper one.

you do what you want hunni .... just because parents don't feel its the done thing to wait...in their day honeymoons were closer to home and far less expensive ...... i think its lovely to shut yourselves in your new home with a hamper full of goodies and then have you honey moon where you are more relaxed about it with view to the money .

i`m not going on mine till the end of July ( i hate working in a school sometimes)

We wont be doing, we've both een wanting to go to florida together for years but have never had the cash to do it. So what better excuse to go that our honey moon. We get married in August an more than likely wont be going on honey moon until sept or oct time. Mainly because its cooler then and the schools will be back therfore it wont be as busy and also becasue i cant take longer than 14 days off work in one time, so id rather split it have a week off for the wedding but still be able to go to florida for two weeks.

Do as you please, its your wedding
