I know I've put this under the UKbride Forum category - but it's actually a bit of a rant for other forums/social networking sites as well.

Is it just because I work in education - or is anyone else sick to the back teeth of people using text talk/slang to talk on websites??? Not only is it lazy, but most of the time is hardly legible, and very hard to make sense of.

It's bad enough when teens do it, but even worse when adults start using it. I have a friend on FB (nearly 39) and thinks she's a teen (even though her own kids have left school) - and half the time you can't even understand her rants/moans.

There, I'm off my soapbox now and had my moan for the day (and all in proper written English) lol (oops should I have wrote laugh out loud???)

I know my spelling has gotten atrocious since i got mobiles!!

I love my mobile as well krazykitty (N900) because it's got a full keyboard (and predictive text) so you tend to write properly. You find some people not only text talk but write one paragraph as one whole sentence as well - then I'm completely lost. I'm the same on FB Kerrylou - I give up half way down the page (or skip the feeds I know use text talk lol).

Hahaha! It's not just me then. I thought I was being an old fashioned language snob, but I too *really* struggle to read/understand it when it's more than just the odd word.

It comes from when you could only cram a limited number of characters into a text in which case it made sense to come up with shorter ways of saying things, but these days with predictive text, full keyboards on smartphones and autocorrect on words and phones automatically gluing together multiple texts, there really is no excuse. It should be getting better rather than worse!

And yes - paragraphs! Please use more!! A huge wall of text with no breaks is sooooo hard to read. Nothing wrong at all with a long post, but please please please break it up a bit! Otherwise your eyes just lose where you got to when trying to read it, and then give up!

Haha - and how much like grannies do we all sound now?

I think in text messages its OK to shorten because it takes so long anyway but when your writing in a forum its just lazy. If someone has posted something on here in text talk I wont even read it, I just go to the next post. Its no offense to anyone but I have never wrote like that so don't understand it and it takes me double the time to work out what its supposed to say lol. Abbreviations are good, if you know what they mean, like I only just found out what FFS means lol and I'm sure there are more out there that I haven't got a clue about x

And I have recently switched from Internet explorer to Opera and it has a spell checker, so if I spell anything wrong it underlines it for me, I'm so petty haha x

I have quite a few friends on facebook who do it and i hate it. One person was doing it so much that i deleted her!! I have a friend that puts x instead of . and that is annoying aswell.

my little sister always used to text be in text talk and i could never understand any of it so i told her that unless she types properly i would just delete the text and not read it. She soon started texting correctly xx

I agree to a degree I hate it when people you proper text speak like gr8t instead of great it takes me forever to work them out. but shortening words i can understand so a lot of. Partly because for me the shortened word is often closer to the spelling than when i try to do the proper spelling anyway.

I love this, well done mym72 tfor starting it! I find it so annoying when people do not used punctuation to break up what they are writing. I know I'm not perfect and make mistakes but at least I try. Also agree with the paragraph thiing, it makes it so hard to read one massive chunk..especially when it has no breaks in it. I did Graphics and am aware of how size of text/fonts/puctuation/spacing all make a difference on how easy/hard it is to read something. I also have an annoying habit of correcting people on their speech and spelling.

As for text talk I do use it, but if I know the person/people who are going to be reading it will not like it, then I will not use it. When I first met h2b he would write a text with just words, no full stops, all blending into one. I would have to read it a few times before I got what he was saying. I eventually told him thats it was so annoying. He still does it now, but not quite as much.

But even shorthand has uses for note taking - then being written up in proper English later. The state of slang and text talk used by a lot of people is killing the written English language. In fact you could take it to the extreme and ask why is spelling and grammar taught at all in schools if it's acceptable to write in slang, except for more formal letters or emails.

Text talk isn't going to get them a career, it just looks scrappy and illegible.

yeah but even the mods make spelling mistakes sometimes, people are only human. And also, i think it probably has alot to do with the parents these days the reason kids are the way they are. Too many computer games, having mobile phones too young. If parents actually sat down and did reading with their kids and more educational stuff then maybe this wouldnt be happening.

I agree with you on parents taking responsibility sbride. There's only so much you can do in school with these kids - but a lot of the time you'll probably find the parents use the same slang and text talk lol.

And I agree Magsy - it must be quicker sometimes just to ring the person instead. But I know people who don't like having phone conversations and actually prefer sending a text instead (but at that rate the conversation could go on for hours if you're texting back to ask questions lol).

I think the biggest issue is that sometimes it is done to an extent where the intended audience for the message is unable to read it. Sure everyone has some issues spelling some words correctly, and there is nothing wrong with that, nor is there anything wrong with the odd abbreviation, BUT, what is the point of writing something in such a way that people cannot understand it?

So sure, if you are sending a text to your best mate, who writes in the same manner, then fine, you both understand each other, and the communication is successful. But if you are writing to a large audience, such as a forum like this, then you have to be able to know how to write in such a way that a majority can comprehend what you have written.

Some text talk is ok tho, and I understand the mix ups with grammar but I am a spelling freak (I suppose its because my Mum was an English teacher and my job means I have to write to Consultants so spelling and grammar is really important) Maybe wwe could have a button on here for those of us who are concerned aboutthis and magically the text "self corrects " itself so spelling/grammar/text appears and we can read it properly... joking of course
