I know the date I want to get married. I'm certain about where I want to get married so is there any logical reason not to book a venue 3 years ahead?
H2B has practical head on talking about what if they go bankrupt/out of business etc but I guess in the current climate it's a risk you are taking.
It doesn't really seem 'official' until the venue is booked :(

I'd check with the venue, some places get booked up early on

We are getting married on our 10 year anniversary, which happens to be a weekday so its much less likely to be booked up than a saturday for example but I just want it done and made official. (we've waited seven years which might make me seem patient but I'm really not lol)

That's another thing. If we book in 2011 we can have 2012 prices for a 2014 wedding!

Sometimes it works out cheaper to book now as you can book at this years prices as they go up every year but you need to make sure that you get this in your contract. I'm pretty sure that most insurance companies only insure you for two years prior to the date but you could ring them and see if there is anyway they will cover you for deposits you put down now. I think stevie_dee found a way around this.......

Once your venue date is booked it means you can start to confirm other suppliers etc so there is no harm in doing it now.

If the venue let you book this far in advance and offer you next years prices then I don't see why not, we booked ours about 19 months in advance and they had quite a few bookings already but we booked early because it's a Saturday and a popular venue. In regard to them going bankrupt then wedding insurance should cover you for this and it's worth having. Does make it exciting to be all official and real. Exciting times, good luck hun x

maybe 3 years is a bit early. You cant take out insurance until 2 years before the wedding, so you could lose your deposit if something were to happen. Also, you might just want to change your date, for whatever reason, at some point over the next few years, so again you might lose your deposit.

when we fixed our date, we were sure that was that and booked our venue. Then ended up bringing wedding forward a year, but luckily for us our venue just changed the date and we didnt lose our deposit.

    Hello!
My other half and I are planning on getting married New Years Eve 2012 so that's a little under 2 years away and people are telling us we're leaving that a little LATE to be looking at venues, because it's such a popular date.
I assume yours isn't such a big date but it goes to show that there's no such thing as too early as long as you're COMPLETELY sure what you want.
BUT do make sure it's a secure business, castles or hotel chains are less likely to go under than small independent places.
