We have changed our minds and doing the Gretna Green thing at Comlongon Castle, anways we have to pay deposit of £70.00 for each room to book now after that its still going to cost our guests £110.00 for their room is it cheeky asking them to pay and also the minibust is costsing £700.00 is it cheeky asking if everyone could throw in £20.00 towards minibus, we are giving them 14months notice to save and its only close family thats invited im Just thinking about his aunties moaning cause they have to pay that for their hotel room, but we are paying the £70.00 deposit to secure room they Just have to pay rest on the day they check out

I don't think it's cheeky, you could set up a payment plan where people can pay into something over time before the wedding - I'd also shop around to be absolutely sure the minibus is the best price etc.

If you've got no other choice than so be it! Maybe speak to a few people and gage their reactions...that way you'll be able to see how a few people react before you inform the majority? Hopefully you know what I mean :) x

I don't think it's cheeky, especially as it's plenty of time in advance. We went to my cousins wedding in Northern Ireland in April and when we got on the coach to go from the church to the reception we were asked for £10 each to pay for it! Ok so it's only a tenner but it would have been nice if we were asked before hand! :0)

    Can't wait to be married!

We've just got married at Gretna Green - and we only paid the deposits for rooms for the best man and bridesmaid (they paid the balances). The usher was my son so we paid his full accommodation - but everyone else paid for their own hotel room. And as we were all travelling from Leeds, all the guests made their own travel arrangements and paid for them - so no, you're not cheeky for asking them to pay.

I know I guess its not really, as we are paying for their deposit and also the sit down meal alone is £60.00 each plus its only like mums, dad, grandparents, siblings that r coming and they all know the score if I was rich I wud pay for them all, thats why im not inviting mates to come so its not putting any pressure on them to save or anything, just intimate and close family xx

I think you're very generous paying the deposits for the hotel rooms. The hotel I'm getting married in is quite expensive (£168 per room per night) and we're not paying anything towards other peoples. We've told everyone the details as soon as it was booked so they could save if necessary and they can book it when the invites go out. I am looking for cheaper accomodation nearby for people as well so they have a couple of options. My friends from uni have already decided to find a holiday cottage in the area to save the cost so if his aunts complain then tell them to find their own accomodation. I don't think you're cheeky at all x

I don't think its cheeky at all, paying the deposits is very generous and thoughtful and like you say you've given them plenty of notice

We were burgled and the insurance company cancelled our policy (its all with the Ombudsman now), but we had to dip into our wedding savings to buy necessities and have an alarm fitted, as the burglars literally wiped us out.

We've had to ask our wedding party for a contribution towards the suits or dress, and everyone has been happy to help out.

I don't think it's cheeky at all! They'd spend more than £20 on getting there and back if you weren't doing the minibus ... and his aunt is the cheeky one! I would never expect to have my hotel room paid for!

the last wedding i went to which i was just attending the evening one of the other guests arranged bus transport and we paid £10 each which we were quite glad about as it saved us on taxi fares .If you spoke to one of your guests and got them to run the idea past people people will probably be glad to have an arrangement in place for transport without you having to personally ask people to pay get one of your close guests to pass it of as their idea and people will be glad that someone is arranging transport for them for a lot less than they would pay individually

We were going to Gretna at first cos my h2b thought it was the cheapest option but it is'nt at all. Dont be scared to ask for contributions your not made of money. You've given them plenty of notice to save up, they will understand if you explain to them.

I don't think its cheeky, most people have to pay for their own hotel rooms at a wedding. Our guests paid for their own food as we were so short on money

I wouldn't say £180 a night is the going rate in Gretna - it's like everywhere else, if you shop around you'll find different hotels have different rates. We had our reception and stayed at the Solway Lodge, and that ranged from around £65 (single) to £120 (double) per night. There is more expensive up there and also cheaper as well, it just depends where you look.

it may be worth telling guests what the costs are involved, but for me personally i like to shop around and look for my own accmodation so you could say what the costs are for were your staying and then mention there others in surrounding areas as different people may want to do their own thing....just an idea

    hi,
i am just doing invites for our wedding. we have a discounted rate at the hotel for the date and that week, i am concerned however that some of the guests travelling down may find it too expensive, how on earth should i word the invites so that if some guests might struggle we are willing to help out? i don't want the cost of the hotel to be an issue. also we don't really want lots of expensive gifts because we are moving abroad soon after the wedding and will likely have to sell most of our household things anyway. any ideas on the best way to politely ask our guests instead of gifts they can put towards food/drink/hotel if they want? i don't know anyone who has had a wedding to discuss it with so any help would be appreciated!!!

maybe just type a list of other close hotels or bb nearby so people have a guide of were to stay, im sure people will justput the postcode or your venue into a search engine and find a hotel, but a list of other hotels might help xxx
