Sorry if this has been asked a million times but I'm a bit confused now!
Can you book the registrar before giving notice? Or is it dependant on the registry office?
Also, our venue is in a different county to the one we live in so do we need to contact the office where the venue is first for a registrar or do we have to give notice at our local one first?
I tried looking it up on the registry office websites but it didn't really help! Maybe I should email them and ask, but then which reg office should I email?! Argh!
Help appreciated :)

I would assume that giving notice is when you are booking your registrar, you will need to provide enough notice to the different county to make sure they have the staff available for the day you intend to marry. Churches are easier.

no its not booking the register is where you ring to provisionally book your time and date and i was told you should do this before you book the venue just in case they have no register available. giving notice is when you pay your fees and do the legal bit to confirm your identity. in linconshire you can book your registrar up to 2 years before your wedding and have to give notice up to a year before the wedding. when i rang and booked my time and date they sent me a confirmation letter stating the dates i had to give notice by or i lose my date and the fees i have to pay. it could be different for different county's so i would check on your council website it will have all the details on there.

lysblanc I think you contact the registry office 3 months before and at rehearsal hand p/work to priest?
Holly I was looking into having a registrar friend of ours do our ceremony in a different district (before we decided to go for a church wedding) and we had to contact the registry office in the district we wanted to marry in to arrange, then discuss with them the possibility of our friend doing ceremony so it's all done where you intend to get married x
@Iysblanc - I take it you've paid a deposit to secure your date at the church. If so then you'll need to contact the priest / vicar now to arrange for dates of when banns to be read out. Then you do a rehearsal about a week before and depending on what their like either pay remaining balance then or on the day

We are getting married in the same county but different towns. We had to give notice in our local reg office and we have to go to collect our authorisation to marry and take it to the reg office where we are getting married
The reg office we contacted first was the one where we are getting hitched and they told us what to do
Finally Mrs Grove :)

Thanks Krissy and Jill- I keep hearing different things and wasn't sure what was the case, had no idea you could book the registrar (at least provisionally) before giving notice I thought it was like what Kat said.
I'll call the office in the district we've got our venue booked at first thing Monday and find out for sure!

Feebee that's madness that they've given completely opposite info to us both isnt it, just shows it mustn't really matter as long as it's done x

Oh my gosh, so confusing! Least if they let me book a registrar before giving notice I can stop stressing so much knowing it's sorted.

it was my venue that told me to book so early as my register is Lincoln and they cover 12 sub distracts so if you don't book early enough your likely to miss out on the time and date you want. we are giving notice in louth i think and have to do this between 27th July and 27th September this year or we lose our date.

You must give notice in the district where you live, if you intend to get married in another district you dont give notice again there, you collect the papers from your district 15 days after giving notice and send them to the registrar who will be marrying you. If you tell the registrar in your district where you will be marrying some registrars will send the papers on for you. If you get married in the registrars office there is no problem providing a registar to do the ceremony, its when you get married in for example a hotel or football stadium etc somewhere licenced for marriages but not the actual registry office that it could be a bit more tricky. You cant give notice more than twelve months before the wedding. We just gave notice and booked the time we wanted to be married at and our banns were put on the wall for anyone to object. Thats what the 33.50 is for your banns to be put on display. It was very straightforward and easy.

Forgot to add we will be sent a bill about 8 weeks before for the use of the ceremony room and then we meet the wedding coordinator 2 weeks before to discuss readings, music etc. And they explain everything and help with any questions or worries you might have.
