Hi H2B is really self concious about dancing, lol he is not very good at all. So we thought we might take dance lessons or even learn a chorigraphed dance for the 1st dance. Is anyone else doing this? What are you thoughts, good or a waste of money dont worry about it?

My h2b aint the best of dancers & i trained in dance for 10 years, so h2b suggested doing some dance lessons together.
We dont want a choreogrphed dance, more like a viennese waltz or something simple x

We're talking about this too, but we can't even decide on a first dance song yet to contact anybody for dance lessons!

We took lessons. it was the hubby's idea in fact. I used to dance, but he has two left feet, and he didn't want to the 'awkward shuffle'. It was a lot of wor - we had 5 hour long lessons for just a 2 minute dance, but it was totally worth it and everyone commented on how good it was. If nothing else, it gave hubby a bit of a confidence boost.

Do you need to know your wedding song first, or can you just learn a classic dance and apply it later?
It depends what you are thinking and how well you can learn it. If it's well executed it would look fab if you forget your moves and don't cover it well it can look naff.

Our teacher asked us what our song was when we booked so she could start thinking about what sort of dance steps she needed to teach us. It turned out that we did part foxtrot, part slow rhumba. It was awesome! So it's probably best to have a song in mind when you go.

I think it's a good idea. My H2B wont do anything like that though :(

we're gonna take viennese waltz classes, as I insist to do same routine as in Enchanted, as we picked song from that movie and it's so romantic and beautiful.

Everything is now booked

Thanks for your comments,I think we will look into the cost of everything and maybe go for it. if it gives him a bit of confidence then its worth it i think

We had a kind of in between solution that worked for us.
Instead of having a specially choreographed routine, we learned a modern sequence dance, the Catherine Waltz, for our wedding dance. Modern sequence dances are made up of ballroom steps arranged in patterns, so instead of a full routine it is just the same sequence of steps repeated until the end of the song, there are hundreds of dances, classic ones from the 50s that your grandparents probably know, or new ones that are released a couple of times a year. They can be simple or complicated.
I had done some sequence dancing in high school but I had forgotten the steps. Husband had never done any dancing of any kind and was terrified of learning. We paid £200 for six one hour lessons, it took us three to learn the sequence and we spent the last three practicing over and over and working on style and so on, that was pretty pointless as on the day we forgot all about style and head positioning and looking good for photos and just stared adoringly at each other instead . :D
I think it was easier than just learning a ballroom style because husband didn't have to learn to lead as much, we both knew what steps were coming. It was a lot easier though than learning a full choreographed dance because we only had to remember 16 bars worth of steps, and we could repeat those over and over for as long as the band kept playing. I also think it looked elegant and classy while unless you get a good choreographer then some "first dance" routines can look a bit tacky.
There are loads of examples of sequence dances on YouTube, including the Catherine Waltz.

I think its a great idea hun, we are not taking any pro lessons or anything - but we are 'making up a dance' that way it will look as tho we know what we are doing (i hope) and having a few twirls etc in there will really show off my dress rather than being stuck to my h2b swaying in a very awkward fashion. xx

I'd quite like to get a couple of dance lessons in before the wedding, but h2b isn't keen, he's not much of a dancer and to be honest he'd rather not do it at all. Our first dance song isn't really an easy song to dance to either, so we're definitely going to be part of the awkward shuffling brigade! Would never learn a choreographed dance, I don't want to be thinking about steps and routines, and worried about messing it up! But I think a couple of hours invested in learning how to move and how not to stand on each other's feet would make me feel far less self-conscious about it!

I voted good idea, but I'm thinking of basic dance lessons rather than an intricate choreographed number - I'm not a fan of those :)
