We are trying to get married on a budget and have been considering what how much we need to spend on invitations. I have no idea what is good value for money and have decided that handmade is probably the way to go as far as saving money is concerned. But, after discussing it with one of my bridesmaids last night, she kind of joked that what with facebook, mobile phones and email, there really is no real reason to send a paper invitation. I am thinking that this could save us a few hundred pounds we could potentially spend on something else. I'm worried that it would seem tacky though. What does every think? Has anyone else forsaken paper invites for electronic means?

we are sending invites as its something you have to do for a wedding, we have got ours from ebay as they are really cheap, it was 60 personalized invitations for £35.00. we thought this was really good, Invites make the wedding feel real unlike email, text or facebook messaged. We are doing our wedding on a budget but invites is defo worth the money :) x

Personally I think no matter how good techno is these days you can never beat the good ole pen and paper hehehehe showing my age maybe but in a few years to come can you look back at a computer screen and think awww i remember when i got this invite and the brill time that was had by all................well no not really!!!
Where as if you keep one of the invites you can look at it over and over and over and think awww yes that was the day i married the love of my live :-)

I keep anything like this as a keep sake when i go to weddings hehehe

If you want to save money i think this sort of thing is great for things like RSVP's (i know a few ppl who have a wedding website and have the rsvp on there instead of sending out them) just not invites

I agree with Hails, Paper is always the best way, we are going to have a memory box and putting spare invites into it, you cannot really put a email response in, doesn't make it feel like a invitation much,

I would definitely say send invites out like others have said. It can be cheap to do your own or you can get cheap packs of invites that you can just add an insert to yourselves!

Its fun making them together, we got all the bits and did them. Also mom feels involved as i sent them from my parents and rsvps to them, she has a list she can tick off when replies come in.

Invites are more than just an invite - they also can contain useful info for guests, in ours we had mini menus we printed for guests with kids options to pick from and location maps. Also included gift list info and details of the hotel discount you could get for rooms booked online.

    xx

I would send actual invites - it can be done very cheaply. i didnt order enough of ours originally so bought a few spares on ebay for about 30p each. facebook etc is fine for your friens but think about older relatives if you have any, they would probably appreciate an invite x

Scott has nixed the idea anyway! :)

He mentioned that people might appreciate and actual paper invite esp if they like to keep these things as mementos. I'm forever chucking stuff like that out, I'm so unsentimental!

I am away to have a look for cheap/DIY invites just now!

I've just spent the better part of the last few hours looking through all of the Vistaprint designs! Some of them are really lovely!

Becky - I didn't think of doing that! I'm going to have to trawl through them all again now!

Hi, how about looking through your guest list and only sending paper invites to the, shall we say more mature people? I would also look at the tone of your wedding. Is it really formal? If so, then I have to say that a paper invite is kind of the way to go. If it's more free and easy then go with the email, facebook, etc. After all, when you are on atight budget every penny counts :)

I managed to get mine from a card shop. I hunted high and low for ones that I liked, managed to find them in a independend shop it cost me £1.99 for 10. However I only needed about 20, but I am sure that if I had needed more I could have spoken to the owner and got a discount. they were not as fancy as some you can buy and they did not have that personal touch. So i added an insert to them giving more details and just printed them of. They still looked good and saved me a fortune. xx

I actually received an email invite not that long ago for a friends wedding. It was a bit strange but it had a hand drawn picture of the two of them and then all the info that we would need. We just had to RSVP back to an email address that they had made specifically for it. You could always do this for some of your guests or perhaps evening guests and still make some invitations for family or something. x

Before you order on vista, I'd suggest just getting your save the dates for now - once you order, you get on their mailing list for previous customers, and they have ridiculous 100% discount sales etc! Right now for me there are some invitation offers totally free so don't order all at once...!

Don't do it as you will regret it! People like to keep them as a reminder and like to show them to other people. Especially the parents. You don't have to spend a fortune to get something nice looking. OK a text/website etc will give them the information they need but it just isn't the same. Even if you get a cheap invite from vista print and add some ribbon or gems to jazz it up get something!

Hand made doesn't always = cheaper as it can work out more in the end so work out what you need to do each one and allow for mistakes. You can get cash back through websites for vista print and they also do promotions etc and free p&p if you time it right so shop about. x x
