    Hi,

Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place - I'm new...

OH & I got engaged this week and are so excited for our wedding even though its not until 2015! Ideally I would like our parents to meet before the big day, however I have a bit of a dysfunctional family: Mum, Bio-Dad and his partner and Step-Dad and his partner, non of whom have met each other, never mind the in-laws! I think the best thing would be to have a low key engagement party in January and invite the parents, along with other family members and close friends, then everyone can meet, and we can celebrate our engagement. H2B thinks engagement parties are a bit tacky & American-ised but we can't think of a suitable alternative... has anyone else had a similar situation, or have any other ideas? (If the wedding planning is as hard as this we're in for a tough couple of years!!!)

    Thanks,
    Emma :) x

Why not combine it with a Christmas party .... Maybe do a " bring a plate " that way everyone can contribute and it gets conversation going

Christmas party is a good idea, but tell everyone in advance not to bring presents for the other people they're going to meet, otherwise it'll be a nightmare of everyone pestering you on what they should get, or the embarrassment if one group brings presents and the other doesn't... Xx

I agree, it will take the pressure off you if it's not to formal and then everyone will feel more relaxed, which in turn will help you both feel more at ease. X

I didn't have an engagement party but i deffo think a low key affair would be best, just to test the waters and a bit of a meet and great. I think Beckys local pub idea could be something to consider as it's a public place were everyone will be on their best behaviour xx
