We are planning on going to mexico for our honeymoon. I was speaking to my friend today who is going to mexico in 3 weeks and she said she was going to get her innoculations tomorrow!!! I didn't know you needed??
I phoned 2 other friends that have been in the last 2 years and they both said that them and there men all had to have them as well!
Has anyone on here been or are going to mexico and can shed any light on this, as so many sites that i go on to say you do not need, but they have all had theirs and this was on the say so of their GP's!!!
    I am confused!! xx

I think some are recommended rather than a must, but I'm not sure - prbably best to check with your GP surgery for most up to date info. I seem to recall the ones that are recommended are:
    Hep A
    Hep B
    Rabies
    Typhoid
    Yellow Fever
oh, and of course anti-malarials like chloroquine

But I could be wrong, so maybe worth checking. Also depends on which part of Mexico, I think.

I had a look at fit for travel and they suggest just hep a and typhoid, which was my gut instinct i dont have access to the NPSA guidelines at home, but give a community pharmacy a call in the morning and they can tell you
you wont need hep b or rabies, particularly if you are only on holiday and going to a resort
Im pretty sure you dont need yellow fever

Hep A and typhoid are the main two which are recommended for all travellers. Hep B is not essential, but is typically given in the same jab as hep A, so you'll get it anyway.

Otherwise, it's suggested that you're up-to-date with your tetanus/diptheria shots.

All of these are free; just phone your doctor. Also, I had my boosters yesterday and my arms ached like mad after; so, I'd suggest maybe making 2 different appointments, and try to avoid driving after (I couldn't raise my arm yesterday and had very little strength)

You do not need rabies or anti-malarials.

We went a few years ago I would speak to your doctor but you do need to take malaria tablets you can take the ones that are only once a week but remember to take it in the afternoon uk time as that would mean morning time in Mexico. There is a 7 hour difference.

But if I was you I would get as many as possible as you never know. The big one is malaria tablets.

Where abouts are you going we're thinking about going back for our honeymoon

You do NOT need to take anti-malarials in Mexico. The risk of malaria in the resort areas, and surrounding areas, is practically non-existent, and anti-malarials are no longer recommended.

We've been 3 years running and our GP advised us against taking them; similarly, the blood donor service do not recognise Cancun/the Yucatan/the Riviera Maya as an at-risk area for malaria.

So as I said, the only jabs you 'need' are hep A and typhoid; but like I said, usually you will get hep B at the same time as he A anyway (it's called the twinrix vaccine); and tetanus and diptheria are also worth having as they're recommended for most countries.

I've never been offered the joint hep b hep a vaccine, but that's probably cos they can charge for hep b alone. Although you can get it with the hep a to be properly vaccinated you need a three (or 4 in some cases) injection course but you only need two for hep a. And then you need the blood test to confirm immunity, so if are getting both together you should make sure you get all the injections

Nic: yeah, the twinrix one is a bit of a pain, but it lasts ages, so I didn't mind much; don't need to think about it for ages now which is good.
