Hi ladies, I've been looking at getting my dress made-up and imported across I've seen a few people on here who have done this but all the sites I look at state that the shipping cost does not include import tax, any ladies who are getting there dress this way can you advise how much import tax you had to pay, I don't want to get stung for a big bill which stands between me and my dress.

    Hi
I got my bm dresses from the box of light, and for 2 dresses totalling £172 the duty and tax was just under £20, as were the delivery and shipping insurance.

They told me the tax amount when it came to paying for it.

    Xx

You will usually have to pay 20 percent vat on the item, plus 12 percent import tax from china.

So, for £100 dress, you will be £20 vat and £14 import tax, however I think if the import tax is under a certain amount it is waived.

Watch out for courier fees as well, where there is import tax I've heard of the couriers charging up to £25 'admin fee' which the buyer was not aware of.

In most cases, you will not know the amount of tax until the dress is actually delivered. Some sites, such as she who cannot be named, the dresses are imported in from china to a uk distributor and the price factors in the tax so you don't get hit by unexpected bills.

I also have a custom design wedding dress from china through a UK distributor and their website clearly states postage and import tax is included.

My dress is stunning quality and really well made. I'm a plus size too and the support and structure of the dress is fantastic!

I got my bridesmaid dresses from the light, and I paid £45 import tax on four dresses which totaled just over £200, so roughly a quarter of what I paid for them was tax.

I think a lot of it depends on whether they randomly check that parcel which they have every right to do at customs and how they are sent into country,if its sent as a gift there's normally no tax but depends if they then check the parcel especially if ordering bridesmaid dresses,as obv 4exactly same dresses in different sizes wouldn't be a gift and they would know it so would charge you!

Please be wary of an overseas company telling you that you wont have to pay a customs charge , these are the right of the authority here and are nothing to do with the company abroad .. i agree that sometimes having an item marked as a gift can get you round it but you cant rely on it so to be on the safe side factor in an extra 20-25% on the cost .

    Just found this .....

Check the total purchase price of online goods
When buying goods from abroad online, it's important to be aware that tax and duty may be charged on top of the purchase price at the point of delivery and that if any required UK Excise duty for European Union (EU) purchases hasn't been paid in advance by the online retailer, the goods could be seized.
Goods ordered online from the EU
Excise Duty is payable on goods such as alcohol or tobacco. It is the responsibility of the online seller to ensure that UK Excise Duty is paid before they send you the goods. You should therefore expect the price you pay to reflect the payment of UK duty - if the price is very low, UK duty has probably not been paid.
In addition, cigarettes and hand rolling tobacco must bear UK health warnings and fiscal marks, and containers of spirits that are larger than 35cl must bear a UK duty stamp.
If the online retailer you're buying the goods from does not pay UK Excise Duty before they send them to you, or the goods do not bear the relevant UK markings or warnings, the goods can be seized by customs on arrival in the UK, and you may not be able to get a refund on their value. It's therefore a good idea to check with the retailer that all these requirements have been met.
Goods ordered online from outside the EU
If you buy goods online from outside the EU for delivery to the UK, you'll have to pay Customs Duty and Import VAT on top of the purchase price if the goods are above a certain value - though Customs Duty is waived if the amount of duty payable is £9 or less.
Some Internet sellers outside the EU have arrangements with the UK whereby you pay them the VAT that's due on the goods you're ordering. They then pay the VAT to their postal authority - which in turn pays it to HM Revenue & Customs. Note that these sellers must be authorised to do this. They'll have a special number that will be on the Customs Declaration. The declaration should also carry a message saying 'Import VAT pre-paid'. When this arrangement is used you won't be charged any import VAT or a Royal Mail handling fee when you get your parcel. Note that if the above procedures aren't followed properly you could end up losing the good

If you order or send purchased goods other than alcohol, tobacco, perfume and toilet water from a country outside the EU then you:
don't have to pay Excise Duty

*may have to pay Customs Duty on goods with a value that exceeds £135
*will have to pay import VAT on goods with a value that exceeds £15
