    Hi everyone!
This is my first time posting - I've been lurking for the past week and have now built up the courage to write myelf!
We're getting married in Kent in March 2011 and I am looking for a photographer.... I've met with one who I love, but they are just too expensive it would be about £2500 for what we wanted.
Any one have any recommendations for me?
    Thank you!

I have been looking on google - but I'm just worried about booking someone with out really knowing anything about them - or anyone that's used them.

I thought our photographer was expensive, that one's a grand more *meep*
Get your yellow pages, go to some local wedding fairs and see what you can find.

    Hi There

I see you are a fellow Kent bride-to-be! I booked a Canterbury, Kent basesd photographer, i think i am allowed to name him but cannot post his website address, so if you google, 'Weddings By Ryan' his name is Jonathan and he has a gallery you can visit in Canterbury.

His prices are around £1000 mark dependant upon what you really want, the package we are going for is costing just over £1000 and at the moment he is doing a special offer where you can save up to 50% if you book by the end of Sept so you might find you save some money!

    Good luck

hello! i agree wedding fairs are the best place to find suppliers, there are normally several photographers there and they will have samples of their work and be available for questions its a lot more informal than inviting one to your house straight away x

We paid more for our photographer that what we had originally planned, but when he explained where the costs go to etc, and saw some of his work I could see why.

We are £1950 for photos from me getting ready to speeches, a traditional album with 80 photos, a disc with all the photos, and we own the photos - not the photographer.

I'm in Glasgow though so not much help :-) x
  21.

    Someone explain to me...

You are spending 1,000's if not 10 - 20,000 on your wedding.

The only thing you have in 10 years time is your photos.

Why do you budget them down so much?

Not being antagonistic by the way - I am genuinely curious.

    Simon,

As a photographer myself I appreciate the skill that it takes to do wedding photography and that it is harder than it looks to produce high quality images. I understand that it is not just the hours you spend on the day but the hours you spend to edit the photographs and do the layouts for albums. What I do not understand is why certain photographers think it is justifiable to hike the prices up to above and beyond £1000 for a couple of hours. With digital photography once the equipment it payed for there are no overheads (unless they have their own studio which usually means they do other lines of work as well). It does not costs £500 for a photographer to print an album. I know they need to run a business but there are plenty of excellent photographers out there that do not charge the earth and take advantage of bride and grooms. Not everyone can afford to spend 1,000's on their wedding but that does not mean they shouldn't have memories of their day. You know yourself that price doesn't change the ability of a photographer. I've seen some excellent students work and appalling professional work. You just have to judge each person on their work and see if they fit into your own personal budget. Weddings are expensive but that doesn't justify having to spend even more money than we have.

Photography has been high on my list of wedding items and I wanted to have someone I can trust and work with. That doesn't mean that I should be ripped off in the mean time. I've been lucky and found a couple who work together so I'm having two photographers from bridal prep to first dance with all my images on disk for £995. They both have individual styles so I get the best of everything :)

one thing i noticed was that alot of the state that they will be there from getting ready in the morning till the first dance in the evening ...but as i(and others) am having a later in the day do the length of time that i will have the phographer for will be considerably less ......will that reflect in the quotes???

hi, we are spending £2500 on our wedding photos - we know that we could get it cheaper but we have fell in love with the photographers work! that prices includes our photo album - 3 smaller albums for parents and also we get 2 photographers ( husband and wife) as we want shots of both of us getting ready, leaving etc. They are also staying right up until the end song, so we think for what we are getting its a pretty fair price.

    xx

You need to speak to each individual photographer lala as they all have their own way of pricing things. If you find one you like it is worth discussing your budget and needs with them to see if they can help at all. Also tell them what you like about their work. It helps them to understand your style what you want and ideas and it is always nice to have someone pay you a compliment.

xjox - Bargin photography.. I completly agree that I dont understand why Photographers know how important the photos are so jack the prices up accordingly...

A good one in my opion is that a measure of a good photographer is one that you like, you like their work and you can afford...

Most decent photographers dont over charge for their work.. and those that do.. dont get booked every weekend...

I still do not have a photographer as I want one with a package that I can have all the images on a disk... not so I can do them on repo costs but because I want to play with them myself....

but most of the photgraphers my way either wont do it or want to change me thousands of pounds for it....

I'm getting all the images on disk and they are also high res unlike some of them that are reduced in size so you can only print so big. Some photographers think that they won't get any reprint sales if they give you the disk but they can make up for that by selling you the disk for an average price of reprints anyway so its not like they are loosing out.

I talked to my photographer about it an explained how I had a house flood and lost loads of photo's that I will never get back again. I said its OK now while your in business but what happens if you move, go out of business etc etc. If I have copies then I can back them up to multiple HDD's, save them on my drop box account etc etc so I always have files I can get back if something goes wrong. Most of them have been understanding and if they don't offer the service have considered it for a price. Some do ask for about £300 which I know sounds a lot of money but if you consider what they would normally get in album sales it isn't that bad and every one's a winner.

The last five pics have a better exposure on them and the composition is more thought out. If you look at the sky its not washed out like it is on some of the others and the lighting is softer bringing out more natural tones on your skin. I had a nosy at your pics this morning lol. Looked like you had an amazing day. x x

Well the last 5 are my official photographers, the others are disposable cameras lol, the reason behind me saying just look at the last 5 is because if Molly likes them then my photographer will travel and offer an excellent package for an amazing price but not worth considering if she doesn't like the look of my last 5 pics ;o) and cheers hun it was amazing :o) x

SUzi I would love the details of your photographer if you don't mind? Looks like you had a fab day!

    Simon -
I am not saying that I expect bargain photography - I am prepared to pay for a professional, good quality photographer - but I resent being quoted £2500 - £3000 from a photographer that lives within 20 minutes of our venue, only has one venue to cover and is trying to force me in to expensive albums that I just don't want..... Also - I am getting married in March - which is low season and only 6 months away....
I'm not looking for a cheap bargain - I'm looking for good value for my money - that's a big difference!

Molly we had the silver package which included this:-

    CD-Rom of Pre-wedding photos.
    Complete Ceremony coverage including:
Guests arriving, bride arriving, ceremony coverage*
After ceremony photography in the venue grounds.
    Organised group photos.
    Candid photography throughout the day.
    Coverage of the reception.
Image processing / editing as required.

1 * DVD slideshow of final images
Shared website to show images from the day.

Matt was there from 1pm to 9pm and our photos will be ready on the website on Monday and cant wait to see them, that package cost us £170 which is his standard rate, I know Pringle got a bigger package than me and her's was slightly more expensive but he is very reasonable and his photos are wonderful, I will put his link on your wall hun :o) x x x
