I had my hair highlighted for about 10 years (its naturally quite dark brown) but I decided that it was getting too expensive, and with the wedding to pay for it was probably wise to go back dark so it is easier to maintain. The thing is what ever colour I try it keeps going red/ginger, whether i get it done at the hairdressers or do it myself! I last did it on Monday with a "chocolate brown" colour, which you would think would be quite dark, buts its still red!!! A friend said it may be because I have natural red tones in my hair which are coming out, or it could be where the blond is still udnerneath that is having an affect. I havn't had the highlights since about last September, so I would hope by now the die would have taken properly. Does anyone else have this probalem, or know a good hair colourant that is actually brown!?!?! I really want to get it right in time for my hair trials etc when I'll probably be buying a hair piece, so will need to match the colour. HELP!!! x

I used to have very blonde dyed hair when I decided to go dark I had to have some chemical put on it first to take out the blonde then they put the dark colour on afterwards she said if I had just put a colour on at home it would of gone orange so you need to blonde taken out first...now I can do my own at home and I dont have a problem....maybe we have some hairdressing ladies on here that might know a bit more xx

Hmmm....did you have blond all over before? When I went dark at first, I did have it done at a salon, so I would have thought they should have said if they thought I needed to have it stripped, I did wonder that myself though! Not sure if it makes a difference if it is only highlights rather than all over. I guess its a bit late to strip it out now though - eek! As you say - any budding hairdressers opinions would help!

Im naturally really blonde but dye my hair a darker shade. Everything i dye my hair i get a ginger glow for about 2 days and then it settles down. I find washing it few times tends to dull the colour x

It was blonde hightlights but many years worth so was mainly most of my hair x
if i dye my hair any shade of brown then it turns reddish. my hairdresser said it was because i have a red tone to my hair also. she told me to dye my hair black then about a week later to dye my hair the colour i wanted it this will help to neutralise the red tones. I liked the reddish tone though so i never tried it xxx

My hair does this when i dye it it goes red, i had it dyed purple at the hairdressers and it cant out red and i was told the same thing its because my hair has red tones in it naturally and they react with the dye annoying but nothing i can do really only thing ive found that working is dying it a black or cosmic blue colour then it comes out how i want it

Thanks ladies, at least I know its not just me! Not too sure about dying my hair black though!!! Im tempted just not to die it at all and let it fade, I guess eventually it will go back to my natural colour!

i used to be a hairdresser, iv had this happen to me and iv seen it loads. best thing to do is go to a salon but to do it cheap at home, you need to get get about 3 boxes of med-dark brown semi permanent colour, use one then keep washing it out, use another a couple of days later and keep doing it til it has stripped all the red tones out of your hair. leave it settle down for a week then use a permanent dye and it should be strong enough to cover anything thats left. hope this makes sense? xx

Great - thanks Sophie. Do you think it is worth persevering with the Chocolate one I have at the moment or should I try a darker one? x

id be patient with the chocolate brown hun, if you use anything darker you might find that when you come to use the permnent dye it will end up a shade or 2 darker than what you want it to be, but it will settle down about 6 washes afterwards should it end up a little darker xx

Mine is the same, and it is that you have red undertones in your hair, the only advice I can give is to try a brown colour that doesnt have a red tinge to it, chestnut/chocolate are the worse ones;-) xxxx

If it helps, I went to the hairdressers yesterday, I vary from blonde to brunette depending on the seasons, and how I feel. She told me yesterday I have to decide before September this year what colour I want my hair for my wedding next year. This is so that she can get the colour right etc, and im happy with it, if your struggling now, at least you know what works and what doesnt, and you have a few months to sort it.
Im sure it will all come good in the end, fingers crossed xxxx

When I went from blonde back to my own brunette-I was told to dye it red (gingery) first-then dye it dark brown. This is because brown hair is actually red based and the blonde strips the natural red tones-so you have to put the red back to get the brown! Makes absolutely no sense to me but it worked on my hair! lol x

Im a hairdresser. If you are using a product for grey hairs you will get the root glow (reddish tones), as it is mixed with a 20vol peroxide which will lift any of your natural colour 2 shades and the moment you start lifting natural brown hair you get the red undertones. If you have some grey you need to cover and have to use the colours for grey hair or if your not grey at all but want to neutralise the red, is got to a hairdressing suppliers and get a tint on a base of a 4 or five that is an ash brown( if you ask in there they will no what u are talking about) as ash colours are counteract the red and you will end up with a lovely rich brown with minimal RED, and mix with 10vol peroxide is theres no grey, 20vol if you have grey. Sounds confusing but you will get the colour you want. hopw this helps x

And don't try stripping it or you will end up even more red!!

Auntie woo that because brown also has blue tones, if you dont put a ginge colour on first the blonde is looked at as being yellow and the blue tones in brown causes the over all colour to look like a khaki greeny brown, not the best look.

Have you tried not dying it for a while.. Then dying only the highlighted bits? That should work x
