We are now doing the same, after cancelling our expensive venue. We are now hiring a country village hall for £423, pitching a marquee for £400, having a hog roast for £700 and doing a little buffet ourselves. We'll be decorating with handmade bunting and fairy lights, parents and grandparents are making a selection of cakes, saving us the cost of a cake. And I've just made a deal with a local events company to hire a bouncy castle, photobooth and candy floss machine with staff for £400, including church, suits and everything else were spending £3500 (not including my dress, bridesmaids dresses and rings which we've already bought, and came to £320). It certainly can be done with a bit of creativity xx

Not nosey at all. We live near a costco who do bulk buy of coleslaw, potato salad, sandwiches etc. so h2b is going to buy all of this on the Friday evening, store it in the fridge at the hall. Anything we can't buy, our parents will make xx

Also have a look at the haggling thread; I'll bump it for you if I can find it. Quite a few hotels offer packages; don't know what day your date falls on but we are getting a great deal on ours since it is an weekday wedding :)

Indeed they do offer good priced weekday packages. We had one of these booked but realised we didn't want a formal sit down meal, we wanted more than the 40 guests they catered for, we wanted the fun bouncy castle which had to be down by 8pm. And above all we wanted to be creative and wanted a real labour of love and to cut costs. So it does all depend on your budget :) xx
