Me and hubby to be got engaged on Christmas Day! Loving this website already so am asking for your help!

I'm after a wedding savings tin/pot that doesn't require you to smash or use a tin opener on to find out how much is in there?!! Hard I know as that's all that seems to be about!

So wondering whether any of you lovely people would be able to offer any suggestions?

    xx

Have you thought about a spaghetti jar or a biscuit tin which you can make a hole in to drop your coins etc? or if you look online you can get ones with a digital counter in the lid to buy :-)

Ooh and congrats on your engagement! The best way we got started was we looked at our monthly outgoings and decided how much each of us could put into a savings fund each month - I set up an instant access ISA and pay into it each month, with all outgoings from my account for the wedding expenses - every quarter H2B transfers me a set amount and we keep all expenses on a spreadsheet, showing how much he's transferred to me and how much I've paid out etc so we can be sure we know we're paying equal at the end of the day. Once we'd worked out how much we could put aside this then helped us to make up an itemised cost sheet to budget to, and then we haggled almost every item to be around that price so we know how much money we have to play with! Hope that helps!

Congrats on your engagement! Classy as I am, I just use one of those huge oversized vodka bottles picked up at a boot sale (though it wont fit 50ps or £2 coins!) and empty the change from my purse into it every Friday night. I counted it the other day and found I'd managed to save almost £150 in a few months, so it does all add up! x

    Congrats!

We use a digital counting one for anything under 20p and it's amazing how quickly it fills. Mid-way through last year we got £80 out of it and it's on £70 something again now. They're pretty cheap nowadays I think and it saves counting pennies!

I use a cheap tin for 50ps and gold stuff, unfortunately that's not so full..... x

Boots had a digital saving pot in their half price sale - worth checking out as you don't need to break that open. We got one from Avon a few years back; maybe iwoot may have one.

i use a coffee jar and h2b and I put all spare change in there every day. we also put a pound coin in there everyday as it isn't a huge sum of money so isn't missed but over the month it ads up to £60 between us. I then take it to the bank and pay it off my wedding dress. it's nearly paid and i've not even touched my bank account yet (dress was £800) xx

We use the 5ltr water bottles, have one of them that we empty all our change into, we got £60 recently that paid for our christmas food shop. money I didnt have to find. We have a 'b0nk box' now we have our own place (an idea I saw on here and H2B loved!) and we still empty change into the bottle so it all mounts up sooner or later xx

We have a giant tin shaped like a carlsberg tin - h2b acquired it in his former life - last count we had £600 in there - we are going to use it to treat ourselves to a hot air balloon ride on our honeymoon
The only thing i dont know is how im going to take it to the bank - i know they are sometimes funny about accepting lots of change :s

Yeah that's the pain. When I took £80 in they were fine as I had bagged it up - i'd been in previously for bags, but I know some branches don't like it. There are those converters in supermarkets but I think they take 9%. Suppose it depends if you have the time, or inclination to do it yourself!

We have an egg shape one that says wedding fund, I was given it by my sister and I have tried to find another for you but cant seem to find on-line, If I had to guess I would say it came from a well known card shop.

However I did find another and will post the link on your wall.

i THINK the banks WILL take it i you pre-arrange,
some say they have a maximum number of bags they will accept in one transaction, so may mean a few.
But as said dont forget to bag them as the banks would, because they weight them

My other half's bank are usually happy to accept them if the money is being paid into his account - not so thrilled if we're just changing the coins up for notes! My bank on the other hand throw a strop at the mere mention of coin bags.

Oh also I bought a big tubful of my mum's shrapnel off her for £20 because she couldnt be bothered to change it up (I was going anyway!) and found there was nearly £40 in change, so that was a touch! :) I'm like a gobbier version of one of those CoinStar machines haha x

    Congrats huni!

I think the best bet would be one of those automated counter thingys! me n h2b got one of those big tins with the a big £50 not printed on the side - the only way we can access it is with a tin opener which is good because we have fingers which wander with temptation so anything without a lid, or easily accessible is good for us!

I think u can get the digi counters from ar gos xXx

I have a little one that I got from a Marks and Spencer Penny Bazzarre event, it has a little padlock and key so means I'm not tempted to dip into it! I only keep £2 coins in it so although its heavy Ive still got space in it for a few more coins!

I'm the kind of person that once I know how much I have in it, it'll start burning a hole, and I'll want to spend it, so the padlock is really good for me! I'd advise that if you make a jar up yourself, you cover it up so you have no idea of how mch you have in it, and then it's a nice surprise when you do open it! xx
