A friend of mine asked, 'what are you doing for favours'
Come again, I ask, what are they when they are at home?
So I have left under the impression I have to buy/make all my guests a gift? Is that everyone, or just those going to the ceremony, because that's like 125 people as it is (stupid boy and his stupidly massive familiy).... I can deal with the kids, there's not many of those going, a goody bag will do the trick, but... ehhh I just don't get it
I've obviously not been to many weddings, least of all helped anyone plan one so I'm stumped, basically

The definition is 'Wedding favors are small gifts given as a gesture of appreciation or gratitude to guests from the bride and groom during a wedding ceremony or a wedding reception.'
However i am not bothering either with individual presents as we have 80 to the wedding and im paying for a 3 course sit down meal, drink, cake and a party so dont need a present too. I am however scattering some red chocoloates on the table so a kinda favour. I went to 4 weddings last year and only 1 did favours and we left them on the table anyway so pointless waste of money in my opinion?! xx
Finally marrying the love of my life !!

Oh I like the idea of scattering sweets/chocolates on the table! I saw those love heart thingies too, which I liked the look of, especially if you can personalise them, so that may be the way forward! Ohhh I had visions of all sorts haha! Big elaborate gifts at each place setting, thought I might have to remortgage the house! These people should just be happy I'm feeding them and giving them an excuse to get drunk lol!

You could get away with sticking a bowl of sweets on each table, no need to go to the expense of getting something for everyone. That said, we're having love hearts in a cream box, with a pink ribbon band across the top and a mother of pearl button stuck in the middle. just cos I like to surprise people lol!! xx
CommentAuthorVelcro
Oh also a good idea! I'm feeling less crabby about it all now hahaha, that'e me, making mountains out of molehills as usual
....wonder if I could combine the bowl of favours as the table centrepeice as well haha.

I was of the same mind set - refused to pay for favours that will be left behind! Im having a sweet cart, with the candy striped bags in navy blue and white to match my colour scheme. Ive also got stickers for each bag that say 'Natalie and David Tied The Knot' with a thank you and the wedding date. Will post a pic later on xx

I like these ideas, wasn't sure myself what to do, although i was thinking of making little cow cushions with names on as my place names... it can be as simple as you like :)

I am doing a separate sweetie bar thing for the evening do, but depending on your theme I can't see any reason why a fishbowl vase in the centre full of sweeties can't work, I'd like that! I love the sweetie trees though, they look amazing!!

A bit of history for you, a bit long but interesting:
The giving of wedding favours has developed over many centuries to the modern wedding favours we know of today. The first wedding favours were known as ‘bonbonniere’ and were given as glamorous gifts to the wedding guests of French Aristocrats.
The meaning behind a ‘bonbonniere’ is that it’s a symbol of good look embodied by a little trinket box generally made of a porcelain or crystal and beautifully adorned with precious stones. As if that wasn’t enough the wedding guests could look forward to the sweet treats contained inside! In those days these treats were luxury items such as sugar cubes which would illustrate your wealth and were symbolic of royalty.
At this time sugar was such an expensive item that was only available to the rich, and it took a number of centuries before it was affordable enough for everyone. Once this was the case the tradition of giving wedding favours to your guests reached the population and was adopted by couple’s getting married all over Europe.
At this point the Bonbonnieres were substituted for Almonds which are historically known to be symbols of good wishes for the couples new life. Almonds coated with sugar, also known as Confetti, were introduced and these soon became the Sugared Almonds that we know today. Today, many centuries later Sugared Almonds are still a popular traditional wedding favour, and are given in sets of five to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness. The taste of which is said to represent the bitter-sweet experience of married life – let’s hope more sweet!
This brings us to the modern day, where gifts to wedding guests are known as wedding favours and are given as part of wedding celebrations all over the world. If you attend a wedding it’s unlikely that you will leave empty handed, as most Brides and Grooms now choose to give wedding favours as a thank you to their guests for sharing their special day.

Haha cheers, if you search there's a whole thread on candy sweet trees, where I posted how I made them and added pics as we went along!
CommentAuthorLeighS
Donda is right, that is what they represent and they were given out to guests to wish them all five. Now adays they are just little tokens like chocolate. If you get a small bag or box (favour bags / boxes) place a chocolate or a couple of chocolates in them. Usually they are one Bag/ box per guest and usually you put them on the tables before the wedding breakfast. Im using mine as part of my table decor. They are only as expensive as you make them. You don't have to have them though. xxx
CommentAuthormym72
We didn't have favours for out guests. We invited them to celebrate with us (the decision was theirs'), paid for all their food and also drinks - so why favours as well.!!!!
I've been to lots of weddings where favours weren't given out, and the ones that did usually got left on tables anyway so I saw it as just another unnecessary expense.

We're giving lottery tickets to everyone over 16 and colouring books to everyone under 16 (which really, is under 5 because there aren't many) we'll have the winning numbers announced on the night too.

As I said we are giving the candles but does our sweet buffet count as a favor even though its not on their desk or is this classes as part of the food?

CommentAuthorsuzky123
we wanted to do that but our venue was going to charge us £4 corkage for that. I was fuming as they dont have to do anything but I lost the battle.

CommentAuthorsuzky123
im serious. I had a right go at the phone. The response "the best we can do is let them have them but they must not drink them until they are in their rooms. Of course we have no control if they sneak off to the loo" Oh yes as if I am going to give my guests a favour and tell them to smuggle them into the loo. We had a nice fight but unfortunately we clashed. My revenge... I am smuggling a bottle of champers up there that I paid £80, normal shop price is £120 so god knows what they would have charged and I am smuggling that up and glasses so hmmmmpf! And I am also now not eating there the night before.

I just can't understand how places can be so unprofessional, particularly with wedding business, which everybody knows is worth an absolute packet to them :(
CommentAuthorsuzky123
if the venue was not so pretty then we would have gone somewhere else but we had given them 1.5k deposit we would lose and the only other equivalent was peckforton which was dearer and he was a money grabbing git, or soughton hall but didnt like the wedding planner. I am glad tho we couldnt have the alcohol as these candles are amazing and they smell lovelly. Actually went back to where we brought them sun and they no longer do them smelling like mine or wrapped in tulle so I was lucky I brought the favors when I did. The original plan was the minature and a choc wrapped in tulle but hubby to be thinks the candles now fit in better with our venue. Only downside is that I doubt the boys will appreciate them so at least we have the sweet buffet too.

there is another thread on here about favours (for more ideas) but I went to a wedding which had numbers on the back of the name place cards and they did a draw for 2 or 3 nice gifts to give away instead of having individual cheap ones - it got everyone involved - was lovely.

Least you can find the positives! Ah the boys will be fine - even if they got their miniatures they'd be gone in one mouthful and if there are sweeties then they'll be more than happy with that too! ;)
CommentAuthorKarenB9
I cant believe the cheek of some places !!! you would of thought that as your spending so much with them that they would let you have the favour and what difference is it if they are in their rooms or not there still in the building !!! I would sneek in a meal as well as the champs !!!
CommentAuthorsuzky123
nope they had to sneak to the loo haha! A raffle for a bigger prize is a good idea and can be turned into a little game. I like your way of thinking

I like the lottery tickets idea! Am struggling with 'unisex' favours, was thinking about home-made soap or candles...
But of course, they won't appeal to the male guests!
Tbh I'm sure the only person who worries about favours is the bride and possibly the older generation, so am tempted to save myself the hassle and expense and not bother.....
That said, I do think they can just add that final touch to the table...
Oops I think I have managed to talk myself out of, then back in to having them!
