    hi everyone,
just asking if anyone thinks it is wrong for the husband to take wifes surname? i have heard of a few people doing it but is very uncomman i think! To be honest i dont really get along with my h2b family but we are both very close to mine! He also has quite a strange surname (bottom!!!!) which i personally am fine with but as our 2 kiddies are currently in my surname he doesnt fancy them having that name as he was laughed at when younger!
H2b said he would happily take my family surname but will people think i made him?? and will he be laughed at?? should we just stick to tradition??

i think its your choice and think its personally acceptable to take which ever name, your friends and family would understand and the new people you meet wouldnt even know, so i say if you want to you do it.:)..in my opinion anyway.xx

i know this sounds silly but i just know his family are gonna come out with....'oh i bet she made him do that!'... but he has brothers so his family name will be carried on whereas we have no boys in ours!! xx

To heck with them- if its what you two want to do, then why not? Also there's the kids to consider- it'll be simpler for him to change his name than for the rest of you to change.

My h2b is taking my name- or rather we're taking each others' names. When I spoke to the Registry Office, the process for name changing is exactly the same for men and women.

Sod 'em. Do whatever makes you both happy! We thought about him taking my name but it would be too close to my dad's name (same middle name), so we're double-barrelling (which his parents object to but we're just not going to tell them).

My H2b is taking my name. My girls are from my first marriage, registered Campbell, but are known as MacDonald (my maiden name). Our son was registered and is known as MacDonald, and I use my maiden name. Its a lot easier for him to change than the 4 of us (plus my ex would never consent to them taking h2bs name, even though hes more of a Dad to them than the bio is!) The only person that will be bothered is his step mum, but she moans at everything so I aint too worried!

    Friends since 1999, together since 2007 :D
Mum to Twin girls and my little boy
Step mum to an amazing big boy

I agree you do what ever makes you 2 happy ...i broched the ides of double barrelling but mr lala doent like the idea as it would mean i still had my ex husbands name ( i thought about it so that i still had a name connection with my children but as he pointed out the girls will lose that when they get married ....if they take fiances name lol )

I have a friend who took his wife's surname when they got married. Dan doesn't like his surname (was bullied at school) ad would have taken my name if I had any emotional connection to it, but as I don't, I have taken his surname for the time being, but when/if we have kids we will probably both change to his step father's surname.

Sod what anyone else thinks, its yours and h2b's decision. I am very torn with mine, as ive been married before and have a son from that he is only 9 but his dad has told him no matter what he is not allowed to change his name, but as i said to him he can change it to whatever he wants when he is old enough that is his decision !! but my daughter has my h2b's name so i am so tied dont want my son to fell left out but i dont want to be my name anymore as i hate being referred to as my ex's wife !!!!!

i def think its going to be easier just to change his name than all 3 of ours! plus im not too keen on the double barrel names (fussy arent i lol) im just worried that he would get laughed at but if h2b said he wants to go for it then i spose we will :)

    its your choice.

It invovles more than if you were to change your name.
All the woman usually has to do is show a copy of your wedding certificate.

As everybody else has said it is your life you are building so do what will make you two happy. I will be taking h2b's name but we have no prior marriages or children to think about. As well as that we get on with his family more than mine and I have a brother to keep my family name. I already think of myself as a gan not a gardner

A lot easier that way, but don't forget you will still need to update the kids birth certificates when you marry! xx

Im all for personal choice. Especially if hes got an awful last name. I met a man once whose last name was Loser! Can you imagine being Mrs Loser?? Being an official legal Loser?

I cant wait to be a Clarke so I can get rid of Willis! If I hear the phrase 'whatchu talkin bout Willis?' one more time...GRRRR! lol

I personally know of a guy who did that, and he did it to avoid his debts! Not the best reason in the world :S Saying that, if you have legitimate reasons as to why you would prefer that I can't see why you shouldn't x
