    hello girlies :D

so, decided to start this after chatting about cakes on another post.... was hoping for your thoughts and advice. we have been offered by h2b's aunties to make the wedding cake...as long as it's traditional fruitcake! now, i'm not the biggest fan of fruitcake and would prefer something different. do you think it would be ok to ask for maybe just one cake and then either get different layers made or make them myself and then just get them all iced to look the same? don't want to offend but don't want entire three tiers of fruitcake that won't get eaten!

You should have what you want not whats traditional! my mums friend is making ours and she said we can have whatever we want! so we might have fruit at the bottom and then sponge for the next two layers. I dont think im personally going to be eating any cake which is why im not really fussed! x

hi madhen i hate fruitcake but seen as its tradition i will be having one. seen as ur h2b's auntie has offered to make the cake tell her its a very kind gesture and dont mind her doin it so long as she knows that you will be wantin other cakes made aswell then you could maybes work on the cakes together and ice them how you want them to be. x

yeah thanks guys, that makes sense :) don't think they'll be offended if we do it like that, cuz they're really lovely! but def don't want all fruitcake - the amount of weddings have been to where the cake is the traditional fruitcake and there's lumps of it wrapped in tin foil moving from relative to relative for a few months afterwards...!

hey cally, no way?! small world! we haven't a clue where we're getting married yet! we're hopeless! keep looking at venues online and trying to get a list of places to visit. problem is we can't really decide whether to get married in scotland where we live now (and where we'd love to get married cuz so many gorgeous places) or whether somewhere in ireland would be better as most of both our families are there....

We are only having a 2 tier cake. The bottom is fruitcake and the top strawberry jam sponge cake with vanilla cream.

Definitely don't let yourself feel pressured into only having fruitcake, I can't stand the stuff and am always really disappointed at weddings when I just have to nibble a bit of icing off the side of someone elses! It sounds like a lovely idea to have them make a layer of fruitcake then have another layer of something else too!

I hate fruit cake too, we are havng a cupcake tower made by my stepfather and then we are going to buy an iced sponge cake for the top tier and decorate it ourselves. I agree with the other ladies and im sure your H2B's aunties wont mind x

yeah i'd like to have one made by them cuz is so nice of them to offer :) cupcake towers are pretty cool though, never been at a wedding where they had one but saw in friend's photos and looked gorgeous. handy not to have to cut it too!

I hate fruit cake with a passion! I am making my wedding cake myself so it will be sponge - 3 tiers, not sure on flavours yet but know how I want it decorated and because I know that some of the older family members might appreciate a fruit cake more, I have decided to make a seperate one and put it next to our wedding cake but it will only be small.

I am sure she will understand, just explain that you really appreciate the offer and you would love her to make you cake but would like something other than just fruit cake and if you brought/made some seperate sponge cakes would she mind decorating them to tie in with the fruit cake decorations. : )

@madhen, I'm going to bake and ice them monday evening or 1st thing tuesday morning, then decorate them tuesday evening cause H2B will be with his best man and my children will be with my sister so I have a nice quiet house to myself so I can finish the cake and anything else with my bridesmaid/maid of honour. Then going to the venue 1st thing weds morning and set up and decorating. : ) x

Fruit is food of the devil. I CANT STAND IT! So their will be no such stuff at the wedding, if the guests dont like it then its tough. There is only one exception.. my Uncle in law is a diabetic and i have swore i will made him his own cake.. 6" fruit that he can have to himself :) Gotta keep him sweet afterall.
Maybe ask her to do a smaller fruit that you can serve separate for those who prefer it?
