if there is detail on the cake I don't think this is pricey, you have to think of the time needed to create the decoration. have you got a pic so I can have a neb?? (still haven't decided on mine)

well why dont you devide the cost buy how many people...works out at £1.90 per person...if you were to go to a shop and buy a slice of cake... im sure you would probably pay about this price if not abit more in some coffee shops! lol if it is a shop they do tend to charge alot to cover there overheads but £285 sounds reasonable to me. i make cakes myself and people are always shocked at how much they cost, i hardly get a proffit from my cakes at all once all the ingredients are paid for the cost of the electric used to power the oven, all the decorations, the cost ofd the icing, all the tools needed, the board and the box all of which are quite expensive and keep going up in price. fruit cake is more expensive than sponge cake as the fruit is more expensive and fruit cake has alcohol in it aswel which adds to the cost. then you have got to think about the time its took the person to make the cake...me and my nan are making my cake... we both used to do it profesionaly in our bakery and we have spent 10 full days already making the cake and decorations to go on it and still not finished it! takes alot of time and effort and if your paying someone in a shop they want at least what £8 an hour? if your not happy with the price i would shoop arround, maybe find someone that does it from home, alot of people advertise of book of face, i got a leaflet from a wedding fayre on cake prices and was gobsmaked the cheapest cake on the whole list was a one tear, plain, sponge cake..........£500! daylight robbery! i would be surprised if there still in business tbh lol x
