Hi everyone, just wanted to know you're thoughts on how much you think is too much to pay for a cake? I've been in contact with an amazing cake maker and they've emailed me a design and a price of £645 for a three tier cake that would feed 100 people. Now the cake is full of detail and so beautiful definitely an eye catcher but my OH says its too much, its only £50 more expensive than other places I've had quotes from. Would you pay that bit extra to get that bit extra?

    TIA xxx

I would pay that bit extra, yeah. I got a quote from a cake maker who I was in LOVE with their cakes. My bridesmaid is also a cake maker but I didn't want her to have to f*ck around with it when she should be enjoying the wedding. They quoted me £600 for a 2 tier suitcase cake with a globe on top and flowers, decorations, etc. quite elaborate, to feed 80. Thankfully my bridesmaid just said no don't do that, and is doing the same cake at cost for £150. £50 in the grand scheme of things isn't much more, and if you're happy to pay it then the price is okay :) xx

Like Myranny says, if you are happy paying that price that do it. Personally I wouldn't be paying £645 for cake, something that will be gone and not kept but that's just me. We have paid £365 for our 3 tier, bespoke design, multi-flavour cake to feed 70-80 and wouldn't pay more than £400 on cake. It's personal choice/situations ultimately though x

i dunno why anyone would want tyre cakes, but it's a typical example of paying cheap for a cake vs' a quality cake maker. You aren't just paying for the ingredients, you are paying for someones artistic talents as well as being able to bake a good cake.

I agree. You're not just paying for whats inside the cake but also the craft and labor of the maker. Personally I am paying for a 4 tier topsy turvy cake which feeds around 100ppl within the first 3 tiers and we keep the top tier. Ours is costing £365. Out topper isn't going to be whats shown but an ivory top hat instead.

My cake comes in at £425 for 4 tiers however I won £100 off my cake so I feel like i am getting a bargain. £50 extra at your prices isn't even 10% so if you love it go for it and find somewhere else to cut back on xx

If you love it go for it.

Our 4 tier was £400 plus delivery charge which was either £40 or £50 (can't quite remember that detail now.

Our cake is coming in at the £600 mark but Iknew it would be a little pricey because of the company but i know I can trust them fully and we ended up going for a 4 tier. The style isn't over to top but it's a lot of work and I think if you can afford it and it's what you want then go for it :) I have seen people skimp and then their cake was mouldywhen cut into and someone else cake fell apart on the day so I personally wouldn't skimp on it unless it wasn't an important to you :) follow your gut feeling x

I personally wouldn't pay that much on a cake.. I find it ridiculous that a bit of sponge and icing could be worth that much money! I appreciate the labour that goes into it but it still seems an awful lot of money that I personally feel would be better off being spent in another way/towards something else.

We are paying for £210 for a three tier cake that serves 100+ people and that's including the delivery and set up fee of £10. When I first started looking I was looking at very detailed three tier cakes that were around the £400 mark but after a couple of months I completely changed my mindset and thought is it really worth it?

All personal choice and preference though. Go with what you want and what you love so you don't have any regrets x

im not a big fan of icing on cakes (i find too sickly) and this one is decorated with praline and chocolate which i think puts the price up a bit more plus its made by that famous cake company on tv ch0ccyw0ccyd00dah which i suppose adds a little more xx

If you love it then go for it but I wouldn't pay that much for a cake personally, no matter how elaborate! We are having a three tier buttercream finished cake and the baker is local to our venue so only charging £140. Should feed about 70-80 people xx

It really depends on what you can afford and how important it is to you to have something impressive. I didn't want to spend hundreds on something that was going to be eaten, so we got friends to make a layer each and the plan was to get it professionally decorated. The decorator let us down in the end so we ended up with plain icing and ribbons in the colour of our scheme. It worked for us and went down well. If you want to spend the money on something really beautiful and you have that money to spend, it's not too much.

Yes, it seems to be very expensive. But it may due to the decoration and cake toppers.

The more detail that goes into the cake the more you will have to pay. We are having a ruffle 3 tier cake that will feed 100+ people with sugar roses on the top and sides. We are paying £430 but if we had gone for one of her much more detailed cakes then it would have been around £500-£600. Her cakes are amazing but we had to be realistic and the fact that I won't be eating much of it I didn't want to spend more than 400 really on a cake.

If your happy with the supplier and can afford it go for it. We are paying £600+ for our 4 tier cake but I can relax knowing the company is amazing and will do an amazing job and knew they would be quite pricey be a use all their cakes are. But we have budgeted for it :) and your cake is beautiful btw :) x

Wow I personally think that's a lot of money for a cake although if looks beautiful. I priced 3 tier cakes which were £350-£400, thankfully I fell in love with a naked cake which is costing £250 for 4 tiers. It's by a professional cake maker who specialises in wedding cakes

If you can afford it go for it. I wouldn't spend that much on a cake personally but that cod we didn't idnt have the budget. What you gave to think is, is the venu going to desplay it all day for people to see? Are people actually going to see it before you cut it. Also can you justify spending that much money on something that is going to be cut up at the end of the day? We were very lucky and my mil made us a beautiful cake. So we didn't have budget for a cake :). Just do what you can afford I think. X

I agree with some of the other comments here, I personnally wouldnt spend that amount of money on just a cake. Yes they are beautiful but still it seems alot. Were paying £220 from someone we found of book of face and he samples were yummy. 3 tiers feeds around 120 bottom tier vanilla top 2 tiers chocolate. x
