Had meeting with the vicar to arrange our church wedding for a Friday. We were pleased the date was free and he was happy to do it. We were NOT pleased with the price list he handed to us. Total = £700!!! FOR A CHURCH!?!?!? Am I being incredibly naive or what but I thought you just made a donation?! Seriously, the CoE is making some money here somewhere and I can't believe it...we just cannot afford that. They even have a £40 charge for allowing a photographer to take pics in the grounds!!!!!!!!
So....the search begins for a new church...9months to go....! BTW I really want to marry in a church..i dunno why but I had my heart set on it! :( Anyone like to share their church prices!? Cant believe I might have to haggle with a church lol xx
CommentAuthorPennylane
I'm glad you posted this cos I'd like to know how much to budget. I am getting married in a catholic chapel and I though we just had to slip the priest £100 quid but I fear I may be wrong lol x

*spits coffee all over the monitor* HOW MUCH?? Jeez - we thought we were getting a bargain for £300, then we discovered it was only going to be £190. What a rip off!! (Ours is a Methodist church btw)
You can find a church for much less than that!
CommentAuthorMrs fairytale
our church is costing us £555 for everything inculding bells, choir, organist, banns, clergy, service, heating, certificate, run through a week before and we just have to sing a permission slip for our photographers to be able to take photos in the church xx
cant wait to renew my vows, love my hubby sssssooooo much xx
CommentAuthoryoungjen84
Yeah I think I might have to change churches! I honestly thought the church wanted more people to get married within the church and to go and everything, but this has really disappointed me :(
£650 approximate for me, with bells. Don't know Gods thoughts on bartering! Lol!
CommentAuthoryoungjen84
yeah the £700 includes all the extras like choir, bell ringers, organist, heating, flowers, etc etc but i'm still shocked!

Im afraid babe the AVERAGE price going by the ladies on here is about 600 pound for a church wedding :-( Im sur you can find one cheaper but it really depends where you are and what you want ie bells flowers choir etc.

bear in mind ladies in november the prices will change! our vicar told us the govening church body people are changing it so all churches have to charge the same. and also bear in mind u can only get married in a church if its your parish or u have a strong connection to it via regular attendence (weekly for 6 months) or immediate family married or baptised there so not just any church is possible x
CommentAuthorclewsy
hya ive gone for a very nice registry office as from the outside it looks like a church lol. It is expensive and the vat goes up in the new year so check the details for that when you get the price for church etc if your only putting down a deposit.xx
CommentAuthorRachie :D
Its about right but if we were to have a civil ceremony in a venue (not the reg office) it would be at least £900

wow that is baaaaaaaaaaaad we were thinking of two churches one is huge and very historic and cost £600 for non-members the other was small and we chose it as we're only having 18 of us there at the ceremony so the church we're having is £200

Ours is CofE and costs £500 without any extras if we had the bells, the choir, allowance for video recording and flower lady it'd cost £850 what a rip off catholic churches just ask for a donation to the church! xxx
CommentAuthorMrs (Dove) Pidgeon
Ours was CofE and for everything, including organ, bell, flowers, verger etc was roughly £300. That didn't include banns though- we had to pay £34 each to our local parishes.

Ours is £600 ish but that includes everything, my finace and daughter were christened there as well as lots of toher family members so it really isn't an option to get married anywhere but this particular church so to me although a lot more than i realised it would be its worth every penny! Our daughters christening only costs us a £25 donations amazing the huge difference in price and am pretty sure it will take the same amount of time to get married as it was to christen her!! on the plus side my friends church cost over £800!!!! xx
CommentAuthorclareabella

OMG I too nearly spat my drink all over the computer!!! We are getting married in our local methodist church and it is coasting £200 inc the orgainist, family members are doing the flowers and my step grandfather is also doing the service although we need the minister there as it is not my step grandfathers parish. I am discusted with how much some of you are saying it is! I thought getting married at a venue was expensive at £400!! How can they charge those prices!!
Outraged!!!!
CommentAuthorMrs Steer

My venue hire room for the service and registrars fees come to about 600 so its not much less for a civil service (and I have to pay extra for the musicians, flowers etc) I agree its a lot and its not something you give a big chunk of budget to when working out how much for what :((
CommentAuthorluvlifejen (mrs berr
i still think its wrong for the church to CHARGE you i think it should be a donation (which i thought it was) but my god! the prices are sooo expensive! xx

Im getting in married in Ireland and i just have to make a donation as its the parish that i grew up in but if we wanted to marry ina different church it would cost €300 and we had to find our own priest. I taught this would be the same anywhere. x x x x

Ours is £1000 I find it disgusting but I love the church and it has meaning to us x

It's worth bearing in mind that there is a minimum charge of around £320 for a church.
This is set by the Church of England nationally and covers the legal expenses of your marriage
Any extras, like flowers, church, organ etc are on top of this.
You should also consider that a lot of church buildings are very old and expensive to maintain and that the church also has to pay vicars and so on a full time wage off limited income sources. If we want resources like the church to be around whenever we want them, but we don't want to go every week and contribute to a collection, I think it is fair that we pay a bit extra when we do actually use the services, to cover the cost of having them constantly available.
CommentAuthorljeh92
Our first choice was £450 for the church No photos allowed! Extra £50 if we want it recording £150 for wedding bells £100 if we want a choir
Now were trying to look for another, otherwise its a civil service at our hotel where we're having our reception.

CommentAuthorChrissy~MrsFaulds2b
We're having our wedding in the hotel. It's costing £200 for the use of the room but it comes decorated etc and the registrar is £350 as we're getting married on a Saturday. Think the wedding notices are standard at £33.50 each xx
CommentAuthorhello tomorrow
oh no am in a panic now ave booked the church but thought it would be around 200 i better ask be4 i sart making me invites
CommentAuthorChrissy~MrsFaulds2b
Did they not run through any prices with you before you booked? Don't panic hun, not all places charge the same. It may well be that yours will cost around the £200 mark. Don't go cancelling anything, just get the prices and take it from there xx xx
CommentAuthorXLittleMissMe!X
Also you can't just pick and choose your church. You have to either live in the parish or have a family connection to the church. If you have your heart set on it then you have to pay whatever the going rate is but I think it is unfair how they force you to pay out that much and the rates vary from one to the other.
CommentAuthorRags
I was thinking Methodist until I realised they can't legally marry you, then I was thinking CofE as you don't need the registra to come along. Now I'm in a panic again. I really wanted to become a member of the church I choose and have been to both churches for 2 sunday services. 1 church is walking distance from home, the other is just outside of a nice walk (uphill) and also next door to where H2b wants the reception. Oh no decisions decisions. I may need to talk prices with the CofE that I had got my heart set on before I make my decisions now.
I'm now a married woman
I have a gorgeous husband
Whats to do now
Theres no more wedding planning to do

CommentAuthorlulu83x
our church is a Cof E and its £380
£260 for church service £50 organist £20 bells £3.50 certificate £22 banns £25 verger
I asked my vicar about the varying costs around the country and he was shocked stating that he was under the impression that all church fees were a set fee? regardless of where etc?? strange dont u think? some of you seem to have very high costs for your church! :-/ xx
CommentAuthorOuttahere
My church is £410 with all legal fees, banns reading, certificate, someone to decorate and clean the church, heating, bells, organist and choir. Or £360 without the choir. The choir isn't available on our day so in total it's £360 for us x Your church is ripping you off! I got the impression from the vicar that is marrying us, that all churches charge the same - obviously not!
CommentAuthorLaticschick Holland
Think everywhere is different hun, it also depends on what type of church. Ours is Church of England, we don't have to pay for register to come out with that. We have to pay 520 for everything
CommentAuthorhaylsmccrone
we are waiting to find out prices for our church, my manager said when they looked at where they wanted was £300, plus £100 if you wanted the seats -well what else are guests meant to use...bring theyre deck chairs, £200 for heating and £100 for bells, i thought would be around £300 max. will have to see what our local church says
CommentAuthorAldridge2B
my chucrch is costing 550 that includes everything even banns the only thing it doesnt is the choior which we are not that fussed on anyway. it also includes a videographer x x
CommentAuthorGem
£200 for heating, are you joking??and as for seats. I am so shocked a little bit disturbed by how much some of you are paying. How can they charch these sorts of prices! also regarding methodist churchs not being able to marry you legally Ive not heard ths before. We are marrying in a methodist church and I have family memebers doing the service as they are minister for the methodist church and as far as I am aware they can do it legally but feel I now must check! am generally so shocked about the variations is prices and how much for some!!!nervous about our costs now!
CommentAuthorMrs (Dove) Pidgeon
Some other denominations churches do need a registrar- it can be best to check. But not all.

Wow cant believe how much some of you are paying for churches. I always thought you just had to give a donation. Makes my registry office sound cheap at £180.
CommentAuthorSophieSweets
our wedding at Gretna Green blacksmiths is costing uost just under £1500, so £700 isnt that bad lol x
CommentAuthorEmsy5000
our is not CofE and it is costs £425
the thing about churches is that you have to remember they have significant overheads maintance of the building which are often listed. paying the ministers/vicars, heating, lighting. then the little that is left over goes into the good works they do in the community not into their own pockets.

CommentAuthorEmsy5000
also think of the size of the room heating is exspensive when it a huge space! if you want a church marrage you should be prepared to give them a decent amount of money for the true costs of using their site. thats why they no longer ask for just a donation because people just take the mick

Just read the original post - 700 isn't bad at all you know we were quoted 900 ! so now we're having a registrar come out to the farm we're getting married at - only £350 apporx for her to come out and marry us :D woo
