I'm wondering how much we should budget for my dress/outfit? I will need a specially made dress rather than off the peg as I'm very short but don't want to spend the earth. I've seen some good dresses locally costing upwards of £1,000, is that reasonable?

I paid £199 for my dress. It was on sale and originally £700. I'm short too and knew any dress I bought would need altering, in at least length. Luckily, my sister is doing this free of charge for me as well as taking it in. I'll need it dry cleaning before partly due to it being on a sale rail but also because it will be in a box for several hours when we travel to Vegas. This will cost $85 so all in all it's costing me about £250. You can get some bargains if you shop around and unless you want to, don't *need* to pay that much x

The one I love is £700 but I went in a local shop today where not one dress is under £1000. I personally think its extravagant but if you have the funds and the wish to spend that on a dress then its your choice xxxx

Good for you! My OH thinks I should spend most of our budget on my outfit but unless I really struggle to find something I don't see the point, especially as I'll only be wearing it for one day!

Most shops will shorted the dress for you and do the side seams for around £100 so it is possible to buy an off the peg dress. Some designers allow you to order the dress is either a longer or shorter size anyway. The best thing to do is speak to your local shops and get some advice from them. You may be able to get one in the sale and have it altered depending on the design. You can pay anything you want for a dress so it is up to you if you feel it is reasonable for the price and if you think it is worth spending that much.
I'm quite short and my bridal shop are hacking the bottom of my off-the-peg, £250 dress, off for me :)
It doesn't need to cost the earth if you don't want it to :)

I chose a dress that I can have the train cut off and made into a shawl then have the whole thing dyed so it can become an occasion dress afterwards. Plus I get to wear mine twice - once in Vegas and then a month later in London! I personally couldn;t justify spendind a fortune on something I'm not going to wear that much. But that's just me (I rarely pay over £30 for a pair of shoes that I'll wear to death)!

have you thought about going through Ann - if u have seen a designer dress u want, she maybe able to make a similar copy of it - and she makes them to measure too i think, the one i wanted was around £1400, but seen it on Anns site for £175, and there are loads of good reviews and actual pics of real brides on book of face xx

Have not even thought about the dress and someone told me to budget £1000 for one, thought it was a bit extreme, glad other people agree.
CommentAuthorXLittleMissMe!X
Beskiboo you can spend as much or as little as you want. Even if you fall in love with a designer dress you can always have one made up in cheaper fabrics etc to cut down on costs or there are some great sales on in the shops in Jan and July time on the designer dresses so plenty of sale rails to grab a bargain too. Yes if you are paying full price for a bridal shop dress then you can easily spend between £850 and £1000.

I love a dress that costs £1140 - i haven't bought mine yet and it may not end up being the one when i go try it on but my appointment is in march and i am being optimistic. Gonna try on half the shop cuz the lady says they have new stuff coming in and not all stuff costs that much so just go and try onlots of dresses as you may find the dream dress for under a grand xxx

I can recommend an AMAZING wedding dress lady who designs and makes them from home. None of her gowns have cost over £1000 and she will stick to your budget, be that £250 or £1000. She is just so so lovely and amazing at what she does. If you want her website just let me know Liz3yy xx

Originally my h2b auntie was going to make mine and it cost £107 for the material, picked it all out myself, but then i saw my dream dress in a bridal store in darlington called Grace Bridal who sell preloved dresses, an Ian Stuart dress for £600, just lucky it was for a taller bride and it is just the right length, so had to go with that. But having it made is a great option if you are on a budget and it doesn't have to cost £1000! Good luck. :)

hi, mine was £800 but my dad is paying for that for me so it has not come out of our budget which is good as i would never have been able to afford it, hes just been putting away £120 every month and it will nearly be paid off :-) xx

That's a point, should I have a veil?!
Can't wait until the day I become Mrs. Johnson :)
CommentAuthorXLittleMissMe!X
Find your dress first and then decide once you have it on. Some dresses look better without them. Also depending on what the detail is like on the dress will determine what length you have too as if the back of the dress has loads of detail on it you don't want to hide it with a cathedral length veil just as if it has lots of detail you don't want to hide it.

Using an iPod touch with this site isn't easy! Lol
My friend got married last year and a dress hand made from scratch in silk, cost her about £1,000. she did look amazing but I hate the thought of spending that much.
It's interesting to hear what others have done, hopefully with some shopping around I can find something lovely for less than the price of a small car! Lol

The material I bought initially was duchess silk and had lace and still only came to £107, there are so many different materials you could buy but not spend the earth on. I am not having a veil, I would just get annoyed with it, so I am having a really big flower clip in the side of my updo, and a veil would have made my dress too fussy, it already has a lot of detail in it. Good luck! :)

Tiaras are always nice, or you can also have some really lovely vintage hair slides that i wish i could describe but can't lol. The one i saw would have followed my hair line round my ear, i will try and find a pic and put link on your wall, just to see if it something that you might like. It is really exciting shopping for your dress, just make sure you try on every style and wear some good undies, i wore awful unsupportive ones when i went and it didn't do the dress any justice, lol. The 2nd time it looked loads better! :)
