I was really pleased to have found a great photographer, she's a sweet girl who does a fantastic job and is recommended by several friends. She does a package for £1200 which includes an engagement shoot with a chosen picture enlarged and mounted for your guests to sign on your wedding day, she's there from the morning when you're getting ready until the first dance. She will take 300-400 pics on the day which you will have a disc of plus 90 to choose from for your album. You get a letter giving permission to reproduce all photo she's taken as many times as you want.
I thought this was a good enough deal but then I have never used a photographer before. My Mum thinks this is really expensive and is suggesting that I use either my Uncle or my Cousin who are professional photographers. The problem I have with using them is that I don't want them to be working on my wedding day and if for some reason I wasn't happy I couldn't tell them because I'd hate to hurt their feelings.
Is £1200 really expensive?
Sorry for the long post. x

I don't think £1200 is really exspenisve. If you can afford it and it's the style you want then go for it. afteral there is no point in spending loads on your wedding and not having photos you love to remember the day :)

There's always discussions like this on forums and I think the only answer is "it depends" Prices for photographers really vary. I've had quotes as cheap as £450 and as expensive as over £2,000 but I have pretty much the same as your package but he's also staying after the first dance and setting up a "fancy dress photo studio" and I'm only paying £900. Some people say the price reflects there experience and quality but I don't think that's always the case. Some photographers just have "sensible" prices to get the business! But you also have to take in to consideration travel costs etc If your happy with her, happy with the package and can afford that then I'd just go with it. xx

Im paying £1500 for a v similar package but coverage into the night as well. In my opinion although there are some photographers who charge a lot for rubbish photos I do think you get what you pay for. We looked at loads of photographers and our one by far and away had the best photos. But i also think the most important thing is having a photographer that you really get on with as well - they will be there all day! If you like them and can afford them then go for it!
There are so many people out there who will tell you
what you can't do.
What you have to do is turn around and say, "watch me"!!

I would shop around, coz im sure you could find someone who does what you want for a fraction of the price BUT..... then again if they have been recommended by so many people its better to go with them than go with someone whose cheaper and not well known and totally ruins your photographs.
If i could afford it i would have gone for a bigger package. But with my dad with all the latest camera's and his passion is photography i guess im kinda lucky. Were paying £300 for the photographer to be with me all day from getting dress make up hair etc. to first dance. All our pix will be on a disc and any extra shots will be extra. But my dad can do all that. For us i think this package is ideal. Good luck!!

If you've got family available who'll be there anyway it could be worth getting them involved - why don't you ask to see your cousin and uncle's previous work if they are proper photographers? If they're good then you could ask them both to take pics which is really good especially at the reception of your guests etc - then you can pick and choose the photos you like (more choice) and theycan probably give you a better deal on albums etc. I'd definitely explore the option anyway before you let down the lady you've got in line - I've got a friend who's coming with his partner, we're getting all day photos with 2 cameras and editing etc for 300, and the prints and albums he's sent me a website he uses for good quality (he also does studio work) so will give them to us at cost! Means we'll have a really flexible 'package' which should cost less than 700 in total even if we got additional albums etc for parents and sent out a load of prints in the thank you cards.
1200 is a lot considering you don't get an album out of her - that's my opinion anyway. Amd looking at album prices it can be a couple of hundred pounds to get an album once you consider the photo printing and then the cost of the album itself - my thoughts anyway

Ahh just noticed you don't get an album.. in that case, that's a heck of a lot. I get an album with mine and a smaller version for my parents x

There is an album included, sorry forgot that bit and 75 Thank You cards with your favourite photo. Thanks for all your input ladies, I'm going to meet with her and see if she does a cheaper version. H2b suggested putting disposable cameras on the tables and let our guests take care of the photography. Great idea and I will do that but I wouldn't rely on any of our guests, we'd have an album full of bums and god knows what else.
It's so lovely having you girls for neutral advice. x

My friend offers a similar package for just under £1k. We're having 2 hours for £175 as we're only having a small wedding.

If you can afford it go for it :)!! I would as that sounds like my ideal package xx
CommentAuthorShirleygirly
The only reason I can afford it is because we don't need cars or wedding rings and it is something that is really important to me. Thanks again ladies. xx

I think that the photo's are the bit you treasure - your children only get to know of the day from them, you enjoy getting them out and pointing out who's grown up, who's grown old etc. It's worth spending on it. And if you get let down I know of at least 2 other photographer friends in Hereford, lol :0)

My photographer is doing ours for £799 but we dont get an album with that if we want one thats an extra £300 for the smallest she does give you a cd with the photo's to print yourself so i think 1200 is a really good price we get 12 hours of coverage and have had quotes up to 3000 and dont think they're style is half as good as our photographer she has just put her prices up to 999 for what we are having so im lucky to have booked when i did but she started as a baby photographer and did family shoots and didn't start doing weddings till last year but her style is exactly what i wanted so it really does lie on what you want one person said they'd do our wedding for £150 so you can find all sorts of quotes! xx

I think that's pretty great for album and copyright of 300-400 pics. At first I was going to get a friedn who is starting their own photography co to do it, however felt that it would be unfair for them to work on our wedding day, and also loose the professional relationship of being able to be to the point, as you have to be so nice about everythign ocs you're not necessarily a normal paying customer.
I also realised that the photos will last forever, as I have a hopeless memory! They are worth having the irght ones, so many of my friends say that if there is one thing they could change it would be a different photographer.
Don;t think you been overcharged, sounds like a good deal.
