I suspect we will get a few no-shows and some people won't eat.
I've initially catered for 90 people for the evening buffet (there will also be a wedding cake of cheese with crackers, pickles and chutneys) at £10 per head.
We know a lot of the older generation coming (which maybe make up 25 - 30 percent of guests) love a buffet...
Do I need to up the catering numbers? Or will this be enough? I don't want to run out of food, but equally, I don't want it all to end up in the bin...

if the cheese and crackers is aswell as a buffet for 90 then i reckon that should be enough. maybe add in some bowls of eanuts/crisps /breadsticks to bulk it but i agree most of the time there is so much left over if it all goes then thats great after all your not actually feeding these people its more of a gesture. thats going to be one expensive cake though!!! think i would have gone with making u platters reckon you would get alot more for your money as if you have a "cake" for 130 people that £1300!!!! thats alot of cheese!!
One BIG day will lead to lots of little happy days !!

I think to cater to 90 is probably about right as the "young ones" probably won't eat much and will just pick at it and will be drinking xxx
We are catering for 70 and having 100 at our evening do, iv been told by may people and the hotel not to up the amount of Todd due to waste and people are more likely to pick at a buffet! And for£15.50 a head for the extra people we just couldnt afford it, people understand how expensive it is!

A lot of the venues I went to told us we have to cater for 100% of the guests, even if there is a no show we still had to pay for the original number, but think at a buffet some people will eat less than one persons portion, so if you can get just under its perfect, so I think 75% would be fine :) we are catering for 100 at the evening even tho more might show up xxx

One of the venues we saw said to cater for about 80% of the total guests for the evening.. Our actual venue only want money for the additional evening guests which is 20, so not sure how many they actually cater for as total number will be around 90.. xxx

We're catering for 80, and are having 100 guests.
Given you have a reasonable proportion who you think are likely to eat, I'd consider upping it to 100 to be on the safe side; most venues say to cater for 75-80% of your total number of evening guests, so if you cater for 100 that equates to 77% which I'd say is about right.

Thanks for your replies.
I think you're right Barbie, I'd be best upping to 100..
Also, h2b pointed out that a lot of his friends will be quite happy to take any extras home at the end of the night! Xx

Laura: I'm terrible when it comes to left-overs lol. When we have parties we often over-cater as I like eating any left-overs the following day (there's just something about party food when you're hungover that's SO GOOD! lol).
I think you'd be doing the right thing upping it; always best IMPO to have too much rather than not enough!
