    So ladies....
70 day guests and upto 100 for the evening. How many tiers should I have? 3 of 4? And do we have to have a fruit cake one? Me and h2b don't like fruitcake, but will guests want fruitcake? Also we are thinking of having carrot cake for top tier it's h2b favourite cake- but what other flavours could we have?

We're having four tiers, all in different flavours: top tier will be fruit; next one down will be lemon; next one down chocolate; and the bottom one vanilla sponge with raspberry and buttercream. That way there's something for everyone. The one's we're looking at serve 100-130 depending on the size of the tiers (10, 8, 6, 4; or 12, 10, 8, 6), and we're having approx 90 guests to the evening reception (which is when we're cutting the cake).

We don't like fruit cake, but my mum does, as does OH's mum and a few other guests, which is why we went for the smallest tier in fruit :-)

Ive got 50 day guests and 80 evening day guests...and we're just having a 2 tier...(included with hotel package) but I think its probably traditional fruit cake- I'd rather it be sponge but my parents are whinging about that so have decided to have cupcakes around the edge, rather than adding another tier xxx

We have about the same amount of guests as you and have gone for 4 tiers.
Neither of us like fruit cake either so we have 2 tiers vanilla sponge and 2 tiers chocolate (the top and bottom the same and the 2 middle the same so it serves equally) xx

I'm having a four tier cake. Bottom tier will be lemon, then vanilla sponge, 3rd tier choc sponge and top tier will be choc sponge with choc orange . Your baker can tell you how many each tier will feed. I'm saving my top tier to take home and share with friends. YUM YUM. XXXX

We're having 100 guests and could've got away with 3 tiers but wanted to keep the top tier (fruit) for our first child's Baptism when the time comes. So we're having 4 tiers (bottom lemon, next up chocolate and next up vanilla). H2B's fault, he kept adding things to the cake including the extra tier, he's like a kid in a sweet shop!

3 tiers will be fine hun, not everyone will eat the cake.

    Uh oh! Now I'm worrying!

I do want to make sure I have a huge piece left over of each of the 3 tiers we're actually cutting so we can freeze and eat when we're back from honeymoon and also, my BIL is a massive cake fan (and generally a foodie) so he'll want some too (my sister won't say no lol).

im getting my wtb a castle cake for £1500 and i have to go to the cake supplier for a tasting session for £15 with regards to a fruit cake its traditional to have the top tier as a fruit cake as this keeps for the christening of a child all you do is take the icing off and replace it

so my advice is go to the suplier of the cake and have a tasting sesion and you can decide what cakes you like and they can also advise you on how many tiers you need

TBH Linzi-jo, I think a lot of people don't eat cake at weddings, I always see trays of it left untouched, I'm just hoping our guests are different like at my sisters wedding where people couldn't wait to get their hands on a cupcake, some even had two (and they were large), the next day, the family were all fighting over the last cupcakes to cake home lol so there wasn't really excess in the end.

Reginald - wow, £30k for the entire wedding? H2B and I are spending just under that (current spreadsheet says so) however, that includes our honeymoon.

I'm cheating and have four tiers but the bottom one is a dummy layer. They are large cakes anyway and will be plenty for our 150 guests but from previous experiences not everyone takes a piece! We have instructed the top layer to be put aside for us to take home (its sponge with butterscotch butter cream in the middle yum!), the second is fruit, the third is normal sponge and the bottom a fake! Ours is going to be similar to the Peggy Porschen floral cascade cake, so I think it needs more than 3 layers. Thankfully our amazing next door neighbour started her own celebration cake business and is doing it for us free as our wedding pressie, she is incredible!

We're hoping to use ours as the pudding instead of paying extra for another course! I need to speak to the venue about it though as we are having cheesecake and I need to make sure they'll have space in their fridge! I think ours is a 4 tier. we'll have some left over though i think but the next size down is too small.. xx

its not necessarily about the tiers, its also about the size of each tier btw!!
We've got 55 for the day, and about 120-150 for the night, and also got to take into consideration not everyone eats cake especially after sit down meal, buffet, candy table etc.

    We're having a 1.5 height 6", normal 8" and normal 10"... that serves on average 120 people.

Oh wow, I was wondering how on earth we'd find something as I don't like cake much, but now there are TONS of ideas! All of your cakes sound amazing!!

I found my cake years ago, but sadly the cake shop disappeared and the artists with it :( It was a proper fairytale, 4 tiers of woodland scenes propped up by trees, waterfalls... My ideal! Probably for the best as not sure H2B would be up for that haha! Not to mention the pricetag... Hmmm, now to think again...

I was going to make my own to be honest as make the odd cake but don't think my stress levels and need for perfection could cope 2 days before the wedding!! I'm sure you will have a field day with your sister, espec if she's real good with sugarcraft!! flavours...endless! depends if you want traditional or not. see the look of ours will be traditional but then when you cut it, thats where tradition stops!!

haha indeed, i always lick the bowl, then when the cakes are cooked, if its a full cake and have to cut the top off to level it out, i eat the crumbs and crispy bits... if they are cupcakes, i use an ice cream scoop to put the mixture in the cases so that gets a cleaning afterwards too :D
