Before the wedding before starting to look at dresses/going for fittings? How far in advance?

For perspective were looking at Oct 14 for the wedding and I don't want to seem over eager!

I've been engaged for 2 years and am getting married in April 2014, i'll be starting to look in the next couple of months so i'd say around a year before. However, there are some brides on here who have seen their dream dress at an amazing price in the sale and have bought it then and there, it's totally up to you :-) x

    October 2014 sorry! Special moment!

It's more I'm dreading it (I'm not a fan of clothes shopping in the first place!) and I don't know if I should start looking sooner/later!

i ordered mine october 12. wedding april 14.

my dress has kinda set the colour scheme and theme of the wedding, so im really pleased i ordered it. i was keen to start trying them on sooner rather than later and it has dictated the above. going for a mocha colour scheme as i have ordered a sash belt to go with my dress, my dress is lace going for a vintage lace theme

I got engaged January 2012, booked wedding april 2012 for august 2013 but waited until i had a year left to try dresses and finally brought it oct 2012 and arrives may 2013 so 3 months before the wedding. I know its really exciting as soon as your engaged but i wanted to book/buy the venue, ceremony, theme/feeling of the day and bridesmaids dresses before i picked mine as wanted to make sure my dress fitted the kind of day i was having. It is a very traditional wedding so meant i wanted a really traditional dress and classic. Im glad i waited as dont have as long to wait now and i think you can do it too early and then dont look forward to it as done! I also think your body shape can change and your ideas of a dress may change including fashion if too early but a year is perfect xxx

I went looking for wedding dresses a few weeks after we got engaged with the intention of just browsing and not buying, but I fell in love with my dress so put a deposit down there and then. That was 18 months to go so probably a bit early but it took 6 months to be made, and I haven't once doubted myself

We've been engaged around a year now, and we've got a bit of a budget. My main sort of gripe as well is I'm in the process of trying to lose weight, and I'm a little worried I'll see the dress I want on a good deal, and then not be able to squish into it... or maybe I do lose the weight and it's too big!

Also trying to figure out who take with me as well - I'm not sure if my mam would want to come with me and my 3 bridesmaids would be difficult to try and get together for opinions.
I'd take my fiancé, but that kind of defeats the point of him not seeing the dress before the day...

Most dresses can be altered up or down a couple of sizes, and the bridal shops are used to brides who are in the process of losing weight, so should be able to advise you...

If you're feeling a bit shy about going into the shop, maybe visit some bridal fairs where there will usually be stands from bridal stores which gives you a chance to talk to the ladies who work in the shop in a lower pressure environment...I was really nervous about going but this really helped for me.

As to who to take with you - I'd say someone who can be trusted to give an honest opinion without being overbearing and influencing your decision. There are several brides on here who's h2b has seen or helped pick there dress, no its not traditional but if your not fussed about him seeing your dress, there isn't any reason why he shouldn't come along.

    Xx

Yay booked my first appointment at a dress shop to see what kind of dresses I like and think suite me more :) still haven't got a date but its def 2014 at the h2b now but he's at work and will be dropping me home later on and said it will have to be when we can sit down and discus a day, had plenty of time to do that last night but he already told his mates he would be online on Xbox which I don't mind but he could try multi task lol. I shall just have to keep bugging him in to helping figure out a date but hopefully me dress shopping and going to a wedding fair the next day will help him get a wiggle on xx

i bought mine dec 2011 for an oct 14 wedding BUT mine was a designer one and i found it at half price and it was my dream dress which would have been out of my budget otherwise. its a size smaller than i was but with a corset back so easy to alter and also so far 1 stone down and it almost fits perfectly.

they take between 6-9 months to order in so start looking at least 12 months before I'd say is best. you can start looking anytime really.
I ordered my dress in september for may this year... but i put it off because i really didnt want to go so! I left it quite rushed to be fair as didnt start looking until August! x

Speaking from experience, the earlier the better. I'm getting married in 6 months and I've only just booked an appointment to get measured...! Thankfully the dress I want only takes 3 months to arrive so I lucked out, but don't put yourself through the same stress I did! x
