Ususally it's banns in Church but Methodist Church works differently - you have to obtain your marriage licence from the registrar like you would have to for a civil ceremony.
I know your licence is good for 1 year and you need it for at leat 8 weeks prior to the big day, what I'm wondering is when is the best time to go to the registrar?
I was thinking between August & January but thought it might be a bit early ?? I don't want to leave it too close though, I was talking to a lady the other day and their registrar was being a monkey with it, they left it until 12 weeks before the ceremony and then the registrar told them they didn't have to grant them a licence at all :S
    What do you ladies think?

"The course of true love never runs smoothly"
But if it had been easy then we wouldn't love each other as
much as we do right now - 1 week to go :D

I would suggest you speak to the local registry office. Because we are having the ceremony in a licensed venue we had to book the registrar first and they told us the latest date by when we had to give notice when they wrote to confirm the ceremony details.

my registrar said to register 6months before hand to give plenty of notice and it also gives you 6 months either side of your wedding date to move the date if you need to! x

It might be different depending on your area but we were told that you have to have your licence no less than 8 weeks before the actual ceremony :S
Originally we were going to have a civil ceremony (supposed to get married last year - don't ask lol) and the lovely lady at the registry office said it was a legal requirement, if it was any less than 8 weeks then we couldn't get married. Our Reverend said the same thing last year when we booked the Church. I'd check that one out if I were you shellay xxx

so let me get this straight...you call the registrar book a time/date etc...then apply for a licence a bit later on eg. 6 months before...?

It depends on the area- some only open their books 12 months in advance to bookings and you give notice then!

The earliest my Registrar will allow us to give Notice is 3months before the wedding - it's the last thing I have to do and I need to wait until the 23rd April to do it, it's driving me mad I want to get it dones so it's all out the way and I know that I have done it xx

So it's different in different areas then - why oh why can't it be simple?? :P

@ pinkalice - you only obtain the licence from the registrar's office for a Methodist wedding, the ceremony itself is performed in Church by the Reverend but depending on your area you have to have your licence for so long (8 weeks here) before the Reverend is allowed to legally marry you.
Same for civil ceremonies (here anyway) you go to the registrar's office to obtain your licence, again you need it at least 8 weeks before then your ceremony is performed by an officiant of the registry office

I'm just going to ring the registrar tomorrow I think lol
